Egypt's FM, EU Envoy Discuss Gaza Ceasefire, West Bank Violence, Peace Prospects

By Ahmad El-Assasy Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, held talks on Sunday, June 29, with Christophe Bigot, the European Union's Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process, to discuss urgent developments in Gaza and the broader Palestinian territories. According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the meeting focused on Egypt's diplomatic efforts, in coordination with Qatar and the United States, to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, facilitate the exchange of hostages and detainees, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave. Minister Abdel Aaty highlighted the grave humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and criticized Israel's ongoing obstruction of aid access. He reiterated Egypt's firm rejection of any forced displacement of Palestinians and emphasized Cairo's readiness to host a conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, once a ceasefire agreement is reached. The minister also raised alarm over the escalating violence in the occupied West Bank, warning of the dangers posed by continued Israeli military operations in Palestinian towns and villages, and condemned the frequent and brutal settler attacks on Palestinian civilians. Abdel Aaty reaffirmed Egypt's support for the international conference on the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue, which is being jointly proposed by France and Saudi Arabia. Ahmed Emam Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks with his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, on the sidelines of the Oslo Forum, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation and addressing regional developments in Gaza and Sudan. The meeting underscored the growing momentum in Egyptian-Norwegian relations, with Abdel Aaty praising recent political and economic progress between the two nations. He highlighted the ongoing dialogue at the highest levels, including President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's visit to Norway in December 2024, and welcomed the launch of regular political consultations, as agreed upon during that visit. Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's interest in strengthening economic collaboration, particularly in renewable energy. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of Norwegian company Scatec in Egypt and looked forward to the implementation of new joint projects that would boost Norwegian investment in the country. Trade between the two nations was another focal point, with Abdel Aaty encouraging the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries (Norfund) to consider increasing their financial support for Norwegian companies operating in Egypt, particularly in clean energy and aquaculture sectors. He noted that these efforts would benefit from Egypt's recent economic reforms. The Egyptian minister also voiced interest in expanding trilateral cooperation in Africa, citing Norway's strategic engagement with the continent following the launch of its Africa Strategy in August 2024. On regional issues, both ministers exchanged views on the situation in Gaza. Abdel Aaty commended Norway's long-standing support for Palestinian rights and international law, and outlined Egypt's intensive efforts to broker a ceasefire, facilitate humanitarian aid, and mitigate the worsening humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave. He reiterated Egypt's firm position on the Palestinian cause, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Regarding Sudan, Abdel Aaty reaffirmed Egypt's support for the unity and stability of its southern neighbor. He stressed the importance of safeguarding Sudan's national institutions, sovereignty, and territorial integrity amid the ongoing conflict. Egypt's Foreign Minister expresses desire to strengthen ties with Mauritania

CAIRO - 27 May 2025: Egypt's Foreign Minister and Minister of Immigration Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty expressed Cairo's strong desire to elevate its bilateral ties with Mauritania, especially in the economic and trade sectors, during a diplomatic visit to Nouakchott on Tuesday. In his meeting with Mohamed Salem Ould Merzouk, Mauritania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, Dr. Abdel Aaty praised the close coordination and cooperation between the two countries' foreign ministries and reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to deepening this relationship across all sectors. Dr. Abdel Aaty also conveyed Egypt's appreciation for Mauritania'ssupport of Egyptian candidates in various international forums, including the nomination of Dr. Khaled El-Anany for the position of UNESCO Director-General. Highlighting the economic potential of the partnership, the Egyptian minister expressed hope that the upcoming Egypt-Mauritania Economic Forum would serve as a powerful catalyst for strengthening cooperation between the two nations' business communities. He emphasized Egypt's readiness to share its expertise and support Mauritania in executing development projects across various sectors.
