(AP Photo/Charles Krupa) BOSTON (AP) — Wilyer Abreu hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning Wednesday afternoon and the Boston Red Sox beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 in the completion of a game suspended by rain a night earlier. Trevor Story added an RBI double after Abreu's hit, sending Boston to its third win in four games after a six-game losing skid, its longest since September 2022. Advertisement Spencer Steer hit a two-run homer for the Reds, who have dropped three of four. Brayan Bello (4-3) worked five innings of relief and Aroldis Chapman got the final three outs for his 15th save. With just a few thousand fans of the 32,355 paid attendance in Fenway Park, play resumed at 2:32 p.m. before Steer, the National League's reigning player of the week, hit an 0-1 cutter from Bello into the Green Monster seats to make it 3-2 in the fourth. The Red Sox won the opener of the three-game series Monday when Abreu became just the sixth player in major league history to hit an inside-the-park homer and grand slam in the same game. The previous was Roger Maris on August 3, 1958. Advertisement Tuesday's game was halted after three innings, delayed 1 hour, 20 minutes before it was suspended. It was the Reds' second suspended game this season. The second part of this game lasted 2 hours, 9 minutes. Key moment With a pinch runner Nate Eaton on third and two outs, Abreu blooped a single to right against Lyon Richardson (0-3). Story then doubled off the center field wall. Key stat The Red Sox are a win away from getting back to .500 (43-44) this season. Up next Reds RHP Nick Martinez (5-8, 4.12 ERA) is scheduled to pitch the regularly scheduled nightcap. Red Sox Eyeing Two Key Upgrades Ahead of Trade Deadline: Report
Red Sox Eyeing Two Key Upgrades Ahead of Trade Deadline: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After trading away superstar Rafael Devers, the Boston Red Sox trade deadline plans became unclear. Would they sell off the remainder of the expiring contracts and prepare to be a top spender during free agency? Or would Boston pivot and become an aggressive buyer to make a second-half playoff push? Now six games back in the AL East and half a game behind the final Wild Card spot, Boston's intentions are clear. Advertisement According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Red Sox are focusing on upgrading two positions: starting pitching and first base. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora prior to the game against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images 'They are in the bottom third of starting pitching, so they would like to get a starter. Potentially a veteran starter. Maybe [Jordan] Hicks and [Kyle] Harrison can help out, but I think they will look at starting pitching.' Entering the week, the Red Sox pitching staff ranks 16th as a whole, according to FanGraphs. Despite the middling ranking, Boston's ERA tells a different story. Through 78 games, the Red Sox's rotation has an accumulative 4.30 ERA – good enough for 23rd in baseball. Advertisement After a season-ending to Triston Casas and shipping Devers to San Francisco, the Red Sox have relied on a platoon at first base featuring Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez. While their performance has been admirable, Boston's first basemen rank 26th in baseball with a negative 0.7 WAR. The subpar results led Heyman to reveal Boston's pursuit of two potential trade targets. 'The other thing they are going to look at is first base. Now, Abraham Toro has done very well so far at first base, but he has not been considered a 'starting' first baseman. I'll throw out a couple of names there, potentially, for the Red Sox.' Heyman continued, 'One would be Josh Naylor. Again, the Diamondbacks are not expected to be a seller, but if they are, there would be a feeding frenzy for him. That's a guy they would consider. The other one is Ryan O'Hearn, who's now leading as the DH vote-getter in the American League now that Devers has been traded. There's going to be a big play for him.' Advertisement Now, with the front office's goals set, Boston is the team to keep an eye on as the trade deadline draws near. Red Sox manager Alex Cora ejected after another shaky start by Walker Buehler in loss to Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Alex Cora is 0 for 2 in arguing obstruction calls with umpire Alan Porter after the Boston Red Sox manager was ejected Monday night in the fifth inning of a 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, the second straight game in which Cora was tossed. Boston was trailing 5-4 when Jarren Duran doubled to lead off the fifth. Abraham Toro grounded to shortstop, but Duran hesitated before breaking for third and was tagged out in a rundown by Angels second baseman Christian Moore.

