Watch: Bowl Out Returns After South Africa vs West Indies Legends' Match Gets Tied

West Indies Champions and South Africa Champions presented a thrilling game of cricket for their fans in the ongoing World Championship of Legends and the latter won the match. It was a nostalgic moment for all the fans as they got to witness the iconic bowl out again to decide the winner. It was a rain-hit encounter and the match was reduced to 11-overs per side. South Africa needed a DLS revised target of 81 runs in 11 overs to win the match. However, West Indies were able to restrict them to 80/6 and the match went into a bowl out. During the bowl out, both the teams were allotted five chances and the Proteas played first. Interestingly, South Africa missed the first three chances as Aaron Phangiso, Hardus Viljoen, and Chris Morris failed to hit the stumps. However, Wayne Parnell and JJ Smuts successfully executed the opportunity, giving West Indies a target of three hits. NOSTALGIA FOR FANS - A BOWL OUT IN CRICKET AFTER A LONG TIME. — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) July 20, 2025 The Chris Gayle -led side miserably failed to get even a single hit as Fidel Edwards, Sheldon Cottrell, Ashley Nurse, and Dwayne Bravo could not captialise on the opportunity and the Proteas emerged as the winners. Talking about the WCL, the clash between India Champions and Pakistan Champions, which was scheduled to be played on Sunday, was called-off after many Indian players pulled out. The decision was announced by the organisers on social media after Shikhar Dhawan reiterated his stance of not playing against Pakistan. Ahead of the scheduled Indo-Pak showdown, Dhawan took to social media to share the letter he wrote to the organisers about his decision not to play against Pakistan in the tournament. The decision comes in the wake of the tensions between the two countries on the border, especially after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that led to 26 tourists being killed. While India and Pakistan have not been playing bilateral cricket against each other for more than a decade, the two sides do square off in multi-team events organised by the International Cricket Council and Asian Cricket Council. With the WCL being a private competition, however, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) neither controls the league nor its players.

Good Ol' Days? West Indies-South Africa Match Decided Through Bowl Out

Last Updated: South Africa triumphed over West Indies in a thrilling World Championship of Legends game, decided by a bowl-out after rain disrupted the match. In what was a throwback to the times when T20s were still in their nascent stage, a bowl-out was staged in the World Championship of Legends match between South Africa and the West Indies to determine the winner of the game. The Proteas eventually took the accolades. In a rain-marred game where each side played just 11 overs, South Africa had to chase down 81, but they could manage 80, which led to a bowl-out. The drama of the thriller made it a day to remember for the fans, especially with so many retired players taking the field again. After the match ended in a tie, South Africa Champions edge out the Windies Champions 2-0 in a tense bowl-out 🎯 #WCL2025 — FanCode (@FanCode) July 19, 2025 After the match was reduced to 11 overs, Windies could post 79/5, with Lendl Simmons the highest scorer with 28. Aaron Phangiso picked up two wickets. In the chase, South Africa were reduced to 8/2 in the third over before Hashim Amla and Sarel Erwee added 42 runs for the third wicket. According to bowl-out rules, which are very similar to the penalty shootout in football, the team which hits the stumps the most is declared the winner. South Africa went first, but Phangiso, Chris Morris, and Hardus Viljoen all missed the stumps before JJ Smuts and Wayne Parnell hit right on the target and handed the Windies a target of three to win. For the islanders, Fidel Edwards, Cottrell, Ashley Nurse and Dwayne Bravo all missed the target as South Africa managed a thrilling win. The Proteas will next face India in a classic clash on July 22 in Northampton, while the Windies will take on England on the same day at the same venue. view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 09:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Standard of domestic cricket not as good as 10 years ago says Aaron Phangiso

While Cricket SA continues to interrogate the merits of the current provincial structure, veteran spinner Aaron Phangiso says the quality of cricket being played last season was well below what he experienced during the six team franchise system. 'I played in a tough era,' said the 41 year old left-arm spinner. 'That standard has gone down.' Phangiso played for a star-studded Titans team and later for the Lions during the franchise era, which CSA did away with in 2021 after 17 years. In making that decision, CSA sited financial challenges, which is ironically the same reason being offered for why the current domestic structure comprising 15 teams split into two divisions, is being reviewed. But Phangiso, who spent last season with the Knights, said a lack of experience outside of the main squads and starting teams, was hampering the development of the SA's young players. 'I feel at the moment, the one thing that SA cricket was so quick to do was get rid of experience early on. When guys reach 35 or 36, they stop playing or they are forced out. "They tell guys about contracts, but forgetting that when I started at the Titans, I was playing with Daryll Cullinan, Martin van Jaarsveld and Gerald Dros — those guys played a massive role. "They were older, but they gave us a chance to learn about the game,' said Phangiso. He had a stop-start international career, playing 21 ODIs and 16 T20Is, but at his peak, Phangiso provided control and was an excellent fielder, especially in the inner-ring. He will be part of the SA Legends team heading to England in July for the World Championship of Legends along with AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Chris Morris. Phangiso explained that when he started for the Titans, he bowled against Herschelle Gibbs, Justin Ontong and former England international Owais Shah, who signed as an overseas pro, and it quickly improved his game. 'You can tell the difference in quality.' 'Most teams in the top division nowadays, have one or two batters and if you get rid of those, then the you can 'manage' the rest. We don't have that strength with the batters,' said Phangiso. 'It's almost the same with bowling attack. Back then, say at the Titans, there was Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Albie Morkel, Ethy Mbhalati, that's a strong attack. At provinces now, there are one or two bowlers, and if you look after them, the rest can be managed. The standard is different.' Bjorn Fortuin's spectacular 5-wicket haul took the DP World Lions to the brink of victory. 🔥🏏 An outstanding finish to the season for him—exceptional bowling, finishing with figures of 5 for 123. 👏 #WozaNawe #BePartOfIt #4DaySeries — CSA Domestic Leagues (@DomesticCSA) April 15, 2025 One area Phangiso feels is hurting the local system is the absence of a level below the first team, where players who are out of form can regain their confidence, while assisting younger players who are starting their careers. During the franchise era, teams had a structure below the top teams loosely title semi-professional or amateur where provincial competitions similar to the current structure were played. It allowed those who were not able to crack the first team, to continue play, which a young Phangiso said he found invaluable. 'You could find Pierre Joubert, Dros, Justin Kemp, would play in the 'amateur team' and that gave us the time to learn, but we don't have that now.' 'I was looking at (Keegan Petersen), a guy who's played for the Proteas, after he joined the Titans last season and he couldn't make it into the team for a few weeks. I wondered what he was doing. Sitting at home? Playing club cricket? . "In that amateur system like we used to have, KP would filter down, take time to improve his game, and at the same time five other batters learn from him,' said Phangiso.
