What is one word to describe the Commanders' offseason?
Adam Peters and Dan Quinn came in during the 2024 offseason and completely shook up the Washington Commanders' locker room. They added veterans, let some players go, drafted Jayden Daniels, and then took the team to the NFC Championship. It was an unexpected outcome for everyone except for, perhaps, Peters himself. Still, the NFC Championship game isn't the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is the Super Bowl, and the Commanders didn't make it there last year. That means there's still work to be done, and Peters didn't waste time during the offseason making adjustments to the roster. Advertisement Fox Sports recently gave each team's offseason a one-word description, and for the Commanders, their word is 'Upside.' Jayden Daniels is on a superstar trajectory after one of the best rookie quarterback seasons in league history. The Commanders have been savvy about building around him (and his cheap contract) too, trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Washington also added a first-round offensive tackle in Josh Conerly Jr. and re-signed tight end Zach Ertz. This is a team set to compete for Super Bowls for many years to come. As indicated above, Peters has done well to put the pieces around Jayden Daniels that will best support him in 2025. Adjustments and additions to the offensive line. Additions to the wide receivers' room. Retention of key players from 2024. Daniels is absolutely set up for success in 2025. But we have to remember that there are two sides of the ball. The defensive additions seem to be pointing in the 'upside' direction too, though, with rookie Trey Amos joining Mike Sainristil and Marshon Lattimore set to help out in the secondary and bolstering the defensive line with Deatrich Wise and Javon Kinlaw. So, 'Upside' is an accurate one-word description for the Commanders' offseason activity. It's already been said that their offseason activity ranks among the top in the league, and more outlets are coming to the same conclusion. The Commanders are a force to be reckoned with, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Analytics project NFC East win totals for Commanders and others
How many games will the Washington Commanders win in 2025? Last season, Washington shocked the world, going 12-5 and reaching the NFC championship game. It was the franchise's best season in 33 years and one year removed from a four-win season. The Philadelphia Eagles ended the Commanders' dream season in the NFC title game before defeating the Kansas City Chiefs for their second Super Bowl championship. Advertisement Washington spent the offseason trying to catch Philadelphia, which lost some talented defenders in free agency. However, in true Philly fashion, general manager Howie Roseman went defense-heavy in the 2025 NFL draft, using his first five picks on defensive players. Meanwhile, Commanders' general manager Adam Peters was aggressive this offseason with star quarterback Jayden Daniels entering the second year of his rookie contract. Peters traded for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Did Washington do enough to catch Philadelphia? Cynthia Frelund, an analytics expert for doesn't believe so, using her model to project the number of wins for all four NFC East teams in 2025. Frelund on Washington: Advertisement "The Washington Commanders are projected to win 10.2 games and secure an NFC Wild Card after their breakout 2024 season with new head coach Dan Quinn and Offensive Rookie of the Year, quarterback Jayden Daniels," Frelund said. "Washington scored more than nine points per game last season compared to 2023. Daniels elevated everyone around him and was able to extend plays with his legs. General manager Adam Peters went all-in on building around his young quarterback, trading for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil, and drafting another tackle, Josh Conerly Jr., in the first round. Assuming the Commanders can better protect Jayden Daniels in 2025: Watch out." This is encouraging for the Commanders. While 10 wins is less than last season, the Eagles won 14 games during the regular season in 2024. Quinn would settle for a Week 18 matchup against Philadelphia to determine the NFC East champion, even if it meant winning one or two fewer games in 2025. Some analysts are more encouraged by the Cowboys than Frelund. Meanwhile, everyone agrees that the Giants are No. 4. Commanders Fans Wonder Why ‘Final' Offseason Move Isn't Done
Commanders Fans Wonder Why 'Final' Offseason Move Isn't Done originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders, since Dan Quinn and Adam Peters took over at the start of last offseason, have had nothing but positive vibes and things going smoothly. Advertisement This offseason, that has been shattered, as Terry McLaurin has been seeking a new contract and, as of now, has yet to receive it. And he's reportedly not thrilled. After already holding out of mandatory minicamp, many wonder if "Scary Terry" will do the same when training camp rolls around next month, and in truth, fans hope that the contract situation is fixed by then. If it isn't, things might get sticky. … and it's all leaving fans wondering why it's not done. For ESPN's Aaron Schatz, Washington's final offseason move is an easy one: extend its star receiver. "McLaurin has been one of the league's best receivers for years, but he never reached his highest potential because of poor quarterback play prior to 2024," Schatz writes. "That's not a problem now with Jayden Daniels in town, and McLaurin