WATCH: Giants' Abdul Carter in action at 2025 training camp

New York Giants football is back. Officially. Big Blue opened their 2025 training camp on Wednesday, and we're already getting our first glimpse at rookie first-round pick Abdul Carter in action. Check it out: The Giants selected Carter with the third overall pick, and he's expected to emerge as the team's best pass rusher on a defense that already includes Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Dexter Lawrence. Carter and fellow first-round pick, Jaxson Dart, will be the primary focus of New York Giants fans who attend training camp practices. And while it may take some time before Dart cracks the starting lineup, it'll be all gas and no brakes for Carter from Week 1. MORE NEW YORK GIANTS COVERAGE

Penn State takes top spot in USA TODAY Sports Big Ten power rankings

There is no denying that Penn State is preparing for one of the more anticipated seasons in program history after making a run to the College Football Playoff semifinal last season. The bar has been raised by many for the Nittany Lions, and the hype train continues to be roaring at full steam heading into the 2025 season. That hype continued to rise with the Nittany Lions landing on top of the Big Ten preseason power rankings from USA TODAY Sports college football writer Paul Myerberg. Yes, Penn State comes out ahead of the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes and the defending Big Ten champion Oregon Ducks, respectively. That has been the fairly common belief by those around the college football media circles this offseason in part due to a roster returning many key players on each side of the ball, despite losing first-round draft picks in Abdul Carter and Tyler Warren, and adding key transfers to help plug the void at the wide receiver position. The addition of Trebor Pena from Syracuse is considered a major upgrade for an offense that already added a pair of other talented wide receivers in the offseason. Penn State's rise to the top of the Big Ten power rankings is focused largely on the expectations for the offense. The return of Drew Allar at quarterback and both star running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen gives Penn State as solid a returning backfield as we may see this season in all of college football. Penn State's schedule is also moderately favorable, with the biggest challenge coming with a road trip to Ohio State and getting Oregon at home for a primetime whiteout game highlighting the home schedule. According to the power rankings from Myerberg, Penn State will face five of the Big Ten's top-10 teams this season. Three of those games will come at home (Oregon, Indiana, and Nebraska), and the other two will be on the road (at Ohio State and at Iowa). New York Giants named among top defenses primed to break out in 2025

The New York Giants defense spent the offseason adding some new faces in hopes of taking a major step forward during the upcoming season. Not only did New York add some vital pieces to the secondary in free agency, such as cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland, but they also added a blue-chip prospect to the pass rush when they selected Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Advertisement When looking at the top defenses primed to break out in 2025, The Athletic's Ted Nguyen included the Giants as a unit to keep an eye on. The Giants finished 28th in DVOA last year, but the tools are there to make a significant jump. However, they have the hardest schedule in the league on paper and they need the offense to help get opponents in passing situations. The only major upgrade on that side was signing quarterback Russell Wilson (the plan is to let first-round pick Jaxson Dart sit and develop). There's potential for a breakout here, but it may not be significant enough to make a major difference in the win/loss column in 2025. Entering the second season under defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, the Giants have a handful of pieces that need to integrate into the scheme rather quickly. With that said, there's clearly an increased level of talent at all three levels. There are a handful of factors that will drive the defense's results, but the entire unit will be based on the backbone of the pass rush, which should feature a quartet of strong assets leading the way. With several question marks facing the Giants this offseason, the defense is one area that seems to have a more positive outlook than other parts of the roster. As the New York Giants enter the 2025 NFL season, one of their first-round rookies makes one thing clear: they are not to be viewed as a rookie. Abdul Carter took to Instagram to send a clear message to the NFL. "Year 1, I ain't no rookie," Carter wrote on his personal Instagram account. "[I've] been playing this game a long time. Ball is ball. I love this [expletive]." The Pennsylvania native took his talents to his state's top school for his NCAA run. At Penn State, Carter started nearly half of his games as a freshman. He collected 56 tackles and 6.5 sacks through his first season at the NCAA level. His production took a slight dip, as he picked up 48 tackles and just 4.5 sacks. Collecting 16 games of action last year, the numbers were back up in a big way. Carter ended up totaling 68 tackles. He got to the quarterback for 12 sacks, and he forced two fumbles throughout the year. Although Carter's fandom of the Philadelphia Eagles led many to believe his hometown team would attempt to work wonders to get him after they won the Super Bowl for the second time in franchise history, there was no trade-up to one or two for Philadelphia. Carter was on the board when the Giants went on the clock with the third-overall pick. It was a no-brainer selection for New York, which already has a stellar pass rush. The early reports that came from spring practice suggested he's had a dominant presence and has already looked as good as advertised—if not better. This week, Carter will join his fellow rookies in reporting to the Giants' training camp for the first few days. On July 22, the rest of the team is expected to report, joining Carter and the group of rookies after they get their feet wet. Carter's first game opportunity will come on August 9, when the Giants will pay a visit to the Buffalo Bills for an afternoon kickoff.
