Trade and farmers' unions in Dakshina Kannada to join the nationwide general strike on July 9
Various trade unions and farmers' organisations in Dakshina Kannada will join the nationwide general strike called for by the Joint Committee of Trade Unions and Samyukta Kissan Morcha, pressing for their various demands, on July 9. A procession will be taken out from Dr. B R Ambedkar (Jyothi) Circle to Clock Tower, where a protest meeting will be held, said office bearers of the trade unions. The office-bearers told reporters here on Thursday that the Central Government has codified 29 labour legislations into four Codes, thereby denying workers their right to protest or hold strikes. Labour legislation would not be applicable to over 70% of the workforce in the country with this codification that also denies the right to form associations and hold protests. The Codes also permit enhancing the work hours from 8 to 12 per day and overtime from 50 hours to 125 hours per month. Instead of paying a ₹9,000 pension to workers, the Code left the ESI and Provident Fund payment choice to the employers. Various trade Unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, AICCTU, SEWA, LPF, and others, have called for a general strike. Their key demands include the abrogation of the four labour codes, retaining work timings of eight hours per day, job regularisation to ensure job security, and the right to form associations, all of which were under threat following the labour laws that favour corporate bodies, they said. The unions have also demanded a minimum wage of ₹26,000 across the country and ₹36,000 in Karnataka in the unorganised sector, along with the abrogation of hired or contract labour. Expressing their solidarity with the farmers who have sought pension for senior citizens among them, the trade Unions demanded that agricultural workers be paid a ₹9,000 pension a month. The nationwide strike was also an effort to get the New Pension Scheme annulled and urge the government to revert to the Old Pension Scheme. They have urged the State government to withdraw the proposed amendment to the Factories Act that increases the daily working hours to 12. The office bearers also urged the government to withdraw amendments to various agriculture-related laws, including the APMC Act. Leaders Sunil Kumar Bajal (CITU), K Seetharama Berinja (AITUC), K. Phanindra (Bank Employees Union), Yadav Shetty (AIKS) and Oswald Prakash Fernandes (Raita Sangha) spoke

Joint Committee of Trade Unions in Mysuru extends support to all-India general strike on July 9
The Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU) in Mysuru has expressed their support for the all-India general strike called by various trade union organisations on July 9. Addressing media persons here on Thursday, office-bearers of the trade union organisations said that the government has adopted 'anti-worker' policies under the guise of 'ease of doing business'. The government was accused of diluting trade union laws and the protection to the working class by the introduction of four labour codes, which, the organisations said, was inimical to their collective interest. Hence, a general strike has been called by INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, AICCTU, SEWA,LPF, and other organisations in support of their demands. Their key demands include abrogation of the four labour codes, retaining work timings to 8 hours per day, job regularisation to ensure job security, right to constitute associations, etc., — all of which are under threat due to the labour laws leaning towards corporate bodies, they said. The trade unions have also sought a minimum wage of ₹26,000 in the unorganised sector across the country, along with abrogation of the practice of hired or contract labour. The trade unions also criticised the governments for outsourcing workers. Expressing their solidarity with the farmers who have sought pension for senior citizens among them, the trade unions said that agricultural workers should be given a monthly pension of ₹9,000. The nation-wide strike is also an effort to get the New Pension Scheme annulled, and urge the government to revert to the Old Pension Scheme. The State government was also urged to withdraw the proposed amendment to the Factories Act, as per which, the daily working hours will increase to 12. The office bearers of the trade union organisations also urged the government to withdraw amendments to various agriculture related laws, including the APMC Act, and termed those inimical to the interest of the farmers.