ranked fifth in DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement) last season. Advertisement "However, McLaurin's current contract voids after the 2025 season, and the Commanders need to fix that. He skipped a recent mandatory minicamp in hopes that it would prod the Commanders into coming closer to the number he wants on the next contract." Jan 26, 2025; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin (17) reacts after a play against the Philadelphia Eagles during the first half in the NFC Championship game at Lincoln Financial Streicher-Imagn Images With Terry expected to fetch a contract that will at least start at $30 million per annum, it is unclear whether the Commanders are willing to invest that sort of money. However, given their approach this offseason with the trades for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil, that is the definition of all-in. So, why would the franchise not keep its best offensive player, not named Jayden Daniels? Advertisement It is confusing, but this is the NFL landscape, and there aren't many who don't think Terry and Washington won't agree on a new deal. But the longer it goes, the more skeptical and confused we become. Commanders Trade for Trey Hendrickson Idea Gets Final Pre-Camp Update
Commanders Trade for Trey Hendrickson Idea Gets Final Pre-Camp Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders are the No. 1 team when it comes to rumors about a trade for unhappy Cincinnati Bengals star defensive end Trey Hendrickson, and there are two logical reasons for that. Advertisement One, the Commanders can swoop in because they have the salary cap room. And two, the Commanders should swoop in because as talented as this roster is, they have the vacancy. Hendrickson has asked for a contract extension since the start of the offseason. He is currently slated for an over $18 million cap hit in the final year of his there is market-based logic now that makes it clear he can ask for $30 million per year or maybe even more. He was initially encouraged to seek out a trade. That didn't work. He's been involved in extension talks. That hasn't worked, either. So then came a major turn: Teams have called; we bet that group includes Washington and GM Adam Peters. The Bengals have been steadfast in stating that they want first-round value for the veteran if they do deal him. Advertisement And a sidebar: ESPN is suggesting a trade that would cost Washington nothing more than two Day 3 draft picks and young D-lineman Jer'Zhan Newton. Really? That's it? Nonsense. If that was the proposal on the table, Hendrickson would be in D. C. today. Instead, he is reportedly working out in Ohio, which has Cincy fans excited at the thought that maybe Cincinnati management folds and pays the guy who gets a rather amazing 17.5 sacks per year. Meanwhile, a breaking news update on the Washington position here. Yes, Washington is shy on picks; it can only offer so much as a result of the Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel trades. But Washington isn't shy about being aggressive in talent yet a report from The Athletic suggests that Washington plans on evaluating their in-house pass rushers before adding any outside talent. Advertisement All in all, this feels like a major "tap the brakes'' moment in a much-rumored connection. Commanders Trade Rumor Suggests Terry McLaurin for First-Round Pick in 'Redefining' Move
Commanders Trade Rumor Suggests Terry McLaurin for First-Round Pick in 'Redefining' Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If the Washington Commanders see little true light at the end of the 2025 tunnel? Yup. They should trade Terry McLaurin. He turns 30 in September. He wants too much money. And maybe he's closer to "very good'' than "great.'' Advertisement But given the fact that they have rapidly built around quarterback Jayden Daniels With GM Adam Peters opting to spend big in deals to bring in tackle Laremy Tunsil and receiver Deebo Samuel? And given the fact the before they got here this team was a win away from the Super Bowl in 2024? Why would anybody see anything but big, beautiful bright lines up ahead? As receiver McLaurin's contract negotiations continue to stall, some have grown worried about his potential departure. Speculation has run rampant among national websites, all of them wanting to push McLaurin out of Washington in exchange for ... whatever. Advertisement Send McLaurin to the Los Angeles Chargers, to the Pittsburgh Steelers, to the New England Patriots ... hey, pick one of the other 31 teams and you can find a story that "links'' McLaurin to that team. A new "rumor''? Maybe Washington can get a first-round pick back for McLaurin. The truth? A trade of this player - barring a holdout that becomes so nasty that both sickened sides want a divorce - would redefine the Commanders' offseason. ... and not in a good way. Whether a first-round pick is fair trade compensation isn't even the central argument here. The crux of it all is about how much five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons is worth ... with the assumption that more are coming. Advertisement McLaurin has earned the right to be paid like a top receiver; that language means around $30 million per year. We've seen another "report'' that suggests McLaurin is demanding $37 million per year. We don't believe that number, and we cannot justify that number. But if the Commanders want to compete for a Super Bowl now? They find the right figure. And as that is indeed what the Commanders want? Most of the "31 Flavors'' trade predictions are hot air.
