Pogacar loses key teammate Almeida in Tour de France blow
CHATEAUROUX, France :Tadej Pogacar's Tour de France hopes suffered a blow on Sunday as the Slovenian's key domestique Joao Almeida withdrew following a crash on Friday. Almeida, 26, who finished fourth in the general classification last year, abandoned after 89km of stage nine, two days after fracturing a rib in a spectacular high-speed crash. The Portuguese rider had come into the race in brilliant form having won the Tour de Suisse, the Tour of the Basque Country and the Tour de Romandie earlier this year. "We are really sad that we lost Joao (Almeida) today," Pogacar told reporters on Sunday. "I think it was just too much. I was suffering today on the bike... I cannot imagine him with all the pain, it must be really, really painful." "It's a really big loss. Joao was in a super great shape." Three-time Tour champion Pogacar lamented his teammate's withdrawal a day before the race enters the Massif Central with 4,450 metres of climbing awaiting the peloton on Monday. "It was a luxury to have him in the GC (general classification), he could also do a great result for himself here in the Tour," Pogacar said. "For sure, he would be a big help on the mountains. Now we have to reassess a little bit. We will try to win this Tour for Joao." World champion Pogacar can still count on the support of some good climbers including Adam Yates, who claimed third overall in 2023, Marc Soler and Pavel Sivakov.

Seven star opens up about shock split with fiancé of three years: 'There were things I couldn't come back from'
A 7News Queensland presenter has opened up about the 'toughest year' of her life, which saw her relationship break down just weeks after her mother's death. Chief reporter Katrina Blowers was left 'blindsided' and 'nearly broken' last year when she split from fiancé Adam Yates after a three-year relationship. What made the separation harder was the death of her mother, Elizabeth Barnes, to motor neurone disease just weeks earlier, reported The Courier Mail on Friday. 'It has definitely been the toughest year of my life. It nearly broke me, I'm not going to sugar-coat that,' she told the publication. 'I had to come to terms with the loss of my mother, but also the loss of a future that I had to recalibrate.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Katrina went on to say facing a relationship breakdown while mourning the loss of her mother 'affected her mental health' in the most 'challenging' way. The reporter said she was shocked by the split, as she was in the midst of planning her wedding to the former Surfing Queensland CEO, whom she met in 2021. Katrina said Adam stuck by her side during hospital visits to see her mother, but their romance crumbled following the funeral, less than a year after their engagement. 'There were things I couldn't come back from, and I chose to end the engagement. I was completely shocked; it was really tough,' she said of the break-up. Now, Katrina has only the remnants of nuptials which never came to fruition, including a wedding dress which she has decided to donate to charity. Adam popped the question to Katrina in 2023 in an elaborate surprise proposal while on holiday in the Maldives to celebrate his 40th birthday. The Brisbane-based news anchor was left stunned when Adam got down on one knee beside a pool covered in 'one million' rose petals shipped in from India. Staff are said to have spent 'the whole day individually peeling the petals off the roses to fill the pool'. Adam also proposed with 'the exact ring' Katrina had dreamed of—an oval-shaped diamond on a thin gold band. 'I'm usually pretty alert to clues and things, but he really got me going. It really surprised me,' Katrina said at the time. 'I was just blown away. It's made me feel, honestly, so, so special and the level of thought and attention to detail that he went to is incredible.' Katrina was previously married to a man named Tom, with whom she shares children Zahra, 17, and Jed, 14. The pair divorced in 2019 after a 20-year relationship—13 of which were spent in marriage.

Tour de France Q&A: put your questions to David Walsh
T he 2025 Tour de France begins on Saturday and is shaping up to be an absolute classic. The three-times winner Tadej Pogacar is the presumptive favourite for the Yellow Jersey but could a fit and firing Jonas Vingegaard restore the balance in their rivalry? Failing that, can Remco Evenepoel or perennial Tour bridesmaid Primoz Roglic have a say this year at the summit of the standings? Throw in generational talents — and rivals — Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel hunting stage wins, sprinting stars such as Tim Merlier and Jasper Philipsen and an exciting route, and cycling fans are in for a treat. From a British perspective, who should fans look out for without Tom Pidcock on the start line? Can Adam or Simon Yates — the latter fresh from his Giro win — upset the apple cart, will Geraint Thomas roll back the years in his final Tour before retirement, and what can we expect from up-and-comers Oscar Onley, 22, and Jake Stewart, 25? For the answers to these questions and more, post your queries for David Walsh in the comments section below. He will answer them live from 5-6pm on Thursday, July 3.

British rider Simon Yates wins elusive Giro d'Italia title
Britain's Simon Yates, in the pink jersey, shares a light moment with his brother Adam Yates, during the last stage of the Giro d'Italia cycling race, in Rome, Sunday, June 1, 2025. (Fabio Ferrari/LaPresse via AP) ROME (AP) — British rider Simon Yates cruised to overall victory in the Giro d'Italia on Sunday — finally winning the race that had eluded him so often. After attacking on the gravel-road climb to take the pink jersey in the penultimate stage on Saturday, Yates finished nearly four minutes ahead of runner-up Isaac Del Toro, the 21-year-old Mexican who wore pink for 10 days before Yates took control. Advertisement It's the second Grand Tour title for Yates after he won the Spanish Vuelta in 2018. Yates wore pink for 13 days during the 2018 Giro before cracking on one of the final climbs. He also had to withdraw from the Italian race in 2020 and 2022 — because of coronavirus and a knee injury, respectively. ___ AP cycling:
