Dubai Energy and Logistics Giants Forge Emergency Alliance

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai ENOC Group and DP World have formalised a significant Memorandum of Understanding today in Dubai to enhance emergency response capabilities across the emirate's energy and logistics infrastructure. The agreement mandates an annual coordinated drill and shared updates to crisis protocols, underlining a commitment to reducing response times and bolstering resilience. The pact was signed at ENOC's headquarters by Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO of ENOC, and Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC. Al Falasi commented that the MoU 'marks a significant stride forward in solidifying our commitment to the highest safety standards and emergency preparedness', while Bin Damithan emphasised that safety 'underpins everything we do at DP World'. ADVERTISEMENT Under the MoU, ENOC and DP World will conduct a yearly joint exercise involving both companies' emergency teams. This drill aims to sharpen training, preparedness and coordination. Additionally, both firms will regularly revise emergency response plans and align on external engagement protocols for rapid and unified action. The agreement builds on ENOC's ongoing investment in emergency readiness. In 2022, the company launched an Emergency Response Centre in Jebel Ali in collaboration with Dubai Civil Defence. Its personnel have also undergone advanced HAZMAT and fire-risk assessment training at the International Fire Training Centre in the UK—equipping first responders to handle complex rescue operations in high-risk settings. Industry observers note that this partnership addresses key vulnerabilities in energy and logistics sectors—areas crucial to Dubai's economic stability. By synchronising emergency plans and conducting joint drills, both entities aim to strengthen institutional preparedness and minimise disruption. From a strategic standpoint, DP World's endorsement of this MoU underscores its broader resilience agenda. The global ports and logistics firm has in the past engaged in humanitarian logistics initiatives, such as disaster-relief coordination via its Logistics Emergency Team in crises like Ukraine and Haiti. Aligning with ENOC's fire and hazmat capabilities provides the potential for a more comprehensive emergency response ecosystem. Public safety experts say coordinated exercises are vital for effective crisis management, as they test systems, highlight operational shortcomings, and reinforce communication between organisations—especially in high-stakes environments like oil terminals and container ports. Dubai continues to elevate its emergency preparedness. Government entities regularly collaborate with corporate partners to mount drills and capacity building, aiming to keep pace with the complexities of rapid urban growth and sectoral interdependence. With this MoU, ENOC and DP World are not merely aiming to improve reactive measures; they are fostering a forward-looking culture of continuous preparedness. Regular joint drills, shared emergency planning and cross-company collaboration set a benchmark for crisis readiness across the UAE's critical infrastructure sectors.

Maritime leaders call for innovation, partnership to keep trade moving

Resilience, partnership, innovation and sustainability will define the future of maritime logistics and that's where the Gulf has a real opportunity to lead, a top executive has said. Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director, DP World GCC, said: 'Let me start with resilience. More and more global operators are turning to the Gulf for stability. In a sector facing uncertainty, our region has proven to be an anchor point of stability, certainty and security. This is no accident. It's the result of years of coordinated investment in maritime infrastructure. "The Middle East has multimodal marine networks that connect over 150 ports worldwide. From the $800 million expansion of the South Container Terminal in Jeddah to advanced automation at Jebel Ali, we are building smart, resilient maritime networks that can adapt to demand," he said. He was speaking at the 11th Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East conference and exhibition, which opened in Dubai on Tuesday (May 6). It was officially inaugurated by Eng Hessa Al Malek, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure; Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director, DP World GCC; Andrew Williams, President, Seatrade Maritime, part of Informa Markets, and senior representatives of the maritime community. In a video address to a packed Main Stage, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy & Infrastructure, Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure said: 'We aim to position UAE Maritime Week among the world's top maritime events, with all stakeholders' engagement in shaping the future of this industry. The UAE continues to rise as a global logistic hub, guided by visionary leadership and bold strategies. 'In the UAE, we continue to improve the ports' handling capacity, which today handles over 21 million TEUs. The maritime sector contributes nearly 136 billion dirhams, or $37 billion to our GDP, with a target to increase it to 200 billion dirhams, or more than $54 billion in the near future.' Speaking to 2050 net-zero targets, he added: 'In our view, the world needs to be aligned when it comes to net-zero targets by 2050, and for us in the UAE, we will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the UAE Net-Zero target by 2050.' Meanwhile, Damithan further said: "Our industry has always been seen as slow and resistant to change – but I believe this stereotype is changing fast. In the past year, I have seen digitalisation and automation projects jump forward. From AI tools that help choose the best routes and save fuel, to digital twins and predictive analytics, innovation is front and centre. Today, platforms like CARGOES Flow have made our region a leader in anticipating disruption before it happens. This level of automation supports how our ports work together as part of a coordinated system. From gates to cranes to yard equipment, this technology is reducing human error, speeding up operations, and improving vessel call performance. Even upstream, we're seeing the positive impact this can have. 'Which brings me to my final point: sustainability. Maritime shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global emissions. And we can't stand still – even if the odds seem against us. Regulatory frameworks are already shaping how vessels operate and where they berth. We have no choice but to decarbonise – and fast. The good news is that the Gulf is ahead of the curve, because we're using maritime infrastructure to keep change within reach. Port equipment has been electrified across terminals. Investments are being made in shore power so all vessels can plug in at berth – reducing emissions, noise, and fuel burn. And with the UAE now home to the world's first carbon removal deal for a port operator, we're setting the bar for what comes next." He ended with a resounding call to action: 'The global trade landscape is changing. Today the waters are rough, and trade maps are being redrawn. But I am confident that we can navigate it successfully. Let's move together. Let's move smarter. And above all - let's keep trade moving.' The UAE Maritime Week is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure with Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East held as the focal exhibition and conference of the week-long activities.

