African Union forces foil attack on military bases in Somalia
MOGADISHU, July 26, July 26, (Xinhua)" African Union (AU) troops backed by Somali security forces on Friday thwarted an attack on military bases by a militant group in Sabiid-Anole town, located southwest of the capital Mogadishu. The AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) said al-Shabab fighters had launched a coordinated attack on military bases manned by AU troops and Somali National Armed Forces in the early hours of the day. "The joint forces successfully repelled the terrorists, forcing them to retreat swiftly," AUSSOM said in a statement. Eyewitnesses said the assault erupted with a series of explosions in the nearby villages before the two sides exchanged gunfire. During the engagement, several militants were killed while others escaped, severely injured, the AU mission said. "Various munitions were also seized from the fleeing militants," it said, noting that the allied forces maintain control of the targeted military bases, which were liberated from al-Shabab in June. AUSSOM said a major military operation is underway to locate and apprehend the remaining fighters and their allies. Meanwhile, the mission assured the safety and security of residents of Sabiid-Anole town and the surrounding areas. Sabiid-Anole town, in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia, is one of the strategic objectives that is now under the control of the allied troops. The incident came as the joint forces have intensified operations recently to weaken al-Shabab in the southern region and put the remaining towns under their control. The extremist group frequently targets military bases and government facilities in Mogadishu and elsewhere across Somalia as part of efforts to topple the internationally backed government.

Ethiopia arrests 82 suspected members of Daesh group
NAIROBI: More than 80 suspected members of Daesh have been arrested across Ethiopia, state media said, claiming they intended to carry out a 'terror mission.' The 82 individuals were trained in neighboring Somali Puntland region, according to state outlet Fana Media Corporation, which cited a statement from the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS). Ethiopia shares a long border with Somalia, which for months has been experiencing a resurgence of attacks by the militant Al-Shabab group. Fana said late Tuesday the suspected Daesh group members were 'identified and arrested,' but did not give any further details. The suspects 'had been recruited for a terror mission,' Fana said, noting the arrests took place in several regions across the country, including capital Addis Ababa. Somalia and Ethiopia have had tense relations for months after Addis Ababa announced an agreement with the breakaway Somaliland region last year, angering Mogadishu and raising fears of regional destabilization. Relations between Somalia and Ethiopia have since normalized. Ethiopia is part of the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) combating the Al-Shabab group in Somalia. The AUSSOM mission faces funding difficulties, even as fears of the groups resurgence are stoked by attacks in the Horn of Africa nation.

OPEN// Egypt reaffirms support for Somalia's stability
CAIRO, July 3 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty participated Thursday in a virtual session held by the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) at the ministerial level to follow up on developments in Somalia and discuss latest updates on transition from the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The foreign minister reaffirmed Egypt's firm and supportive stand regarding Somalia's security, stability, unity and territorial integrity. Abdelatty praised efforts made by the Somali government to restore security and stability and strengthen governance and State institutions across the country. The foreign minister also reaffirmed Egypt's solidarity with the Somali government and people and backing for efforts to enhance the capacity of national Somali institutions and the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali security forces. Meantime, Abdelatty voiced Egypt's concern over the ongoing security challenges posed by terrorist groups, particularly Al-Shabaab, stressing the importance of ensuring a smooth and coordinated transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM. All steps are essential for preserving the security gains achieved so far and preventing security gaps that could be exploited, he added. The foreign minister underlined the importance of providing regular and sustainable funding for the AUSSOM to enable it to fully carry out its mandate, warning that failure to secure adequate funding would undermine the mission's ability to perform its tasks and negatively affect the entire Horn of Africa and the international community, including disrupting global maritime trade routes and increasing terrorist threats. In conclusion, Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to supporting Somalia at both bilateral and multilateral levels through capacity-building programs, training personnel, supporting security and civil institutions and contributing to the provision of humanitarian assistance.