Shimla dist. expects record 1.63 crore apple boxes this season
Shimla, June 16 (UNI) Shimla district is heading towards a bumper apple harvest this season, with an estimated production of 1.63 crore apple boxes. Last year, the district had produced 1.62 crore 56 thousand boxes, yielding 3,25,137 metric tonnes of apples. Given the favourable weather conditions and improved orchard health, the yield is likely to surpass last year's figures. To ensure a smooth and organized apple season, Deputy Commissioner Shimla Anupam Kashyap chaired a high-level meeting at Bachat Bhawan auditorium on Monday. Detailed discussions were held with officials from horticulture, agriculture, transport, PWD, police, and APMC to ensure that arrangements are in place for transportation, road maintenance, parking, packaging materials, and inter-departmental coordination. The deputy commissioner directed the Public Works Department and National Highways Authority to complete road repair and maintenance work on a priority basis. He emphasized that uninterrupted power supply must be ensured by the Electricity Board, especially in high-yield orchard areas. To facilitate better management, five control rooms will be operational from July 15 at Fagu (main center), Balg, Shoghi, Gumma, and Kuddu. These centres will be equipped with telecommunication facilities, CCTV cameras, and staffed by SDM-appointed personnel. Adequate police deployment will also be ensured to manage traffic and safety. Strict instructions have been issued to prevent overloading of vehicles, with violators facing legal action. Apple-laden trucks will not be permitted to enter Shimla city and will be rerouted through the Dhalli-Mehli bypass. Additionally, trailers will not be allowed on the Theog-Shimla route between 5 am and 9:30 pm, while empty pickups will use the Bekhalti road. The deputy commissioner also directed all sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) to fix freight rates based on road condition, fuel prices, and box load. These rates must be publicly displayed at control rooms and mandis. Any instances of overcharging will be dealt with strictly. To protect growers from fraud, licenses to commission agents will be issued only after proper verification by APMC and the Agriculture Department. Identity cards will also be mandatory for drivers and cleaners, with registration fees set at ₹200 for pickups, ₹500 for six-wheelers, and ₹1000 for trailers. Meanwhile, fruit mandis will be regularly inspected by SDMs, horticulture officers, and APMC officials to ensure cleanliness, drinking water supply, and toilets. However, Harish Chauhan, convenor of the Himachal Pradesh Apple Growers' Association, criticised the government for issuing a notification restricting apple sales at the orchard level, despite the APMC Act recognising the entire state as one unified market. 'This move will increase transportation costs and commissions for the buyer. The government should focus on registering genuine buyers and commission agents. If someone defaults, the state must take responsibility,' Chauhan said. 'There's no harm if growers receive their payment directly before their produce even leaves the orchard,' Chauhan said. With increased yield expectations and coordinated administrative efforts, Shimla is poised for a productive apple season this year. UNI ML PRS

Maharashtra Govt to modify livestock panel's order for halt on animal markets: Opposition
Even as Opposition MLAs claimed the Maharashtra government on Monday has withdrawn a May 27 circular sent to all Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) not to hold any livestock market from June 3 to 8 ahead of Eid al-Adha, commonly known as Bakri Eid, the Maharashtra Goseva Ayog, which issued the directive, denied it has been withdrawn. 'One of the first agendas of our meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was this circular. We were told at the beginning by the animal husbandry secretary that the government has withdrawn the circular,' said Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Sheikh, after attending a meeting with the CM along with several other MLAs on the preparedness for upcoming Bakri Eid festival. Congress MLA Amin Patel, who was present at the meeting, said the demand has been accepted. 'It was conveyed that a new modified order will be issued,' said Patel. The Indian Express on June 1 reported that in a May 27 circular sent to all APMCs, the Maharashtra Goseva Ayog said in light of the upcoming Bakri Eid festival, when large-scale animal slaughter/ sacrifice is carried out, no livestock markets should be held in villages across districts from June 3-8 to ensure that no illegal slaughter of bovines takes place. 'Please stay vigilant in this matter,' it said, referencing the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, which enforces a complete ban on the slaughter of bovine animals (cow progeny) in the state. Despite the Opposition's claim, Maharashtra Goseva Ayog chairman Shekhar Mundada, however, denied withdrawing the circular. 'We have not withdrawn the circular. But we work only around preventing cow slaughter. We have nothing to do about other animals,' said Mundada. A highly placed source in the state government said the ban was never on goat meat and the circular is being modified. 'The state has strictly imposed a ban on cow slaughter which continues. But as far as goat or other animals are concerned, there was never a ban on it,' said a senior government official. N Ramaswami, secretary, animal husbandry department, could not be contacted for comment despite several attempts. Maharashtra has 305 principal and 603 secondary APMCs, and these are regulated by the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board under the APMC Act. There are 292 livestock markets functioning in Maharashtra, and almost all are regulated by the APMCs.
