5 Used Luxury Cars That Are a Good Investment for Retirees

A used luxury car can give retirees the chance to drive a high-quality vehicle and enjoy its premium features without paying the brand-new price tag. Discover More: Read Next: 'Cars depreciate most rapidly when they're new. It's not uncommon for a new car to depreciate by 50% over the first five years,' said Melanie Musson, auto industry expert with 'If you can find a vehicle that is four or five years old, you can take advantage of a vehicle that has already gone through the bulk of its depreciation. You'll pay less, and your car will lose value more slowly.' According to experts, here are five used luxury cars that are a good investment for retirees. Cadillac CT5 'The CT5 is one of the most reliable vehicles, so when you invest in one, you shouldn't have to worry about frequent, expensive repairs,' Musson explained. The vehicle also comes with a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. If something should happen to the engine, transmission or powertrain during that time, Cadillac will take care of it, she added. 'The CT5 delivers a smooth ride that's hard to beat,' Musson wrote. 'It is equipped with excellent safety features that will help drivers avoid accidents and stay safe if an accident occurs.' For You: Lexus RX 350 The Lexus RX 350 is best known for its comfort, reliability and premium interior. It also has lower maintenance costs than similar luxury vehicles. 'Lexus vehicles, especially the RX models, tend to hold their value well, and have lower maintenance costs compared to other luxury brands,' explained Joe Giranda, a car expert and director of sales and marketing at CFR Classic. 'Plus, they come with advanced safety features, making it a great option for retirees who prioritize comfort and peace of mind.' Mercedes-Benz E-Class The Mercedes-Benz E-Class combines high-tech features with luxury. In addition, if you buy certified pre-owned, it comes with warranty coverage, according to Giranda. 'Used models, particularly those from recent years, are packed with comfort features and advanced technology,' Giranda pointed out. 'Mercedes-Benz vehicles are engineered for longevity, and when properly maintained, they can offer years of reliable service.' Lexus LS 400 If you want a full-size luxury sedan, then the Lexus LS 400 is a must. The 400 offers ergonomic seating and an intuitive infotainment system. 'The 400 is an excellent investment for retirees,' Musson stated. 'If you can afford to be comfortable in your retirement, you should prioritize your driving experience.' It's also one of the most reliable. According to Musson, the 400 often reaches 300,000 miles of dependable service. Acura MDX The Acura MDX, a mid-size crossover SUV, is a solid investment for retirees. Musson noted that the MDX is a good investment for retirees, and most owners love their MDX and would recommend it to others. 'It's a good size for seniors and is one of the more easy cars to climb into and out of,' she added. 'The roomy interior is comfortable for the driver and passengers. It's a great car for road-tripping and hanging out with friends or grandchildren.' Popular brand to recall nearly 200,000 vehicles over 'trapped' fears

