Assembly session: Ten casinos owe Rs 352 crore to Goa government
Last Updated: Panaji, July 22 (PTI) Ten onshore and offshore casinos in Goa collectively owed Rs 352.44 crore to the state government in dues, the legislative assembly was told on Tuesday. A written reply tabled during the assembly session by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant revealed that in some cases, dues have remained unpaid since 2018. The reply was accompanied by a document listing valid casino licensees and identifying those who have defaulted on Annual Recurring Fees (ARF) and COVID-19-related dues. Out of 18 onshore casinos with valid licences, nine have pending dues. Additionally, six others have either had their licences revoked or are currently non-operational. Among the defaulters are three non-operational onshore casinos that collectively owe more than Rs 264.81 crore. They are: La Calypso Hotels Pvt Ltd, whose licence was revoked in June 2023, has arrears amounting to over Rs 102.11 crore. Trade Wings Hotels Ltd, which operated out of Bogmallo Beach Resort, owes Rs 82.7 crore in ARF dues accumulated between February 2018 and March 2022. MKM Grand Gaming, currently under suspension, has not paid Rs 80 crore in dues since 2018. 'In the case of La Calypso, a letter has been issued to the collector (North Goa) to initiate proceedings for recovery of dues as arrears of land revenue," he said. The data shows that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed significantly to the accumulation of dues. The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that only 75 per cent of the principal amount needed to be paid for the months affected by the pandemic. Only one offshore casino, Golden Globe Hotels Pvt Ltd, has pending dues of Rs 8.25 crore. All other offshore operators are currently up-to-date with their payments, as per the data. Bangladesh Reaffirms Zero Tolerance For Terrorism, To Cooperate With Malaysia
DHAKA, July 17 (Bernama-BSS) -- Bangladeshi Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Wednesday reiterated Bangladesh's unwavering stance against terrorism and violent extremism, saying Dhaka is prepared to cooperate closely with the Malaysian authorities following the recent arrests of Bangladeshi nationals there. According to the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Adviser Hossain noted that Bangladesh has already extended its willingness to support the ongoing investigation in Malaysia, where a number of Bangladeshi citizens have been arrested in connection with alleged involvement in radical groups. 'We want to cooperate fully. I understand they will cooperate with us. I have assured them of cooperation from our side,' said the adviser to reporters at the Foreign Service Academy. bootstrap slideshow He mentioned that two more individuals were arrested recently on similar charges and there may be more developments. 'We have been given an indication that more arrests will be made,' he said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) earlier confirmed that the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has formally requested details about the arrested individuals, including their identities and the nature of the allegations. Bangladesh has consistently maintained a strong policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, militancy and violent extremism, and reiterated its commitment to upholding this principle in bilateral cooperation with friendly nations. 'If anyone is involved, they must face the legal consequences under Malaysian law,' Adviser Hossain said, adding that punishment could be from two to seven years of imprisonment if proven guilty. 'If they are acquitted, it will be fine,' he added. The matter was also discussed during Adviser Hossain's recent visit to Kuala Lumpur, where he met with Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan on the sidelines of the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting.

New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, during his recent Malaysia visit, emphasised the need for early completion of the review of ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) and underlined development partnerships in digital, maritime, health and innovation, as per a statement from the MEA. Minister Pabitra Margherita led the delegation at the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AIFMM), 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting (EAS FMM) and 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum on July 10-11, 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In his remarks at the AIFMM on July 10, MoS Margherita extended India's continued support to Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN and reiterated India's support for ASEAN unity and centrality. Further, MoS Margherita appreciated progress in the implementation of the 10 Point proposal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced at the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Lao PDR in 2024 to further strengthen the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and shared the initiatives taken this year under the India -ASEAN Year of Tourism. 'He emphasised the need for early completion of the review of ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) and underlined development partnerships in digital, maritime, health and innovation,' Ministry of External Affairs said in the statement Monday. At the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) held on July 11, MoS Margherita participated in a constructive exchange of views on pressing international and regional developments, and deliberated on the future trajectory of the ARF process. He underscored India's deep concerns over the persistent threat posed by Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism, particularly in the wake of the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam in the Indian UT of Jammu and Kashmir. The Minister reaffirmed India's resolute commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
