The playmaker picked up a thigh injury during pre-season - in a bounce game against Dunfermline - and is a doubt to take part in the Champions League second qualifying round tie first leg at Ibrox. Rangers Champions League squad revealed for Panathinaikos as huge Aasgaard decision made and quartet miss cut

The new signing was crocked in a bounce game in midweek and reportedly doubtful Rangers injury doubt Thelo Aasgaard has been included in Rangers' Champions League squad - but a host of Ibrox fringe men have found themselves bombed out by new boss Russell Martin. ‌ The former Southampton gaffer will take charge of the Light Blues for the first time on Tuesday night when his team hosts Panathinaikos in their crucial opening qualifier. ‌ But he's still sweating Aasgaard's availability after he picked up a knock in a close-door kick about with Dunfermline this week. ‌ The injury is not expected to keep the new Norway international out of action for long but it is severe enough to make his involvement in the multi-million pound clash with the Greeks uncertain. The good news for the worried Gers faithful, however, is that Aasgaard is on the list of names Light Blues bosses have submitted to Uefa ahead next week's first-leg in Glasgow. However, the signs don't look quite so good for the men who have found themselves surplus to requirements for the game. ‌ Defender Robin Propper - currently in talks with former club FC Twente about a £1.5million return - is omitted, as are Ben Davies, Clinton Nsiala, Jose Cifuentes. All four were left behind in Glasgow last week when Martin's team travelled south for a training base at St George's Park in Burton. Ross McCausland and Ridvan Yilmaz were part of the travelling party but both are absent from the list published on the Gers website. ‌ Crocked winger Rabbi Matondo's name is also missing. Davies spent last season on loan at Birmingham and was joined at St Andrews by Kieran Dowell in January. However, the former Norwich midfielder seems to have impressed the new boss so far in pre-season and has been included alongside Nedim Bajrami, another who seems to have made the most of the clean slate offered by the new management team. ‌ Confirming the squad, a Rangers statement said: 'For the A-list squad, the club were required to name 25-players, including eight who have been locally trained. 'A B-list, made up of young players, was also submitted and features the likes of Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis.' Rangers Champions League squad in full Goalkeepers: Jack Butland, Liam Kelly, Kieran Wright Defenders: Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, Emmanuel Fernandez, Leon King, John Souttar, James Tavernier, Jefte Midfielders: Thelo Aasgaard, Nedim Bajrami, Connor Barron, Lyall Cameron, Oscar Cortes, Mohamed Diomande, Kieran Dowell, Robbie Fraser, Djiedi Gassama, Nico Raskin, Joe Rothwell

Rangers summer signing emerges as injury doubt for Panathinaikos tie

Aasgaard, signed from Luton, will be sent for scans on the injury with the faint hope he can recover quickly to feature in the Champions League second qualifying round. However, it's understood he is a serious doubt to be able to feature in the matchday squad for the first leg on Tuesday, July 22 at Ibrox. There is relief that Aasgaard is not facing a lengthy injury absence but it would still be a blow for Russell Martin to be without the new recruit against Panathinaikos next week. To register their 25-man squad for both legs, Rangers have until Thursday, July 17 at 11pm UK time. Rangers must have at least eight locally trained players included in the 25. Read more: UEFA rules state: "As a minimum, eight places are reserved exclusively for 'locally trained players' and no club may have more than four 'association-trained players' listed in these eight places." Should they get the better of Panathinaikos, Rangers will progress to the third round of qualifying. Win that, and a play-off separates them and a place in the lucrative league phase of the Champions League. On choosing a move to Rangers, Aasgaard said: The history of this club speaks for itself, but the manager being here was a big thing for me. 'Especially playing this style of football. Also, I want to focus on the World Cup next year. That's obviously a massive goal of mine, so it was important for me to be in the top league of a country and playing in a position where I'd be playing for the national team. 'Loads of things like that made Rangers stick out. This move ticked a load of boxes. Playing in Europe would enhance my international chances as well but we've got to get there first. The manager is physically, technically and tactically demanding. But I think that gets the most out of players - and hopefully he can get the best out of me.'
