Despair as Aaron-Wooi Yik fail to win China Open

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik let slip a golden opportunity to win their first World Tour Super 1000 title after losing to a scratch Indonesian pair at the China Open men's doubles final. The world No 2 pair's hopes of hitting a career high were dashed by the unranked giant-killers Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri, losing 15-21, 14-21 in just 34 minutes. The Indonesians played aggressively, giving Aaron-Wooi Yik little chance to come back after taking huge leads. Aaron-Wooi Yik took home US$70,000 (RM295,146) as runners-up while the champions won US$148,000 (RM624,000). This was Aaron-Wooi Yik's sixth appearance in the final of a World Tour Super 1000 tournament. Today's result marks a huge win for the Indonesian duo, capturing a Super 1000 title despite the China Open being just their second international tournament after being paired up. Aaron-Wooi Yik were gunning for a fourth title this year, having won the Thailand Open, Singapore Open and Badminton Asia Championships. The two-time Olympic bronze medalists can however take heart as this was their 13th World Tour final appearance in their badminton career, of which they have won four.

Aaron-Wooi Yik storm into China Open final after straight-sets win over Indian rivals
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — National men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are through to the finals of the 2025 China Open after beating Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in their semifinal match at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou yesterday. The Malaysians hardly broke a sweat as they swept the Indians aside 21-13, 21-17 in only 42 minutes, raking up their 11th win out of 14 meetings. Aaron-Wooi Yik will go up against Indonesians Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, who sprung a surprise on Chinese pair Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang by winning 21-19, 21-17 in their semifinal match. The Malaysian pair have collected three titles this season - the 2025 Asian Badminton Championship, the 2025 Thailand Open and the 2025 Singapore Open. — Bernama

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik take Malaysia derby at China Open, set up semi with Indian rivals
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — The national men's doubles pair, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 China Open Badminton Championships in Changzhou after defeating another Malaysian pair in the quarter-finals yesterday. The second seeds put on an energetic display to down Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun 21-16, 21-16 at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium, improving their head-to-head record to 4-3. Aaron-Wooi Yik are set to face the Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, who had earlier ousted Malaysia's Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 21-18, 21-14. Also making it to the last four are national women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who put on a consistent showing to defeat Japan's Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto 21-16, 21-12. They are set to face the host pair Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, against whom they have won only once in four previous encounters. — Bernama

Aaron-Wooi Yik sweep past French pair, M'sia assured of spot in semis

(AFP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : National men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik qualified for the quarter-finals of the China Open after an easy win over France's Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov. The world No 2 pair took just 35 minutes to beat the French brothers 21-17, 21-18. This is their second win over the French duo, who are ranked 18 rungs below them, in their two encounters so far. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who were eliminated in the first round of the Japan Open last week, were in fiery form today. Their win also assures Malaysia of a semi-final spot as Aaron-Wooi Yik will play against world No 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the quarter-finals. Wei Chong-Kai Wun took 56 minutes to defeat compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong 17-21, 21-17, 21-19 in another second round match. Three other Malaysian pairs have qualified for the tournament's quarter-finals, namely men's doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah. The China Open is a World Tour Super 1000 event which offers a total cash prize of US$2 million (RM8.4 million).

China Open: Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai crash out in first round
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — The hopes of national mixed doubles pair of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie of reaching the final of China Open Badminton Championship were dashed in the 2025 edition when they crashed out in the first round in Changzhou today. The world number six was shown the way out by Indonesian pair, Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu in 21-18, 22-24, 15-21 over an hour. This is Soon Huat-Shevon's second defeat to the same pair, apart from failing to retain their runner-up position in the tournament in the 2024 edition. Meanwhile, the national professional men's doubles, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, had to forget their desire to defend the championship title when they were shocked by a defeat to the world's 40th ranked pair from South Korea, Kang Min Hyuk-Kim Dong Ju 15-21, 21-15, 21-17 in 56 minutes. It was a double defeat for the world's third-ranked pair, who also failed to defend their Japan Open title when they lost in the final last Sunday. The country's number one men's doubles, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, started the Super 1000 tournament campaign on the right foot when they defeated Danish pair, Rasmus Kjær-Frederik Søgaard 21-19, 21-15 in 41 minutes.
