Boston College student has run marathons all around the world. Now he's trying to break a record.

A Boston College junior has run marathons all around the world an in taking on that challenge, he's also out to set a new world record. In less than two years, 20-year-old James Redding has run all but one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. "It's been something that has been such an eye-opener for me," said Redding. Before he began running around the globe, Redding got his start in high school, running around Brighton alongside his mom. "Me and my mom are so close. We both pushed each other to get better. I pushed her to get out there out of her comfort zone and she held me accountable to keep running when I didn't want to." Despite his love for running, hockey was Redding's first love. It's a passion he now shares with skaters of all ages as a coach at Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton. "That mix between doing something super fast and super fun was something that was such a draw to me," said Redding. "I'm not a person that likes sitting still." "We call him Coach Whiteboard because he wants to coach every aspect of the game," said Matt Cappucci, assistant hockey director at Warrior Ice Arena. "He's trying to help kids at every aspect." But in high school, Redding felt his weight was holding him back from getting more playing time on his varsity hockey team at Brookline. "It came down to 'I'm too big, I can't move my body in the way that I want to move my body,' so I've gotta make a change somehow," said Redding. His solution? Running. He started with 5Ks alongside his mom. Then they graduated to 10Ks and soon after, a half marathon. "Went to her at the finish line, we hadn't even recovered or showered yet, I said, 'Mom, we gotta do a marathon.' And she was like, 'Absolutely not,'" said Redding. He convinced his mom to run Boston when he was still too young. Now a rising junior at BC, he would follow in her footsteps down Boylston Street in 2024. It was his first major marathon. "Turning that corner onto Boylston, the crowds were unlike anything I've ever experienced, ever," said Redding. What's next? That's when Redding set a goal of completing the six Abbot World Marathon Majors by the time he graduated college. Six months after Boston, he ran Chicago. Then weeks later, New York, with the help of his bosses at New Balance getting him in. This year, he traveled to Tokyo, earning a bib through a lotto. New Balance then booked him a spot in London. That leaves only Berlin, which Redding is now preparing to run in September. Crossing that finish line would make him the youngest male runner ever to earn all six of Abbott's stars. "It was a mix of the hookup, the blessing and a little bit of luck was needed, a lot of bit of luck," said Redding. Surreal but not a surprise to those who've seen Redding grow from the rink to the road. "It's a tremendous honor and I think I'm not shocked by it at all. And if you ask me if he's going to do other stuff like that, I would probably say the same thing. He's always 'What's next, what's next, what's next.' Incredible."

Putrajaya mass running event charts 33,000 sign-ups

One of Malaysia's largest mass-participation running events will see 33,000 participants taking to the streets of Putrajaya on July 13. The race has drawn runners, aiming to cross the finish lines in the 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km courses, from more than 48 countries. 'Since our modest beginnings in 2014 with just 3,674 runners, Score Marathon has seen steady but exponential growth over the years,' said Score Sports Management chief executive officer Patricia Tan. 'Last year, over 24,253 runners participated and this year, registrations surged to 33,000, setting a new milestone,' Tan said. AIA Vitality, the health programme by AIA Malaysia, returns as presenting sponsor for the fourth straight year. 'At AIA, we are proud to support a movement that unites runners from all walks of life,' said AIA Malaysia chief marketing officer Chee Foong Wai. 'We're inspired by the spirit of this event and remain committed to supporting and championing initiatives that empower Malaysians to live healthier, longer, better lives,' Wai added. Last year, Score Marathon recycled 1,150kg of plastic, equivalent to 46,320 plastic bottles – setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible sporting events in the region. It also partnered with Pressio, a sportswear brand using bio-based yarns, as official apparel partner, while medals are crafted from recycled materials in collaboration with Natureloop. Score Marathon is supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry and certified a World Athletics Label Road Race. This recognises the full marathon as a qualifying race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors while making its affiliation with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races official, inducting it into an elite group of globally recognised events.

