1 2 Ranchi: The Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department ( IMD ) on Sunday issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in four districts on Monday. Ranchi-IMD scientist Abhishek Anand said, "There is a strong possibility of heavy rainfall in Gumla, Simdega, Khunti, and West Singhbhum districts on Monday due to the combined effect of unseasonal weather systems. The public is advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions," he added. June's 11-year rainfall record in state broken this year

Ranchi: June 2025 has entered the state's record books as the wettest June in the last 11 years, even more than heavy rainfall months like July and August, and soaking Jharkhand with a whopping 348.9 mm of rainfall, 84% above the monthly average of 189.5 mm. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The last time the state saw more rain in June was in 2021, when Jharkhand recorded 266.9 mm of rainfall during the month. While four districts in the state received normal rainfall in June this year, three other districts received excess rainfall and 14 districts received large excess rainfall. Three more districts — Deoghar, Godda and Pakur — received deficient rainfall. In June this year, East Singhbhum district recorded the highest rainfall, followed by Ranchi, Latehar and Saraikela Kharsawan. Explaining the reason behind this whopping amount of rainfall in June this year, Ranchi IMD deputy director and weather scientist Abhishek Anand said two low-pressure systems created in the state from the Bay of Bengal during the month have resulted in the increased rainfall. "Usually, such heavy rainfall takes place in the state between July and August, as a result of lower pressure systems. But this year the system was created in June and it resulted in increased rainfall. This shows abrupt changes in climatic conditions fuelled by various factors, including rapid environmental degradation and increasing pollution among various others," Anand added. The weather expert further said climate change has been resulting in increased extreme climatic events in recent times. "Be it rain, heat or cold, extreme climatic conditions are increasing across the globe. The wet spell in the state is expected to continue in the coming days in July as well," Anand added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to statistics provided by the Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in June 2015, Jharkhand recorded 182.3mm rainfall, followed by 118.8 mm in 2016, 116 mm in 2017, 128 mm in 2018, 89.3 mm in 2019, and 208 mm in 2020. In the following two years from 2019, during the Covid pandemic years 2020 and 2021, the state recorded increased rainfall — 208 mm and 266.9 mm. On Tuesday, Ranchi and Daltonganj recorded 10.8 mm rainfall while Jamshedpur received 2.7 mm and Bokaro 1.2 mm. The highest for the day was recorded by the Khunti automatic weather station (AWS) at 17 mm. Latehar AWS recorded 15 mm, Godda AWS 13.5 mm and Bano Simdega AWS recorded 11.5 mm of rainfall on Tuesday.