DP World's deep-water port project in Congo moves forward

DP World has selected Mota-Engil, a renowned and experienced construction company, to lead the development of the Banana Port, a vital project that will strengthen the DRC's position as a key trade hub. This partnership marks a major milestone in realising the Banana Port project, which is set to transform the country's trade landscape by providing state-of-the-art infrastructure, reducing business costs, and reinforcing the DRC's economic independence. The Banana Port will be developed in phases with the first phase designed to accommodate the world's largest vessels and featuring a 600-metre quay, handling capacity of 450,000 TEUs per year and storage 30 hectares of storage area. The second phase will extend the quay wall by over 2 kilometres. The construction of the port will involve numerous companies, including local enterprises and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, providing new opportunities for Congolese workers and businesses. As the country's first fully-equipped maritime gateway, it will cut transport costs, improve trade efficiency, and support local industries, from agriculture to manufacturing. Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said that DP World is committed to ensuring the construction of world-class infrastructure to the highest standards, boosting economic growth and creating new opportunities for the Congolese people. Meanwhile on Wednesday DP World has launched a cutting-edge electric freight solution at Jebel Ali Port in partnership with Einride, marking a major step towards decarbonising terminal operations. Now running around-the-clock, the first wave of the electric fleet is set to move over 204,000 twenty-foot containers annually, supporting DP World's efforts to accelerate the transition to greener logistics. The project is part of a groundbreaking partnership between DP World and Einride signed in May 2024 to electrify inter-terminal container flows at Jebel Ali Port, the largest seaport in the Middle East. It aligns with DP World's broader sustainability agenda which includes electrifying its fleet of internal terminal vehicles (ITVs) and implementing innovative partnerships to reduce emissions. The initiative will reduce 14,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) annually, compared to diesel operations, supporting DP World's science-based targets (SBTi) and ambition to make global trade smarter and greener. Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director, DP World GCC, said, 'Decarbonising logistics is a core priority for DP World. We are actively electrifying our operations, integrating AI-powered solutions and working closely with our partners like Einride to support our net zero goals. As the 10th busiest port globally, Jebel Ali is setting the benchmark for the electrification of transport in high-volume trade hubs.' Robert Falck, CEO and Founder at Einride, said, 'This marks the first of many milestones as we set out to have the largest deployment of electric, autonomous freight mobility in the Middle East. The UAE is uniquely positioned to lead this sustainable transition given its forward-thinking approach to innovation, and we are proud to drive this in partnership with DP World.' The electric fleet is being deployed as part of a multi-phased rollout, which integrates Einride's full platform, including electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and the AI-driven Einride Saga operating system. A second wave will follow later this year, and the full fleet in 2026 - capable of moving 2 million twenty-foot containers annually. This tiered deployment uses Einride's data-driven analysis to optimise cost and operational efficiency while laying the groundwork for future autonomous deployment. DP World has completed a major $400 million expansion project at the Port of Callao in Peru in 2024, boosting container handling capacity at the South Terminal by 80 per cent and solidifying Callao's position as the key gateway for global trade on the west coast of South America. The Bicentennial Pier expansion project extends the pier from 650 meters to 1,050 meters, making Callao one of the few ports in South America capable of accommodating three vessels (or two mega-vessels) simultaneously. The project increases handling capacity from 1.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year to 2.7 million TEUs, while the container yard space has also been expanded to a total of 40 hectares. The project is a key part of DP World's ambitions for Latin America, announced last month. Given its proximity to the capital, Lima and complementing the growth of nearby Jorge Chávez Airport, the development elevates the Port of Callao from an efficient port to a premier logistics hub for the entire region.
