Leaders welcome deferment news
T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and opposition leader V D Satheesan welcomed the news that the execution of Nimisha Priya, the nurse from Kerala on death row in Yemen, was deferred. Both leaders described the development as a source of relief and hope. The CM said the deferment provides valuable time to explore legal and diplomatic options for securing Nimisha's release. He credited the intervention of Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar for playing a pivotal role in this breakthrough, describing it as the result of persistent efforts by compassionate individuals driven by humanity and brotherhood. He also congratulated Kanthapuram and the Action Council working for Nimisha's cause, expressing hope that their combined efforts would soon lead to complete success. "The decision to delay the execution is a result of sustained intervention and reflects the strength of collective goodwill," Vijayan said. Echoing similar sentiments, Satheesan said the latest development offers a sense of relief and renewed hope. He also lauded the efforts of Kanthapuram, noting that the dialogue initiated in Yemen through Sufi scholar Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, at Kanthapuram's suggestion, may pave the way for a positive outcome. "We will extend wholehearted support to everyone working for Nimisha Priya's release. Let us now wait in hope for the good news that her release will finally overcome all legal hurdles," Satheesan added.

'Comforting, Hopeful': CM Vijayan On Postponement Order Of Kerala Nurse's Execution In Yemen
Last Updated: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan called the postponement of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya's execution in Yemen "comforting and hopeful," praising Kanthapuram and the Action Council. Following the postponement of execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan termed the decision as 'comforting and hopeful ." Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also congratulated Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, an influential Sunni Muslim leader, and the action council over the latest development in the case. The Kerala CM said the news of the execution of Nimisha Priya, who was sentenced to death in Yemen, being postponed is 'comforting and hopeful." 'This has given Nimisha more time to get her sentence terminated. This decision was led to by the initiative and intervention of Kanthapuram AP Abubacker Musliyar, " the CM said in a statement. 'This decision is the result of the tireless efforts of good hearts full of humanity and brotherhood. I congratulate Kanthapuram and everyone including the Action Council who are working hard to get justice for Nimisha Priya," he added. The Chief Minister also said that he hopes that 'everyone's hopes and efforts will reach complete success as soon as possible." Earlier, the nurse was scheduled to be executed in Yemen on July 16. However, the fresh date for her execution was not immediately known. The government of India, which has, since the beginning of the case, been rendering all possible assistance in the matter, has made efforts in recent days to seek more time for the family of Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party. Hailing from Kerala's Palakkad district, Nimisha Priya is on the death row for the murder of Mahdi, her Yemeni business partner. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. Earlier in the day, news agency PTI quoted sources and stated that last-minute efforts to halt Nimisha Priya's execution were underway, under the leadership of a Sufi scholar there, at the behest of influential Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar. A meeting between representatives of prominent scholar and Sufi leader Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, and the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi – the Yemeni national allegedly killed by Nimisha Priya in 2017, was also expected to be held at Dhamar on Tuesday, it mentioned. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 17:43 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Nimisha Priya on death row: Pinarayi Vijayan writes to PM, husband meets Governor
Even as Centre told the Supreme Court there is nothing the Indian government can do as the matter of 'bloody money' pardon is a private matter, husband of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya who is set to be executed in Yemen on July 16, said he had met the Kerala Governor to secure her release. Tomy Thomas, Nimisha Priya's husband, was accompanied by Congress MP Chandy Oommen, who facilitated the meeting with Governor Rajendra Arlekar in Thiruvananthapuram and said he felt more confident after receiving the Governor's assurance of support. advertisementSpeaking to India Today TV, Thomas said: 'I met the Governor yesterday. Congress MLA Chandy Oommen took me to meet him. The Governor has taken the issue seriously. He has promised me that he will inform the central government about it. He has spoken to them. Chandy Oommen and his mother (former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's wife) also met the Governor. Nimisha's mother wanted to speak to him. So we called her on video and he asked her to stay strong. He has promised all help.' Thomas also confirmed that MPs from the CPI(M), John Brittas and K Radhakrishnan, have also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Minister of External Affairs, seeking urgent action to save Nimisha. 'Everybody is trying from their end. Everyone is negotiating in whatever way they can. I don't know how positive it is. We need strong interference from the central government. Action Council members, state government, central government – are all working hard. Action Council members are working in different sectors, still they are all running for this. I am sure all the hardwork will pay off,' he said, adding that he hadn't been speaking to people much even though they kept calling him. 'When I met the Governor, I felt more confident. I was planning to go to Delhi. Governor said he will arrange everything from here,' Thomas said there was no clear communication yet made to the Indian Action Council or the embassy about the family of the deceased accepting blood money. 'Work is being done by the embassy, our lawyer and Action Council members are taking risks to convince his family. I will speak on it once they give any information. Whatever the family says, we are ready to accept,' he also confirmed that he remains in regular contact with Nimisha, who keeps him updated on developments. 'Yes, I am in touch with her. I get to talk to her sometimes. She was the one who informed me about it. Then I informed others. That's how it usually is. She informs me whenever there is any update,' he Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, too, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 13, urging his intervention in the matter. 'I appeal to the Hon'ble Prime Minister to take up the matter and intervene with the authorities concerned to save the life of Nimisha Priya,' he wrote. In a post on X, Vijayan said, 'Wrote to Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji urging urgent intervention to secure the release of Nimisha Priya, who remains imprisoned in Yemen. The Government of Kerala stands firmly with all those working towards her exoneration and safe return.' advertisementMeanwhile, the central government informed the Supreme Court that it had few options to secure the release or prevent Nimisha's execution. Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre, said that paying 'blood money' was the only remaining option, which was a private matter in which the government cannot directly intervene. - Ends IN THIS STORY#Kerala
