Outgoing appeals court president to judges: Continue to uphold legacy of justice

KUALA LUMPUR: Outgoing Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim marked his final day in office with a heartfelt farewell, urging the next generation of judges to preserve and strengthen the legacy of the country's judiciary. "I pray that the legacy of the Malaysian judiciary in upholding justice will be continued by the next generation of judges," he said in a note today. He said he trusts the judges will uphold justice with transparency, integrity, and courage. Abang Iskandar's judicial career spanned 18 years, beginning in 2007 and culminating in his appointment as Court of Appeal president, the second-highest judicial office in the country. "It has been a journey filled with challenges that shaped meaningful memories," he said, reflecting on nearly two decades of service. He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities he had received and acknowledged the support of colleagues throughout the judiciary, legal profession, and academia. "During this time, I met many kind, dedicated and noble-hearted individuals… who have always extended their cooperation in the pursuit of justice," he said. Abang Iskandar said their contributions made his duties more manageable, both as Court of Appeal president and as a Federal Court judge. He admitted he would miss the daily camaraderie and wished his colleagues continued success. Describing his emotions as a mixture of joy and sadness, he said retirement would allow him more time with family, charitable work and personal pursuits. "I leave this role with immense gratitude, reflection, and a peaceful heart. This is the start of a new phase in life," he said.

No regrets, says retiring CJ Tengku Maimun

Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat reaches the mandatory retirement age of 66 tomorrow, with today being her last day in office. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : Outgoing Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat says she does not have any regret about her time served in the post or unhappiness over her tenure not being extended. Speaking to the media at the main lobby of the Palace of Justice on her last day today, Tengku Maimun said it had been a great privilege and honour to serve as the 16th chief justice of the Malaysian judiciary. 'No regrets. The fact that my tenure as chief justice has not been extended for another six months, that's also no issue. Six months is insignificant compared with the six years (served in the post),' she said. Tengku Maimun reaches the mandatory retirement age of 66 tomorrow, with today being her last day in office. She became the first woman to helm the judiciary when she was appointed chief justice in 2019. Her expected successor, Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, is due to retire just a day later, while Federal Court judge Nallini Pathmanathan will retire in August. Their retirement has been the centre of heated discussion lately, with the Malaysian Bar saying yesterday that it was deeply concerned over the lack of a formally announced successor to Tengku Maimun. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also said yesterday that extensions to the service of top judges must follow the procedures set out in the Federal Constitution. He said the apparent campaign to pressure the government to either extend or end specific tenures could politicise institutions meant to remain independent. Tengku Maimun said she hoped that her successor would continue her legacy. 'Going by the responses I have received from the public, especially in these last few months, and the speeches this morning from lawyers in court at my last sitting, I think I have been able to restore public confidence in the judiciary to an extent. 'My hope is that this legacy will be continued by whoever succeeds me,' she said.

DAP Central Working Committee: We support a six-month extension of CJ, Appeals Court President

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — DAP's central working committee (CWC) called for the extension of the tenures of Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and President of the Court of Appeal Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim. In a statement, the committee said that an extension while not a right, was in accordance with the Federal Constitution. 'Although such extensions are not as of right, we note the extensions of previous senior judges upon their mandatory retirements and see no reason why the same should not extend to the current Chief Justice and President of the Court of Appeal,' the committee stated. It was of the view that extending the tenures of both personages 'would enhance the government's commitment to the improvement of the administration of justice and the Judiciary with an emphasis on the recognition of merit as a key consideration in the appointment of judges and the extension of their tenures.' The committee also stated that its statement was not meant to 'politicise' the matter but was a means of recognizing Tengku Maimun and Abang Iskandar's contributions and impeccable performance of their duties. It also said that currently the Federal Court has many vacancies left to fill due to recent and impending retirements so retaining the current Chief Justice and President of the Court of Appeal would help ensure a smooth transition of new appointees to the Federal Court. Tengku Maimun's term is set to end today while Abang Iskandar is set to retire tomorrow.
