Sonsoddo burial site gradient spurs worry in Muslim group
1 2 Margao: As the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) awaits the execution of a deed of exchange with the Confraria of the Chapel of Borda to resolve the encroachment issue at the proposed Sonsoddo kabrastan site, the Muslim community has raised apprehensions. The community has reservations about probable development restrictions due to the steep gradient of the location. The 30,000sqm site was acquired by the MMC in 2021 for the burial ground project. According to a recent letter from MMC chief officer Melvyn Vaz to the deputy collector, the council is seeking a deed of exchange following the discovery that 1,000sqm of the acquired land was encroached upon. The MMC, at the council meeting held recently, gave its nod for signing the deed of exchange. The high court, in its order dated June 24, 2024, directed that an equivalent area be provided as access to the acquired property. Subsequently, the Confraria submitted grants of easement — the legal right that allows one party to use another party's land for a specific purpose, However, the Muslim community's representative, Abdulmatin Daud Carol, has expressed serious concerns about the viability of the site for development. 'With a gradient as steep as 65-70%, would govt even allow construction on this slope?' Carol said. 'It is evident that the land falls under a no-development zone. Govt doesn't come clear on this, and the proposal is kept hanging.' The land was originally acquired through a 2010 resolution for all three communities but was modified in 2011 to serve exclusively as a burial ground for the Muslim community.

Salcete told to tackle kabrastan crisis as Margao overburdened
Margao: The existing kabrastan (burial ground) at Pajifond in Margao serves the needs of the Muslim community for villages across Salcete taluka, creating an unsustainable burden on a single facility meant to serve only Margao town. This anomaly has now prompted the directorate of panchayats to issue an urgent directive to the Salcete block development officer (BDO), following persistent pleas from the community. In a recent memorandum, the director of panchayats instructed the Salcete BDO to direct all village panchayat secretaries of Salcete to discuss the kabrastan issue in their fortnightly meetings and submit detailed reports within 15 days. The panchayat secretaries have also been directed to 'take appropriate action' in the matter. Abdulmatin Daud Carol, who is representing the Muslim community in the kabrastan issue, in his complaint filed with the directorate of panchayats, pointed out that the Pajifond kabrastan regularly receives bodies from villages including Rumdamol, Davorlim, Sao Jose de Areal, Nessai, Chandor, Curtorim, Navelim, Sirlim, Telaulim, Sarzora, Seralim, and Betalbatim. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cuối cùng, chơi miễn phí game chiến thuật hay nhất 2025! ' 'Once and when the burial grounds are set up in every village panchayat's jurisdiction, it will solve the problem of the Muslim community of Margao,' Carol said. 'There are 30 or more burials every month at the Pajifond kabrastan, and most of them are of those from beyond Margao.' Carol said directives have been issued by the Human Rights Commission and the state chief secretary to village panchayats 'right from 2016 onwards, yet many panchayats have failed to establish burial facilities within their jurisdictions.'

Sonsoddo gradient: Muslim groups question kabrastan site feasibility
Margao: As the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) works to remove bottlenecks in its long-pending kabrastan project, Muslim community members are pointing to an existing consultancy report to question the feasibility of the 30,000sqm land acquired at Sonsoddo. They said only 2,500sqm would actually be available for burial purposes. The community's concerns are based on the consultant's survey report, which identified the difficult terrain of the acquired plot. It stated that much of the land has a gradient higher than 25% and is not developable under the current town and country planning rules and regulations. The consultant found that substantial hill cutting and land development would be required to make even the small usable portion suitable for burial purposes. According to the survey, only the lower southern section of the plot, measuring approximately 2,500sqm and 15m wide, could potentially be developed after extensive hill cutting. The steep gradient of the land has emerged as the primary constraint limiting the project's scope. Abdulmatin Daud Carol, a representative of the Muslim community in the kabrastan matter, said the access road leading to the proposed kabrastan has a steep 60-degree gradient. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Also, a mandatory 30m buffer zone would be required, constraining the usable area even more, he said. The MMC earlier decided to reserve 1,000sqm of the 30,000sqm land for the burial of persons of different faiths. On Wednesday, the MMC unanimously agreed to sign a deed of exchange for land with the parties concerned, which is required for an access road to the proposed kabrastan site. This followed a fresh survey report that revealed encroachments on the access road to the site. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . In kabrastan headway, MMC to swap land with Raia comunidade
Margao: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday unanimously agreed to sign a deed of exchange for land with Raia comunidade, which is required for an access road to the proposed kabrastan site at Sonsoddo. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The latest development came after a fresh survey report revealed encroachments on the access road to the site. The MMC previously acquired 30,000sqm of land from the comunidade for the burial ground project, but the survey findings highlighted complications with the access route. When the matter was presented before the high court, where proceedings related to the kabrastan issue are under way, negotiations for a settlement between the parties began. In response to the encroachment findings, Raia comunidade offered alternative land for the access road. However, the initial offer included only easementary rights to the alternative land, rather than the full ownership title. Easementary rights legally allow one property's owner or occupier to use another property for a specific purpose. Following legal advice, the MMC lawyer recommended that since easementary rights do not confer ownership rights to the MMC, a deed of exchange be executed between the council and the comunidade of Raia. The Sonsoddo kabrastan issue has been a contentious matter for over a decade. The land at Sonsoddo was originally acquired by the MMC as a burial ground for all three communities through a 2010 resolution. Subsequently, the MMC decided that at least 1,000sqm of the 30,000sqm at Sonsoddo would be reserved as a burial ground for persons of different faiths. Meanwhile, Abdulmatin Daud Carol, who represents the Muslim community on the kabrastan issue, met South Goa collector Egna Cleetus on Wednesday to express his disappointment over the delay in resolving the matter. The collector is learnt to have assured Carol that she would study the consultant's report and take appropriate action. Carol also highlighted the urgency of the situation, expressing concerns that further delays could create tensions given the acute shortage of burial space. He said there is no space left in the existing kabrastan in Margao.