A popular car manufacturer is urging drivers to take their vehicle to back to the dealership to fix an issue that could otherwise result in passengers getting 'trapped' inside the car Thousands of passengers risk being 'trapped' in their car due to a common fault, experts have warned. Some of the world's most popular car brands including Honda, Ford, and Mercedes recently announced the recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to a range of serious safety concerns. All of the recalls have been issued in the United States, collectively affecting more than 850,000 vehicles in total, with a variety of mechanical and electronic issues identified that increase the likelihood of crashes and other hazardous situations — but only if they remain on the road without being repaired. ‌ It is always of the utmost importance to address potential safety defects in vehicles promptly to protect not just yourself, but everyone on the road. If you're concerned your car may be impacted, it's best to contact your local dealership. ‌ Honda The American Honda Motor Company is recalling around 260,000 vehicles in the States due to concerns that a brake pedal could shift out of position, which would prevent the driver from being able to apply the brakes. If this were to happen, the vehicles would fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards related to lighting and brake systems. The recall affects certain Acura TLX (2021-2025), Acura MDX (2023-2025) and Honda Pilot (2023-2025) models. Honda plans to notify owners by mail around July 28, 2025, with instructions on how to have their vehicles inspected and repaired as needed. Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz has also issued a significant recall, affecting almost 92,000 vehicles. The issue centres on the C-pillar, which may not absorb enough impact in the event of a crash. In the event of an accident, the rear occupant's head could come into contact with the C-pillar, potentially causing catastrophic harm. The recall covers certain 2023-2025 GLC 300, GLC 300 4MATIC, 2024-2025 AMG GLC 43 4MATIC, 2025 GLC 350E 4MATIC and AMG GLC 63 S E vehicles equipped with a panoramic sunroof. Mercedes-Benz has instructed dealers to modify the roof lining of affected vehicles to address the problem. ‌ Ford Ford has registered documents with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicating that over 500,000 of its vehicles are being recalled for various issues. The largest of these recalls involves certain Aviator and Explorer models manufactured between 2020 and 2025, with 304,662 units affected. The main concern is that the second-row seats in these vehicles could move unexpectedly, which may prevent them from properly restraining occupants during a crash. This could significantly increase the risk of injury. Ford dealers will inspect the second-row seat switch and, if necessary, replace the bezel around the switch. ‌ Another major issue for Ford involves nearly 200,000 Mustang Mach E vehicles produced between 2021 and 2025. If these vehicles have a low battery charge, the electronic door latches may remain locked after the driver or front passenger exits and shuts the door. This could result in a situation where a person in the back seat is unable to use the inside door release handles to exit the vehicle. The NHTSA warned that this defect could 'possibly trap someone who is unable to use the inside door release handles, such as a child in the back seat'. Ford has therefore advised owners to bring their vehicles to dealerships, where the necessary software updates will be provided free of charge. Notification letters were scheduled to be sent to owners by June 23, 2025, with a follow-up letter planned when the fix becomes available, which is expected by September 29. Although Ford has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this problem, the company has provided guidance for drivers to recognise warning signs. These include a 'system off to save power' alert or a blank SYNC screen after turning off the vehicle. In these cases, drivers may need to pull the inside release handles more forcefully than usual to exit through the front door. These recalls highlight ongoing safety concerns in the automotive industry and the importance of prompt action by manufacturers to address potential risks to drivers and passengers. All repairs related to these recalls will be carried out free of charge.

Honda recalls 259K vehicles for brake pedal defect

This story was originally published on Automotive Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Automotive Dive newsletter. American Honda Motor Co. has recalled 259,000 vehicles for a condition that may cause the brake pedal to become misaligned, which increases the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall is due to a manufacturing defect with the brake pedal pivot pin and includes the 2023-2025 Honda Pilot and Acura MDX; and 2021-2025 Acura TLX sedan. Dealers will inspect and replace the brake pedal assembly on the vehicles as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 28. According to the NHTSA, a Tier 1 supplier's manufacturing error resulted in some brake pedal pivot pins not being staked before assembly. The error can cause the pedal to move laterally, leading to unintended application by a driver and increase the risk of a crash. Honda's Tier 1 supplier, Otsuka Koki Co., was in the midst of a production transition from the U.S. to a Mexico facility between June 14 and Oct. 25, 2024. The planned move required the company to increase its staffing levels to mitigate any supply disruptions. However, some of these new employees were insufficiently trained and the pivot pin staking process was not performed, according to the report. These defective parts were then supplied to Honda and installed in the recalled vehicles. All of the improper brake pedal pivot pin staking occurred at the supplier's U.S. plant, which has since closed. Production was fully transferred to Mexico in early November 2024. In addition to the manufacturing error, a malfunction with the supplier's QR code scanning system that's designed to prevent process omissions was disabled, which allowed the problem to go undetected. But after it was discovered, Otsuka Koki Co. began to utilize a camera sensor to verify that the pivot pin is staked. Honda was made aware of the problem on April 4, 2024, after it received a report of brake pedal movement on a vehicle. The automaker subsequently launched an investigation to determine the cause. On Dec. 2, 2024, the automaker received a second report of a vehicle experiencing brake pedal movement. After receiving the second report, Honda in February began to inspect the parts inventory produced by its supplier. Through April of this year, Otsuka Koki Co. also investigated and analyzed the issue to determine the number of defective parts it may have supplied to the automaker. On June 5, Honda determined that the problem resulted in noncompliance of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and elected to conduct the recall. As of June 5, Honda is aware of three warranty claims related to brake pedal movement, but is not aware of any injuries. The recall is Honda's 12th since Jan. 1 and its second largest of 2025. In January, the company recalled over 294,000 vehicles to update engine control unit software that may lead to stalling or a sudden loss of power. 2025 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid is a big Swedish box of sustainability and comfort

