Kuwait's Special Olympics team gears up for first MENA equestrian competition

KUWAIT CITY, July 1: The Kuwaiti Special Olympics delegation is set to participate in the first regional equestrian competition organized by Special Olympics Middle East and North Africa. The event, hosted in Al Ain from August 24 to 28, is organized by the Special Olympics UAE in collaboration with the regional body, under the patronage of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, and hosted by the Abu Dhabi Police General Command's Special Patrols Department within the Criminal Security Sector. Athletes from ten Arab countries will take part in this significant regional event, representing their respective Special Olympics programs. Hana Al-Zawawi, President of Special Olympics Kuwait and head of the Kuwaiti delegation, confirmed that three riders will represent Kuwait: Basma Al-Busaili, Maryam Diab, and Abdullah Al-Ali. Al-Zawawi highlighted Kuwait's progress in building a strong foundation in equestrian sports, noting the international and regional successes of its athletes. Rider Basma Al-Busaili earned three silver medals at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin. In comparison, Abdullah Al-Ali secured two gold medals at the 2023 Special Olympics National Games in Egypt. She expressed full confidence in the Kuwaiti riders, who are training under the guidance of coaches Sarah Bou Hamdi and Mohammed Al-Kandari, to continue achieving excellence on the regional stage. Al-Zawawi also extended her heartfelt appreciation to the athletes and their families for their dedication and support, emphasizing their crucial role in ensuring Kuwait's success in this important Arab sporting event.

CCQ launches third phase of its Academic Competencies initiative

Tribune News Network Doha The Community College of Qatar (CCQ) has officially launched the third phase of its national initiative, Academic Cadres 2025 - 2026, building on the strong momentum established by the first two phases. The earlier phases successfully attracted qualified national talent and expanded the college's culture of academic excellence. This new phase aligns with CCQ's ongoing vision to create a sustainable academic environment by investing in highly qualified human capital and establishing long-term academic and professional development pathways for national talent. The initiative continues in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau. It aims to accelerate the recruitment of Qatari nationals holding masters and doctoral degrees to join the college's academic staff in the upcoming academic year. In 2024, the second phase of the initiative opened 14 academic positions. A total of 117 applicants submitted their candidacy through the national employment platform Kawader. After interviewing 29 candidates, CCQ appointed 14 who met the college's hiring and scholarship criteria. As a result, the percentage of faculty members hired through the Academic Competencies initiative has grown from 8% prior to the initiative to 22% today; this is a significant 14% increase. This progress highlights the initiative's success in strengthening the presence of national talent in higher education and positioning competence as a key factor in faculty recruitment. Within this framework of continued cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, 11 faculty members holding master's degrees have completed the necessary procedures for scholarship approval to pursue their PhDs at the ministry's designated universities. This effort supports a broader national strategy for sustainable academic development. The initiative has yielded strong results over the past two academic years. In 2023 - 2024, CCQ faculty hired through the programme taught a total of 52 courses out of 1,675 offered (3.1%). This number more than doubled in 2024 - 2025, with 117 courses out of 1,686 (6.9%) taught by the initiative's participants. These figures reflect a significant qualitative leap in the academic contributions of the program's members. Commenting on the launch of the new phase, Dr Khalid Al-Horr, president of the Community College of Qatar, said: 'The launch of phase three of the Academic Competencies initiative marks another step forward in CCQ's mission to attract promising academic talent and enhance our instructional capacity. The numbers speak for themselves. In just two years, we have seen course contributions double and appointment rates rise sharply.' Dr Abdullah Al-Ali, vice president for Academic Affairs, added: 'Empowering Qatari academics and supporting their professional and scholarly development lies at the heart of our academic strategy. That is why the initiative continues to evolve in a thoughtful, sustainable way. We are already seeing its positive impact in the classroom and in the growing interest in academic careers. This third phase represents a more mature, far-reaching version of the programme, especially as it targets disciplines that align with the college's strategic priorities and market needs. These efforts promise to enhance the educational experience we provide and prepare our students to lead the future.' Noor Al-Baqali, head of Workforce Planning and Recruitment at the college, said: 'For CCQ, the Academic Competencies initiative is part of a comprehensive system designed to develop local talent and provide long-term career growth opportunities. Every appointment is a long-term investment in our academic infrastructure. That is why we take pride in the programme's impact on hiring and scholarship rates. Kuwait's Ministry of Defense Mourns Two Soldiers Killed in Training Exercise

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 19: The Minister of Defense, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ali, along with all military and civilian members of the Ministry of Defense, mourned the tragic loss of two soldiers, First Sergeant Ahmed Farhan Harat and Sergeant Assistant Dhahi Saleh, who passed away on Wednesday evening while carrying out a night shooting exercise with live ammunition. Both soldiers were members of the Land Forces. In an official statement, the Ministry of Defense conveyed its deepest condolences, with Minister Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ali praying for the mercy of the deceased and asking for their place in God's eternal paradise. He also offered his prayers for patience and strength to their grieving families. In addition to the two deceased, the General Staff announced that Corporal Anwar Khalaf Radwan and Corporal Mutlaq Muhammad Mubarak were injured during the final exercise of the "Desert Observer 4". They were immediately taken to Al-Jahra Hospital for treatment. The competent authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the incident and are working to determine all its details. The Ministry of Defense has expressed its wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured soldiers. As the investigation continues, the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Army reaffirm their commitment to upholding the highest safety standards in training exercises while honoring the brave sacrifices of their soldiers.