Red Sox base-running blunders lead manager Alex Cora to second straight ejection
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Red Sox manager Alex Cora was ejected for a second consecutive game on Monday night, both times for arguing that calls were missed on baserunning blunders by his offense. In the third inning of Boston's 9-5 loss to the Angels on Monday, Red Sox first baseman Abraham Toro grounded into an unconventional double play. Jarren Duran — on second base with no outs — bolted for third on Toro's ground ball to shortstop. Duran was thrown out in a run down. Toro broke for second base during the rundown, but was thrown out sliding into the bag. Cora argued that Angels infielder Luis Rengifo obstructed the base before the ball reached his glove. However, after the umpires huddled to discuss the play, they confirmed their initial ruling. Cora, incensed, was ejected seconds after exiting the dugout to argue. 'We felt that the runner, no matter what the fielder had done in that situation, the runner was out,' crew chief Alan Porter told a pool reporter after the game. 'He was out by a lot. And that's part of also not calling the obstruction.' Advertisement In February of 2024, MLB provided an updated guidance to all umpires, requesting they enforce the rule prohibiting infielders from blocking the base before receiving the ball. While Porter said that guidance was a factor in this determination, the rule was essentially moot, given how far Toro was from the bag at the time of any potential interference. Cora and this crew have some history. In September of last season, Cora was ejected by the same umpiring crew when the same rule was utilized to overturn a safe call at second base, while Boston was in the field. On that play, Red Sox infielder Vaughn Grissom was ruled to have impeded a base-runner on a pickoff attempt at second base. 'I was trying to make that point. It happened six months ago,' Cora said. 'Same situation. And it was reversed last year. Maybe he's right, he was going to be safe, but I wanted to make sure.' On Monday, Cora might light contact with Porter while arguing. The umpire said that would be in his report filed to the league office. Cora was also ejected on Sunday afternoon for arguing that Duran was safe at second, despite sliding off the base. Replay review determined that the call on the field stood, and Cora was ejected afterward. The Red Sox issued 13 free bases on Monday, including four to bring in runs. They also made four outs on the bases, and committed an error that led to the Angels' game-winning run in the eighth inning. (Photo; Ronald Martinez / Getty Images)

(AP Photo/Jeff Chiu) SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Heliot Ramos doubled home two runs to highlight San Francisco's decisive seventh inning after an earlier two-run single, and the Giants rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-5 on Sunday. Casey Schmitt and Mike Yastrzemski each hit solo home runs in the fifth against Red Sox starter Luis Giolito and Willy Adames connected in the eighth. Advertisement With Adames and Schmitt each aboard on hits to start the seventh, Tyler Fitzgerald bunted home the tying run to chase reliever Greg Weissert (2-2) and San Francisco went ahead when Red Sox second baseman Romy González missed a routine catch on Yastrzemski's liner off Justin Wilson. Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run homer in the fifth and González homered one out later for the Red Sox, then the Giants cleared the fences twice in the bottom half to tie the game at 4. Ceddanne Rafaela homered in the sixth for Boston. After the Red Sox went ahead in the first on a fielding error by Ramos in left field, he delivered with the single in the third. Giants lefty Robbie Ray struck out seven and walked one over five innings, allowing three earned runs and eight hits. Erik Miller (4-0) pitched the seventh for the win. Key moment Boston's Jarren Duran and manager Alex Cora were ejected in the eighth after Duran argued a tag call at second base that had been upheld on replay review. Duran singled to right and was out at second on a throw by Yastrzemski to shortstop Adames. Duran, visibly shown swearing, was tossed by second base umpire Doug Eddings as the outfielder walked toward the dugout. He then turned around and tried to approach Eddings before being held back. Cora rushed out to argue and also was ejected. Advertisement Key stat The Giants improved to a majors-best 15-2 in home day games. They have hit 44 home runs in afternoon contests this year.