I'm sharing my impressions of vehicles after living with them for a few days or as a make or model evolves. The car this week is the 2025 Volvo XC90 AWD T8. It's a plug-in hybrid version of Volvo's six- or seven-seat three-row luxury SUV. Volvo calls it a 2025.5 model, but U.S. regulations, which govern model years, don't recognize half-model years. (Sorry, Mustang fans; there wasn't a 1964.5 either.) I tested an $80,700 XC90 T8 AWD Ultra. Prices start at $57,400. Prices exclude $1,295 destination charge and import tariffs. The XC90 is one of Volvo's core vehicles. It sold 39,492 in 2024 and 39,920 in 2023. The updated 2025 went on sale in December. Volvo has sold 16.744 XC90s so far in 2025. U.S. tariffs may affect XC90 prices and availability. Typical Volvo style and safety. Quiet ride, smooth power. B5 Core: $57,400 B6 Core: $62,300 T8 Core: $71,900 XC90 T8 AWD Ultra: $80,700 Source: Edmunds. All prices exclude $1,295 destination charge and import tariffs. Room, comfort and sustainability. Volvo says owners worldwide average 48% of their miles driven on electric power. The 2.0L turbocharged engine and electric motor deliver 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque. The interior is roomy, attractive and safe ― Volvo hallmarks. The interior is quiet at highway speeds and the air suspension delivers a smooth ride and commendable handling for a big heavy vehicle. There's no change to the updated XC90's range on electric power. The XC90's price puts it in competition with new EVs like the Cadillac Vistiq and Hyundai Ioniq 9 — improved range wouldn't hurt. The lack of wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto goes in the same file: It wasn't a big deal in 2015 but constitutes a significant competitive failing today. Honda recalls more than 259,000 cars across the US due to brake pedal issue

NEW YORK -- Honda is recalling more than 259,000 of its cars across the U.S. due to a problem that can cause the brake pedal to shift out of position, potentially interfering with a driver's ability to stop or slow down. According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers certain Honda Pilots between model years 2023 and 2025 — as well cars under the auto maker's luxury Acura brand: 2021-2025 Acura TLX and 2023-2025 Acura MDX vehicles. The NHTSA's recall report notes that the brake pedal pivot pin in some of these vehicles was not secured properly during production. That can lead the pedal to shift out of place and 'may lead to unintended application,' the report notes, increasing crash risks. 'The issue could also cause an abnormal brake pedal feeling during operation, illuminate the brake malfunction light in the instrument cluster, or cause the vehicle's brake lights to remain lit even when the brake pedal is not applied,' America Honda said in a statement Wednesday. As a remedy, Honda says authorized dealers will inspect the vehicles covered by this recall and replace the brake pedal assembly if necessary, free of charge. Per the NHTSA's report, the company estimates 1% of these vehicles have this issue. Dealer notifications began on June 13. And mailed owner notification letters are set to follow on July 28. In the meantime, drivers can also confirm if their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using the NHTSA site or Honda's recall lookup. Between February 2024 and June 5, the NHSTA notes, Honda received three warranty claims related to this issue — but no reports of injuries. Honda began investigating the faulty brake pedal in April 2024, after receiving a report of a vehicle experiencing this issue. The company later determined that improper assembly of the brake pedal pivot pin occurred at a supplier's U.S. plant, which has since been closed. Production was transferred to a plant in Mexico — where the supplier now uses a camera sensor 'to verify whether the pivot pin is staked," the recall report notes.
