Pakistan in polio grip: Lab tests find virus in 20 districts, 13 cases officially reported in 2025

At least 13 samples collected between May 8 and June 17, tested positive for Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV1). The samples were collected from key cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad read more Pakistan is staring at a health crisis after authorities found the poliovirus in 20 districts in samples collected from sewage. The findings have raised an alarm in the country with 13 confirmed cases so far this year. A report by ARY News that quoted data from the National Reference Laboratory, at least 13 samples collected between May 8 and June 17, tested positive for Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV1). The samples were collected from key cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, as well as in districts across Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Meanwhile, Sindh reported the highest number of contaminated samples, with 14 testing positive across 10 districts. Lahore confirmed three cases, while Islamabad and four districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also reported positive samples. In Balochistan, the virus was detected in Mastung, Khuzdar, and Sibi. Additionally, Mirpur in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) showed evidence of the virus. Vaccine hesitancy The rise in confirmed cases of polio is reported at a time when Pakistan is witnessing a decline in vaccine takers. Recently, the country conducted a nationwide polio vaccination drive, where at least 60,000 people refused to get the shot, with 39,000 of them in Karachi alone. These refusals are posing as a roadblock to the country's polio eradication efforts. 'We're not just fighting a virus; we're battling misinformation and mistrust,' a senior official told ARY. Health experts caution that polio spreads mainly through contaminated water or food and can lead to paralysis or even death. With no cure available, vaccination remains the only form of protection. The World Health Organisation stresses that multiple oral doses are essential to safeguard children under five, who are most at risk. With the virus reappearing in both urban and rural sewage systems, officials emphasise that the next phase of Pakistan's fight against polio must address both the spread of the virus and vaccine hesitancy with equal urgency.

In a shocking twist to the death of Humaira Asghar, it has now been reported that although her body was discovered in her Karachi apartment just this week, she actually passed away around nine months ago. According to Arab News, Humaira is believed to have died in October 2024. Due to the long gap, her body was found in an 'advanced stage of decomposition." This has been confirmed by Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed, who conducted the post-mortem examination. 'As per Call Detail Record (CDR) the last call was made in October 2024," Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza told the publication. In addition, the report states that Humaira was last seen by her neighbours in September or October 2024. Interestingly, the only other apartment on her floor was unoccupied at the time, which is why no one noticed any unusual smell coming from her flat. This detail helps explain how her death went unnoticed for so many months. Not just this, officials also revealed that electricity of Humaira's house was also disconnected in October 2024 due to non-payment of bills. 'Humaira's body is likely nine months old. She probably died between paying her last utility bills and when her electricity was disconnected in October 2024, probably due to non-payment of the bill," one of the officials said. Another official also revealed that the food in the actress' home had also been expired for months. 'The jars had rusted, and food had expired six months ago," the official said. #SHOWBIZ: Pakistani actress Humaira Asghar Ali's severely decomposed body found in Karachi apartment

KARACHI: The Pakistani entertainment industry is reeling from the shocking discovery of actress and model Humaira Asghar Ali's highly decomposed body in her Karachi apartment on Tuesday, revealing a tragic and isolated end to her life. Initial reports suggest she may have been deceased for as long as eight to ten months, with her mobile phone and social media accounts showing no activity since last October, according to Bollywood Life. The grim discovery was made when police, acting on an eviction order due to unpaid rent, forced entry into her apartment after receiving no response. What they found was a scene of extreme decomposition; Humaira's body was unrecognisable, her facial muscles melted, fingers and nails decayed, and internal organs blackened. In a disturbing detail, insects were found inside her body. Despite the advanced state of decay, her head and spine remained intact, with no signs of spinal cord damage or broken bones. Karachi Police Surgeon, Dr Summaiya Syed, who performed the autopsy, confirmed the severe decomposition, making it impossible to determine the exact cause of death. DNA and toxicology tests are currently underway to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding her demise. Investigations by Deputy Police Chief Syed Asad Raza revealed that Humaira's last phone activity was in October 2024, a timeline corroborated by neighbours who last saw her around September or October of last year. Police sources also indicated that electricity to her apartment was disconnected in October 2024 due to unpaid bills, and no alternative power source was found. The presence of expired food items further supported the theory that she had been deceased for many months. Humaira, 32, was known for her appearance in ARY's reality show Tamasha Ghar (the Pakistani version of Big Brother) and had a role in the 2015 film Jalaibee. She was a multifaceted artist, listing herself as an actress, model, theatre artist, painter, sculptor, and fitness enthusiast on her Instagram, where she boasted over 732,000 followers. Her last post was a series of candid photos. The actress had reportedly been living in the Karachi apartment for seven years but had not paid rent since 2024. This led her landlord to seek a court order, ultimately resulting in the police intervention that uncovered her body. Initially, there were reports that Humaira's father refused to claim her body, allegedly stating that the family had long severed ties with her. However, her brother, Naveed Asghar, has since travelled to Karachi to claim her remains following a DNA test to confirm her identity. Naveed explained that his younger sister had moved from Lahore to Karachi seven years ago and gradually became estranged from the family, only visiting every few months. He noted that she had not been home for a year and a half before her death.
