Therme unveils new designs for Ontario Place waterpark and spa
Therme Canada has released its updated design for the landmark waterpark and wellness facility at Ontario Place. The project integrates 16 acres of publicly accessible parkland, walking trails, beaches, cultural gathering areas and nature play zones along Toronto's western waterfront — all free and open year-round. At the heart of the controversial project is Therme's waterpark and wellness centre, which includes 20 water slides, thermal bathing, social saunas, 10 pools and relaxation areas inspired by global spa traditions, the European company said in a statement marking the release of the new design. As part of Tuesday's announcement, it was noted that the updated design for the facility is significantly smaller than was previously proposed. The overall building footprint will be 32,600 square metres, reduced by 14 per cent. The building heights for the two structures noted in the update will sit at 43.5 metres and 22.0 metres, reduced by six per cent and 22 per cent. The plans were developed by Toronto-based architecture firm Diamond Schmitt and Therme ARC , in collaboration with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, STUDIO tla and Trophic Design. The site will also pay tribute to the original Ontario Place with a focus on families and inclusion by offering an area dedicated to family fun including waterslides, wave pools and multiple food and beverage offerings — all set amongst botanical gardens, the statement added. While enjoying the public park will be free, access to the waterpark and wellness facility will cost about $40 for a day pass, Adam Vaughan , senior advisor at Therme Canada, said, according to a report on Toronto Today . 'This notion that it's a luxury, elitist spot — we're not generating the numbers that we're talking about if we're only serving affluent parts of the population. This is — this is fun,' he continued. Therme Canada estimates the Ontario Place facility will welcome 2.5 million visitors annually.

Liverpool man charged in soccer parade incident that injured scores
Rescue crews attend to victims after a man rammed a crowd gathered for a victory parade for the Liverpool FC soccer team in Liverpool on Monday. Photo by Adam Vaughan/EPA-EFE May 29 (UPI) -- Police have charged a 53-year-old man for driving his vehicle into a crowd of people who had gathered for a parade to celebrate Liverpool FC's title victory in the English Premier League soccer tournament. At least 79 people were injured in the incident Monday when the man, Paul Doyle, from the West Derby area of Liverpool, drove a Ford Galaxy into the celebrants in the city center, video verified by the BBC shows. Some fans tried to divert the car before it hit more parade-goers. Seven of the people who were injured remain hospitalized. "I hope that all of those who were injured or witnessed this terrible incident are able -- and given time -- to heal and recover," Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Jenny Sims said at a news conference, local media reported. Doyle was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offenses and driving while "unfit through drugs," police reported. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Police said the incident was not terrorism related and is believed to be an isolated event. Local media reported that the driver of the vehicle followed an ambulance into the area that was supposed to have been restricted to traffic for the parade, local media reported. Doyle's LinkedIn profile says that he is the head of cyber initiatives at a data center and served in the Royal Marines from 1990 to 1994. Local media reported that Doyle is a married father of three. "Neighbors described him as " such a normal Liverpool dad" and a "genuinely pleasant family man," The Times of London reported. "When police arrived at his house late on Monday night, the neighbors said they had assumed there had been a burglary." Police said officers are continuing to investigate the incident.

Photo by Adam Vaughan/EPA-EFE May 26 (UPI) -- A British man was arrested after a vehicle drove into and injured several soccer fans celebrating during the Liverpool Football Club's victory parade on Monday evening. The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time on Water Street in Liverpool's city center, where soccer fans had gathered for a parade celebrating the local football club's Premier League title win, the Daily Mail reported. No fatalities have been reported, but an unknown number of people were injured. Merseyside Police said a 53-year-old White British man from the Liverpool area was arrested, but they don't know if he drove the vehicle. Local police have asked that people not speculate on the collision's cause. Liverpool FC officials are in direct contact with local police regarding the event that happened near the end of the trophy parade, a club spokesperson said in a prepared statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident," the spokesperson said. "We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident." Before the parade incident that injured several people, another 17 were injured during incidents involving flares ahead of the title celebrations, the BBC reported.