Cape Town Marathon SOLD OUT with 100 days to go

In a landmark moment for African running, the Cape Town Marathon has officially sold out at 24 000 marathon entries for 2025, marking the third consecutive year the event has sold out. This record sell-out is a resounding endorsement of Cape Town's bold journey to become Africa's first Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) event. 'Selling out 24 000 entries at least three months before the event is an incredible milestone, a true testament not only to the Cape Town Marathon organisers' hard work but also to Cape Town and South Africa's growing commitment to running. 'The City of Cape Town is thrilled to lend support to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon as it takes another big step toward becoming a World Marathon Major,' shared JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security. In 2024, the Cape Town Marathon took a major step forward by passing Stage 1 of the Abbott World Marathon Majors assessment, bringing the long-held dream of becoming Africa's first Major firmly within reach. Building on this momentum, the focus in 2025 is on successfully completing Stage 2, the final critical hurdle that would secure the Cape Town Marathon's place as an official Major starting in 2026. This journey has carried the hopes of an entire continent eager to see Africa represented among the world's most prestigious marathon Majors. Clark Gardner, CEO of the Cape Town Marathon, sees this latest milestone as a strategic endorsement from the running community, reinforcing the call for Cape Town to join the global ranks as a World Marathon Major. 'This third consecutive sell-out is not just a testament to the marathon's popularity, but a powerful statement of intent,' Gardner says. 'It signals that Africa is ready and deserving to stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Boston, London, New York, and the other Majors. 'Our runners, sponsors, partners, and the entire Cape Town community have made it clear that we are united in our vision to bring a World Marathon Major home.' The sell-out is a powerful show of support from the running community, a clear sign of their unwavering belief in Cape Town's Major dream. It also underscores the critical role of sponsors and partners, whose commitment and investment have been instrumental in propelling the event onto the global stage. This collective effort, from everyday runners to strategic stakeholders, has transformed the marathon into a movement that aims to redefine Africa's place in world running history. While the marathon has steadily drawn international attention, the true transformation will unfold once Major status is officially conferred. From 2026 onwards, the Cape Town Marathon is projected to welcome more than 20 000 international visitors each year, turning the city into a global running destination and creating significant economic and tourism benefits. Entries for the 5km and 10km Peace Runs remain open until 26 September 2025 or until they sell out, as do entries for the popular trail events (11km, 22km, and 43km), all taking place on Saturday, 18 October. With just over 100 days to go until race day on 19 October, organisers are now fully focused on delivering a seamless, world-class event that could finally secure the Cape Town Marathon's place among the global greats. SCORE Marathon hits record 33,000 runners from 48 countries

KUALA LUMPUR: The SCORE Marathon is back with a bang, drawing a record-breaking 33,000 runners from 48 countries for this year's edition in Putrajaya on July 13, marking a 36 per cent surge in participation from last year. The marathon continues its rise as one of the country's largest and most internationally recognised races, now earning the prestigious World Athletics Label Road Race status, placing it among only 301 certified events globally and just three in Malaysia with the honour. What began as a modest health initiative in 2014 with 3,674 runners has become a standout fixture in the regional racing calendar, combining mass participation with elite-level competition and offering qualifying status for the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Backed by the Youth and Sports Ministry and affiliated with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the race now stands tall on the world stage. The race will feature four distances — 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km. Patricia Tan, CEO of Score Sports Management, said the surge in participation reflects a decade of dedication and community spirit. "Since our humble beginnings, we've seen steady but exponential growth," she said. "In 2024, we had over 24,000 participants. This year, registrations rocketed to 33,000 — a milestone for us." AIA Vitality, the science-backed health programme by AIA Malaysia, returns as Presenting Sponsor for the fourth straight year. The event also raises the bar on sustainability. Last year's edition recycled 1,150kg of plastic, equal to over 46,000 bottles. For this year, the green drive continues with finisher tees made from bio-based yarns and medals crafted from recycled materials. In the lead-up to race day, the SCORE Marathon Running Clinic Tour will be held in the Klang Valley, helping runners of all levels gear up for July 13.
