‘How did snatched black mobile turn blue?': Chandigarh court lets off 3
The court of additional sessions judge, Rajnish Garg, has acquitted three individuals booked by UT Police in a mobile snatching case, citing significant inconsistencies in the prosecution's evidence. The Chandigarh court noted that the prosecution failed to prove both the recovery of the stolen mobile phone and the identity of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. (HT photo for representation) The case dates back to April, 2023, when complainant Kamalpreet Kaur, a resident of Phase-1, Mohali reported that her mobile was snatched on the night of April 7-8, 2023, in Sector-37, Chandigarh. She stated that three boys on a Punjab-registered Activa snatched her black VIVO mobile. Sector-39 police had booked Abhishek from Jujhar Nagar, Mohali, and Deepak and Vishal from Daddu Majra Colony, Sector-38. An FIR under IPC Sections 379-A, 34, and 411 was registered on April 10, 2023. SI Jagtar Singh was the investigating officer (IO). The accused were allegedly arrested during a police naka, with the snatched mobile phone being recovered. The court questioned the blue colour of the recovered mobile phone, as the complainant had stated in her complaint that her snatched VIVO mobile was of black colour. The prosecution presented five witnesses, while the accused pleaded innocence, claiming false implication and no recovery from them. The court highlighted an unexplained three-day delay in FIR registration. The incident occurred on April 7, but the complaint was officially moved on April 10. The complainant testified her statement was recorded on the spot on April 7, raising concerns about the suppression of the occurrence's origin. Further inconsistencies arose regarding the timeline of arrests. The court noted that the accused were apprehended and recovery was made within an hour of FIR registration, as per the IO. This suggested the possibility that the accused might have already been in police custody before the case was officially registered, implying the current case could have been 'planted'. The prosecution also failed to prove the accused's identity beyond a reasonable doubt. Although the complainant initially claimed she could identify the accused and provided the Activa scooter number, she couldn't recall it in the court. This discrepancy, coupled with the timing of apprehension, suggested police might have provided the scooter details to the complainant. The complainant's testimony on apprehension was inconsistent; she initially claimed her presence during arrest but later stated that the police showed her the accused at the station on an unknown date. Most critically, the prosecution failed to prove the recovery of the snatched mobile phone. Despite claims, the seizure memo listed the mobile as recovered from Vishal, while the IO and complainant testified it was from Deepak, a significant contradiction. Moreover, the recovered phone was blue, contradicting the complainant's statement and repair bill which stated her phone was black. The prosecution also couldn't establish the complainant's ownership of the recovered phone. The court concluded that the prosecution failed to prove both the recovery of the stolen mobile phone and the identity of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt.

Fined for his own stolen bike: 15 days on, owner waits, cops yet to act
Chandigarh: A city resident received a traffic challan for not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle he had reported stolen a day earlier. Even though he submitted video evidence of two men riding the stolen bike, the police have made no arrests. It's been over 15 days since the incident. The complainant, Iqbal Singh, a resident of Sector 56 and an employee at a private bank in Sector 29, reported that his Honda Livo motorcycle was stolen on the night of July 5. He had parked the bike outside his house along with other vehicles. The next morning, he discovered it missing. Upon reviewing CCTV footage from the area, Singh found that two auto-lifters arrived on an Activa scooter around 1:19 am and stole his bike using duplicate keys. He lodged an FIR at Sector 39 police station and submitted the footage to assist in the investigation. On July 6, Singh received a traffic challan from Mohali police for helmetless riding, issued against his stolen motorcycle. He later obtained additional CCTV footage from Kharar, showing two individuals riding his bike without helmets. This footage was also submitted to Sector 39 police. Despite having visual evidence from both Mohali and Kharar, the suspects remain at large, and the stolen motorcycle has not been recovered. Singh expressed disappointment over the lack of action, stating that the police could have easily traced the culprits if they had shown seriousness in the case. Police officials, however, claimed that the faces of the suspects are not clearly visible in either video, making identification difficult.

"I Lost My iPhone, Someone Could Have Lost Life": Man Seen Sobbing In Jaipur Viral Video
Jaipur: It's a video that has gone viral on social media - a young man lost his iPhone after his two-wheeler hit a pothole on a waterlogged street in Jaipur and skidded. The man is seen looking for the phone desperately in the water and then sobbing uncontrollably. For Bonnie Haldar, however, the newfound fame doesn't matter; the problems caused by the loss of the phone do. He had saved up to buy the iPhone on instalments to help expand the costume jewellery business he and his father run in Jaipur's Chameli Market area. From putting costume jewellery photos online to carrying out billing and creating a database of clients, Mr Haldar said the new phone helped him immensely in his business. Mr Haldar had bought the phone on 24 instalments of Rs 3,000 per month and he would have paid off the loan in just two more months. He gave up on finding the phone after looking for two hours, putting his hands in the water and desperately hoping that he would pull it up each time he tried. It turned up, coincidentally, when he was helping someone else, but it was damaged beyond repair. "I took it to a phone repair shop. Just see how damaged it is. There is no hope, and I don't think I can afford to buy another phone now," Mr Haldar told NDTV at Ramniwas Bagh, where he had lost the phone. He said he was returning to his father's costume jewellery unit at Mirza Ismail Road when the accident happened. Saw Many Skidding, Falling With a new parking lot constructed opposite Ramniwas Bagh theatre, the drains have been clogged and the road has been waterlogged. Little did Mr Haldar know when he took his Activa through the waterlogged road that he would drive right into a massive pothole, the size of a crater, right in the middle of the street. The two-wheeler skidded and he almost fell into the water. When he regained his balance, he realised that his iPhone had fallen out. — NDTV India (@ndtvindia) July 10, 2025 "As I sat here," he said, "I saw many people almost skidding or falling, or their cars getting stuck due to that huge crater in the middle of the road. I am glad the government has repaired it. I only lost my phone, someone could have lost their life." Mr Haldar recalled seeing a car with an elderly driver getting stuck in the same pothole. He got into the car to help the driver when he suddenly saw his phone floating by and reached out and grabbed it. Many people have offered to help Mr Haldar online by buying a cellphone for him, but since he cannot access his phone, he says he hasn't been able to accept. "Sometimes there is hope in the world, and sometimes you feel overwhelmed," he said with a smile. 'I Got Stuck Too' Jaipur is a UNESCO World Heritage City, but waterlogging has been a major problem, exacerbated by the fact that it has rained much more than normal this year. Local resident Jaideep Sharma, who saw the NDTV team speaking to Haldar, stopped to tell us about what he went through at the exact same spot. "This is where I got stuck too, in this big pothole. The axle of my car was damaged and the alignment went awry. It took me a long time to get the car out of the flooded road. The government should immediately take action and repair potholes." After Bonnie Haldar's video went viral, the pothole has been filled with gravel and sand, and some sandbags have been used to line the road so that water from the parking lot and ground does not flow onto it and cause waterlogging. The bigger problem, though, needs to be addressed. The Urban Development Department had come up with a Rs 400-crore plan to renovate the city's drainage system, but budget constraints came in the way of its implementation.
