US delists HTS as terror organization
Shafaq News – Damascus/Washington On Monday, the United States removed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, the State Department announced on Monday, citing recent political developments in Syria. The department stated that, in consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury, "the group, previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra, was delisted under Section 219 of the US Immigration and Nationality Act." HTS, led by Syria's transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa (formerly Abu Mohammad al-Julani), had originally been designated a terrorist organization in December 2012 under its former name, though they later rebranded as HTS after "distancing" themselves from al-Qaeda in 2016 and consolidating control over parts of northwest Syria. The reversal follows HTS's December 2024 offensive that led to the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime and pledged political reforms, particularly in foreign policy, since al-Sharaa took office. Notably, US President Donald Trump lifted sanctions on Syria in May during a visit to Saudi Arabia, attributing the move to a direct request from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marking the first shift in US stance toward the new Syrian leadership under HTS.

New Delhi: A government has been formed in Syria under the leadership of Ahmed al-Sharaa alias Abu Mohammad al-Julani, a former Al-Qaeda terrorist. He is a former rebel commander who is currently serving as the president of Syria since January 2025. In fact, not only Julani, it is a 'great time' for terrorists in Syria. Reportedly, the Syrian government has even issued advertisements to recruit terrorists into its army. It states that any terrorist, regardless of the group they belong to, can apply if they want to join the Syrian Army. The government has also set a deadline for this. The big thing is that no strict laws have been enforced for these terrorists. 10-day ultimatum Syria's defense minister has told small armed groups to comply within 10 days, or they will face action. This is all being done to strengthen the government's grip on the country six months after Bashar al-Assad was removed from power. In fact, terrorist groups outside the control of the new government in Syria continue to challenge the authority of interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa. As a result, peace cannot be established in Syria, which they had aimed for. Not only that, but groups supporting Sharaa are also armed and attacking opponents. Syrian Defense minister's statement Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra said in a statement late Saturday, May 17 night that all 'military units' have now been integrated into a 'unified institutional framework.' He described this as a significant achievement. The military units refer to terrorist groups. He stated, 'We emphasize that the remaining small military groups must join the ministry within a maximum period of 10 days from the date of this announcement, in order to complete the efforts of integration and organization.' Exemptions This statement is not applicable to the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is a large Kurdish-led army in northeastern Syria that signed an agreement with Sharaa earlier this year, aimed at integration with state institutions. Last week, Syria received a significant diplomatic boost when US President Donald Trump met with rebel leader Sharaa and announced that sanctions on Syria would be lifted. Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab stated that this decision would support efforts to 'strengthen security and stability in Syria and the region and promote civic peace.'
