Magdy Abdel-Atty named Modern Sport new coach - Egyptian Football

Egyptian Premier League side Modern Sport have appointed Magdy Abdel-Atty as their new coach, the Cairo-based club announced on Thursday. Related Ittihad of Alexandria appoint Ahmed Sami as new coach Abdel-Atty replaces Algerian coach Abdelhak Benchikha, who parted ways with the club following a string of poor results. Modern Sport had been widely tipped for relegation last season, but escaped the drop after the Egyptian Pro League cancelled relegation for the current campaign. Abdel-Atty began last season in charge of another Egyptian Premier League club, ZED FC, but was dismissed midway through the campaign due to poor performances. He later took charge of Ittihad of Alexandria before leaving at the end of the season. German foreign minister says Israel-Iran de-escalation still possible

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said he still believes Israel and Iran can reach a negotiated solution, despite Israeli attacks on Iranian territory and Tehran's retaliatory strikes on Friday. "There are joint efforts to help calm the situation in this extremely critical position," the minister said at a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdel-Atty in Cairo. "No one wants a further escalation of the situation, especially a military one, here in the region," Wadephul added. Abdel-Atty said the use of force would not provide stability for the region and illusions of power would not bring security to Israel or any other party. "There will be no solution in the region without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital," Abdel-Atty added. "Unfortunately there have been too few credible steps taken by the Iranian side in the past to distance itself from its nuclear programme," Wadephul said. He called on both sides to reconsider their positions and do what the international community expects of them and find a negotiated solution. Cairo is the first stop on Wadephul's tour of the Middle East. Following the escalation between Israel and Iran, the German foreign minister has cancelled planned stops in Jordan and Israel, and plans to travel on to Saudi Arabia instead for a meeting with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on Saturday.

Egypt condemns Israeli decision to halt all Gaza aid

Egypt has criticized Israel's decision to halt all aid deliveries into Gaza, as Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty said on Sunday that starvation should not be used as a weapon. "The deal includes a full flow of aid, and it cannot be allowed or accepted that aid is used as a weapon for collective punishment and starvation," he said. "This is considered as a blatant and clear violation of international humanitarian law," Abdel-Atty told a press conference. "If the first stage has ended, then we must now begin talks about the second phase," he said, adding that mediators will continue their intensive efforts to sustain the ceasefire. Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been acting as mediators between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Egypt's top diplomat rejects displacement, urges Gaza reconstruction

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty reiterated his country's "complete rejection" of the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza during his first meeting with his American counterpart, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in Washington. During the meeting, Abdel-Atty stressed the need for speeding up the reconstruction of Gaza - with the Palestinians who call the territory home living there, an Egyptian foreign ministry statement said. The meeting comes shortly after controversial remarks by US President Donald Trump, whose plan for the US to "take over Gaza" and resettle the residents would not give them the right to return to the territory. Trump has called for Egypt and Jordan to take in the Palestinians. "Egypt looks forward to coordinate with the US administration to work to achieve the desired just peace in the Middle East in a way that responds to the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, most notably their right to establish their independent state on all their national soil," the statement read. Abdel-Atty also called for working towards a "political horizon that would end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict," in accordance with the two-state solution.
