Character Edge

Abhishek Banerjee has a knack for telling gritty, real-life stories with the ease of someone who may have lived to tell the tale. His performance as the ruthless, cold-blooded hitman Hathoda Tyagi in Pataal Lok Season 1 continues to be a talking point among viewers. He is back on screen in the edgy thriller Stolen, inspired by the horrific Karbi Anglong lynching event of 2018, in which two men were brutally killed after being falsely accused of child trafficking. The film, which marks the directorial debut of Karan Tejpal, had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2023. Two years after being screened at international film festivals, it has finally released on Prime Video. 'The film was pitched to me as a road action movie, which they wanted to shoot in a single take. I thought that was rather ambitious, since it is not an easy feat to pull off. But the story was very exciting. I like experimenting with genres and styles of filmmaking, which enriches me as an actor. People are always comparing the mediums of theatre and OTT, and for me, every film—everything you do—is a different medium, because the format is going to change. I just love jumping from medium to medium,' says Banerjee.

Campus rape reignites political debate

Kolkata: Yet another incident of rape, 10 months after the brutal rape and murder of a PGT doctor at RG Kar, reignited the war of words between Trinamool Congress and opposition parties on Friday. "This incident is not just a crime, it is a glaring proof of Trinamool Congress's student organisation netas tarnishing the sanctity of educational institutions. A college campus, a sacred place where students come to acquire knowledge, witnessing such brutality is shameful for our society. Trinamool's student netas have repeatedly misused their power to create an atmosphere of fear and anarchy in educational institutes," said BJP 's Suvendu Adhikari. CPM's Sujan Chakraborty, while leading a rally outside Kasba police station, took a dig at main accused Monojit Mishra's association with TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He said, "To make the campuses — from RG Kar to this law college — free of crime, they must be freed from grassroots influences. Illegal unions must be shut down. Student union polls need to be organised." "How can such incidents happen again and again?" asked Sougata Tarafdar, secretary of SFI district committee of Jadavpur University. "When such incidents happen, there is inevitably a sense of fear and apprehension among parents." A group of demonstrators even scaled the law college gate and tore down posters of CM Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee on the campus. Meanwhile, outside Kasba PS, Left supporters clashed with cops, forcing deployment of RAF. There was a massive traffic jam on Rasbehari Avenue connector from afternoon till evening because of the protests. A commuter stuck in traffic near Bijan Setu said, "We have been stuck for past 15-20 minutes. We were on our way to the hospital and are now stuck." Piya, who was travelling by bus to her officer near Gariahat, said, "I am very late for my work. I cannot simply sit and wait in the bus." Trinamool functionaries termed the incident "heinous" and said they were "pained". They also lauded the cop effort for arresting the culprits within 12 hours of the incident being reported. "We are standing with the survivor. There are no words to condemn such a heinous crime, but we want to tell her that those who committed this barbarity were arrested immediately. A probe is underway. We want the woman to receive justice. There will be a thorough probe and the culprits will receive the strictest punishment," said minister Sashi Panja. Urging the opposition not to do politics over such a tragic incident, Panja asked why the Aparajita Bill that got passed in the WB legislative assembly was yet to be approved by the Centre. "BJP wants to politicise such matters. If they are really serious about such heinous crimes, instead of resorting to theatrics on the streets, express your support for the Bill. Ask the President to pass it. A woman's body is not your political battlefield," she said.

BJP will be reduced to under 50 seats in Assembly polls: Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and the party's second-in-command, Abhishek Banerjee, on Wednesday claimed that the BJP-led government at the Centre would soon fall, and that the party would be reduced to below 50 seats in the 2026 state Assembly elections. Addressing a public meeting in his Diamond Harbour constituency, Abhishek said, 'It's only a matter of time before the BJP government at the Centre collapses. Mark my words — BJP will be reduced to under 50 seats in the coming Assembly polls in Bengal.' Responding to BJP's poll promise of providing Rs 3,000 to women if elected in Bengal, Banerjee said, 'Let them first provide at least Rs 1,500 in any of the BJP-ruled states. Didi's government is already giving Laxmi Bhandar support to 2.2 crore women in Bengal.' Additionally, the TMC MP also announced that his outreach programme 'Sebaashray' would be relaunched this year. 'I challenge the 500+ MPs across parties to replicate our 75-day Sebaashray model. We helped over 12 lakh people. No one left empty-handed,' Abhishek claimed. Highlighting his win with a record margin in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, during the Lok Sabha elections, 2024, Abhishek said,'BJP has moved court over my win. Instead, they should spend the next four years finding a strong candidate. I won by 7.1 lakh votes, and we'll push the margin beyond 8 lakh next time.' He also alleged that he received two income tax notices after facilitating old age pensions for 76,000 people in his constituency. 'BJP wants to stop this pension because I'm helping the poor. But we won't stop. By Durga Puja, we'll send letters to all 76,000 beneficiaries, exposing how BJP wants to take away what is rightfully theirs and divert it to Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh,' he said. While he thanked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for facilitating the construction of Jagannath temple in Digha, Abhishek said, 'BJP claims to be the protector of Hindus, yet its leaders like Sukanta and Suvendu ridicule Jagannath prabhu.' Abhishek Banerjee also vowed to continue highlighting what he called the 'real face of the Bangla Birodhi BJP' to every household in his constituency. He raised questions over the Pahalgam terror attack, in Jammu and Kashmir in April, slamming the Centre for not responding. 'For us, the country comes first. That is the difference between us and the BJP. I had asked how four terrorists crossed into India and killed 26 people. Till date, the man who called himself chowkidar has not responded. Where are those terrorists now? The way they killed 26 Indians, they should be given a similar reply,' he said. The Diamond Harbour MP accused the BJP of branding all critics as 'anti-national' and said, 'When we questioned Pulwama, they called us anti-national. When Sikh people wear turbans, they're labelled Khalistani. But I have visited abroad to present India's perspective. Who is anti-national now?' Referring to the RG Kar rape and murder case, Banerjee said, 'During the RG Kar case, BJP demanded the CM's resignation and that of the then Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Now, after the Pahalgam killings, why aren't they asking for Amit Shah's resignation? Why not the IB chief's?' Abhishek also criticised the BJP for what he called opportunistic politics. 'While an Indian delegation was abroad, raising the PoK issue, the Prime Minister came to Bengal to indulge in petty politics. That is the BJP's real face, their leaders are anti-Bengal.' As he lashed out at Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on infiltration, Abhishek said, 'Suvendu claims Bangladesh is better than Bengal. Shah accuses Didi of sheltering infiltrators. But have they forgotten that in Bangladesh, Hindus and saints are being tortured? Is this what they are endorsing?'
