FMGs Foreign Medical Graduates continue protest seeking permanent registration
Even as the protest by Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) seeking to expedite the issuance of Permanent Registrations (PRs) entered the third day here Wednesday (July 2), Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav discussed the issue with A.P. Medical Council (APMC) members and called for a quick resolution. In a meeting with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences(Dr. NTRUHS) vice-chancellor P. Chandrasekhar, APMC chairman D. Sreehari Rao, registrar I. Ramesh, Director of Medical Education (DME) D.S.V.L. Narasimham at the university in Vijayawada on Wednesday, the Minister asked the APMC chairman and registrar to inform the National Medical Commission (NMC-New Delhi) about the issue and find a way to resolve it. According to a press release from the department, the Minister also directed the duo to get clarity on the duration of the internship to be allotted for graduates who studied a part of their course online during the pandemic. The APMC informed the Minister that graduates who sent an application before 2021 have been granted PRs. Meanwhile, the graduates, who have been staging protests for the past two days, were denied permission to continue the protest at the university on Wednesday. Following this, many went to Dharna Chowk in the city. Madhavi (name changed), one of the protesters, said: 'We did not do sloganeering. We did not create any law and order issue, but we were whisked away by the police on Tuesday night. On the one hand, people celebrated National Doctors' Day, and on the other, we were humiliated in every possible way.' Madhavi, who passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam and appeared for counselling in May 2023, was allotted a two-year internship. 'While some other people from my batch were allotted a one-year internship, I was asked to undergo a two-year internship. No explanation was given by the APMC back then,' said Madhavi, who was in India for a duration of 10 months during the pandemic. She has a compensation certificate from her university. The graduates, who have been staging protests now and then since July 2024, are wondering how many more days they would have to wait. 'Our batchmates in other States are laughing at our situation. It has been three-four years since we completed our medical courses, equivalent to MBBS, in other countries. Many of us are waiting to pursue postgraduation, which is another 3-year course. When will we get PRs and when will we write NEET-PG? We are in our late 20s now,' said another graduate.

APMC brings renewal services to district level
Tirupati: In a significant move to decentralise medical registration services, the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) launched district-level doctor registration renewals and re-registration services at SV Medical College (SVMC) in Tirupati on Saturday. With this, doctors no longer need to travel to Vijayawada for services other than permanent registration, offering relief to hundreds of medical professionals in the region. The two-day registration drive was inaugurated by district Collector Dr S Venkateswar in the presence of APMC Chairman Dr Daggumati Sreehari Rao. Speaking to the media, Dr Venkateswar described the initiative as a welcome development and urged senior doctors, practicing physicians, and medical students to take full advantage of the services now available locally. He commended the APMC for introducing long-pending reforms that have brought greater ease and flexibility in availing council services. 'The decentralisation of the registration process is a major step forward. I request APMC to continue introducing innovative measures to make the process even more accessible,' he said. Dr Sreehari Rao highlighted that the APMC plans to offer these services at district level every weekend, starting with this initiative in Tirupati. The move aims to reduce travel burdens on senior citizens and practicing doctors seeking re-registration, renewals, or No Objection Certificates (NOCs). A key change introduced includes a reduction in service fees. Doctors under 75 years of age will now pay Rs 8,000 for registration-related services, while those above 75 will pay Rs 6,000, significantly lower than the previous Rs 40,000–Rs 50,000 range. Changes have also been made to Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit requirements. Doctors aged 65–70 now need only 15 credit points over five years, while those between 71–80 need 10. Those above 80 years are exempt. Dr Sreehari Rao announced that meritorious final-year MBBS students from all government and private colleges will be awarded gold medals annually. APMC is also working on WhatsApp-based services for renewals and introducing AI tools to monitor CME attendance. On this occasion, doctors appealed to the Collector for a permanent APMC office in Tirupati to facilitate registrations with more flexibility. The Collector assured that a decision would be taken after discussions with APMC. MLC Dr Cipai Subramanyam also spoke on the occasion, which was attended by SVMC Principal Dr G Ravi Prabhu, SVIMS Director Dr RV Kumar, Superintendents of Ruia and Maternity hospitals Dr J Radha and Dr Prameela, DM&HO Dr V Balakrishna Naik and others.

APMC onion-potato market redevelopment proposal to be finalised ‘within a week'
NAVI MUMBAI: The much-delayed redevelopment plan of the onion-potato market at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) complex in Vashi will be finalised within a week, officials said, even as the latest effort by authorities to vacate it failed in the face of opposition from traders. Navi Mumbai, India - June 25, 2025:Redevelopment proposals being finalized as thousands risk lives daily at `extremely dangerousÕ Kanda Batata APMC market buildings in Navi Mumbai, India, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. (Photo by Bachchan Kumar/ HT PHOTO) (HT PHOTO) Several buildings in the market, constructed in 1979-80, have been declared extremely dangerous by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). Earlier this week, the civic body disconnected the water supply to the onion-potato market to force traders to vacate it. The supply was restored on Tuesday after traders gave the civic body an undertaking saying they would accept responsibility for any incident, and claimed precautionary measures have been undertaken. 'Since last year, we have, along with the APMC, taken up repair work,' said Sanjay Pingle, president of the traders' organisation. 'Onion and potato are essential items and, hence, the market cannot be shut. We have given an undertaking to the civic body on the issue. The traders are ready for redevelopment, which should be taken up at the earliest.' However, Manohar Totlani, another trader, said there seems to be no will to take up redevelopment as the proposals have been repeatedly changed. 'We should be given adequate space and not have to spend for it, which is what redevelopment is all about,' he said. Redevelopment of the wholesale market, spread over 175 acres, has been stalled for years due to disagreements over floor space index (FSI) and costs. The redevelopment plan has also been mired in controversy over the source of funds and traders' demand for additional space, leading to a court battle. With thousands of people working or coming for business to the wholesale market risking their lives on a daily basis, especially with the monsoon in full swing, APMC secretary PL Khandagale said a permanent solution is on the anvil. 'We have been working on a redevelopment proposal, but it needed some technical changes to make it feasible. The plan has been revised accordingly, and our project management consultant should submit it in a couple of days,' he said. Khandagale added that the new redevelopment proposal takes care of all aspects to ensure traders' support, and the factual position will be presented in the court. 'We are confident of concrete developments in a week to take up the process at the earliest.' Along with the onion-potato market, the redevelopment proposal of the central facility building (CFB) in the spices market has also been approved, he said. 'We have designated buildings where the traders can be shifted in case of any incident. We are also finalising additional areas to meet any eventuality,' he added. The onion-potato market was the first to shift to Navi Mumbai in 1981, following a government decision to decongest Mumbai by shifting the wholesale markets. Poor construction led to NMMC in 2003 designating it a C1 (dangerous) category building to be vacated immediately. The CFB building and the MAFCO vegetable market were later declared C1. Other buildings, including the administrative building, are also in poor condition. Over the years, portions of the building's ceiling and plaster have fallen. In December last year, the APMC administration installed iron pillars adjacent to the dilapidated pillars to support the galas and buildings in the onion-potato market, along with undertaking repair work. The traders have removed several dilapidated roofs and constructed sheds.
