Ghana races to settle $3.6m debt as scholarship students face eviction from US university

Ghana's government is facing mounting criticism following reports that nearly 200 Ghanaian students on scholarship at the University of Memphis in the United States may be displaced due to unpaid tuition fees totalling $3.6 million. Ghanaian government faces criticism for unpaid tuition fees amounting to $3.6 million for scholarship students in the US. Nearly 200 Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis may be displaced due to funding issues. The students, enrolled in STEM and business programs, risk losing campus accommodation by August 2025. University issues August 9 eviction deadline The 185 affected students, who are beneficiaries of a Ghana government scholarship programme, have been asked by the University to find alternative sources of funding or vacate their campus accommodation by 9 August 2025. The students are currently studying science, engineering, and business-related programmes. Dr Bill Hardgrave, President of the University of Memphis, confirmed the situation during an interview with Action News 5's Better Memphis show. 'The students are sponsored by the government from Ghana, which has not paid the students' tuition in some time,' he said. Dr Hardgrave revealed that the amount owed by the Ghanaian government totals $3.6 million, warning that the delay in payment could disrupt the students' education. Dr Hardgrave suggested that political changes in Ghana following the December 2024 general elections might have affected budgetary allocations for foreign scholarships. 'I think there was a regime change in Ghana and that affected the budget, but we're hopeful that gets corrected because we'd love to keep those students on campus,' he added. Students face academic disruption The students now face the grim reality of dropping out and returning to Ghana if urgent steps are not taken. The University of Memphis has reportedly informed them that unless payment is made, they must vacate their residence halls by the stated deadline. With only a few weeks left before the deadline, the educational futures of 185 Ghanaian students hang in the balance, awaiting swift intervention from the Ghanaian government or international benefactors. Without that lifeline, the consequences could be devastating for students who have come so far in pursuit of academic excellence abroad.

Steelers' Calvin Austin reveals what impresses Aaron Rodgers most about his abilities

Calvin Austin III is checking all the right boxes heading into Year 4 — and that includes a good first impression with new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers. In a one-on-one interview with Action News 5 Sports Director Doc Holliday, Austin revealed a few aspects of his game that caught Rodgers' eye: 'The first time I met [Aaron Rodgers], one of the first things he said was about my speed,' Austin said. 'Obviously, that's my main thing. It's something that got me to the point I'm at today. But one of the other things he was talking about was me going over the middle to make those tough catches. And that was something that I just really worked on last year and wanted to show — that I'm not just a straight down-the-field speed guy. Tough third downs, across the middle, I'm the guy that can make those catches and show up in those big, crucial moments.' Rodgers recently built chemistry with a group of Steelers pass catchers in Malibu this summer, including Austin, DK Metcalf, Roman Wilson, Ben Skowronek, Scotty Miller, and Pat Freiermuth. Many have predicted a 2025 breakout year for Austin, who produced 548 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 36 receptions last season in the Russell Wilson–Justin Fields QB experiment. Steelers wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni also expressed belief in Austin's Year 4 jump — confidently stating the lightning-fast receiver holds the pole position for WR2. If there's any quarterback who can get the most out of Austin, it's Rodgers — a four-time MVP and 20-year veteran, who's gearing up for what looks like his final season in 2025. 6 People, Including Child and Single Mother, Hit by Train en Route to Family Funeral: ‘When It Rains, It Pours'

A family in Tennessee was on their way to mourn when yet another tragedy struck. Katelynn Gooden and five of her family members were on their way to her grandmother's funeral in Bartlett, Tenn., on Thursday, April 17, when they were hit by a train, according to FOX 13 Memphis, Action News 5 and a GoFundMe fundraiser created by a friend of the family. Kevin Quinn, a local alderman, said that the family was in a limousine en route to the ceremony when a train collided with the vehicle at Stage Road and Sycamore View, FOX 13 reported. The limo crashed into a tree near the railroad and sustained 'heavy damage' on its passenger side, the outlet reported, adding that reporters observed no crossing gates at the intersection. All six members of the family, including a child, were hospitalized with injuries, and two other vehicles were impacted in the accident, per FOX 13 and Action News 5. The collision also shut down the site of the crash — a major intersection in Bartlett — for hours, the outlets reported. The City of Bartlett Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. A fundraiser was created to raise money for one passenger in particular, Gooden, as she heals from her injuries. Gooden, a single mother to a 3-year-old daughter, sustained a 'severe fracture that is causing her to be unable to walk' and will require her to be out of work for at least three months, per the GoFundMe — which, as of Sunday, April 20, has raised $4,850 of its $5,500 goal. "Everyone is expected to recover,' one relative told Action News 5, adding that they are 'thankful everyone is fine.' Meanwhile, another family member underscored the shocking nature of the incident, as well as its tragic timing. Aisha Shabree, identified simply as a relative, told FOX 13 that the extended family was waiting at a funeral home for the limo carrying the grandchildren and children of the deceased to arrive when they learned of the collision. "One of my aunties pulled up,' she recalled to FOX 13, 'and she was like, 'When it rains it pours.' I was like, 'What?' 'The family car just got hit by a train.' ' 'Then, of course, shock,' added Shabree. 'Like, what?' According to another Memphis outlet, WREG, the limo collided with a CSX train, and the transport company is now investigating the incident. Despite the lack of crossing gates, the City of Bartlett assures that the intersection is safe, the outlet reported. CSX did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Man Arrested For Alleged Connection To Young Dolph's Murder Walks Free After 'Clerical' Error

A Young Dolph murder suspect has been released after he was mistakenly linked to the rapper's demise. According to Action News 5, the suspect named Shundale Barnett was recently arrested on Monday (Jan. 27) and charged with two crimes, including theft of property in connection to Dolph's November 2021 death. Justin Johnson, the man found guilty in 2024 of killing the Memphis rapper and was sentenced to life, was discovered to be the cousin of Barnett. In uncovering this information, law enforcement tracked Barnett to Indiana at the time of his detainment and was charged with accessory after the fact and attempted first-degree murder in the case. However, authorities concluded that Barnett was not involved in the case and that the charges against the man should have been dropped. The Shelby County District Attorney released a statement regarding the mistake, addressing their decision to let Barnett go. 'During the investigation of Justin Johnson, Shundale Barnett was found with [Justin] Johnson at the time of his arrest in Indiana,' the statement read. 'Based on this and other facts, a task force officer with the U.S. Marshals determined there was probable cause to charge Barnett with Accessory After the Fact, and an arrest warrant was issued as part of standard procedure. 'As the investigation progressed, the DA's Office determined that Barnett was not involved in the case and chose not to pursue charges, indicating the charge would be withdrawn. However, a delay in recalling the warrant left it active in the system. This clerical issue has now been resolved, and the charges against Barnett have been officially dismissed.' It should be noted that Hernandez Govan, the alleged mastermind behind Dolph's demise, is set to head to trial this summer.
