Adani Electricity on Monday said it is observing National Electrical Safety Week across its divisions and supply area from June 26 to July 2. During this week, various electrical safety-related educational workshops and programmes are being organised for employees and customers, the company said in a statement. Additionally, Adani Electricity, in association with Adani Foundation, is also organising electrical safety workshops in BMC schools. In April, in a bid to promote fire prevention, Adani Electricity observed 'Fire Service Week', throughout its power distribution area. During the week, various fire safety workshops were organised for Adani Electricity's power warriors. The theme for this year was "Unite to Ignite, a Fire Safe India," emphasising the significance of community involvement, education, preparedness and innovations in fire safety. In March, Adani Electricity observed the 'National Safety Week 2025', maintaining high safety standards as India progresses towards development. This pivotal hub will orchestrate response efforts and operate round-the-clock, ensuring swift action and communication throughout the monsoon period. "Seven Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been strategically deployed across the distribution network. These teams are equipped with comprehensive response, recovery, and restoration plans specifically tailored for the challenges posed by the monsoon season," the company said in a statement. To monitor rising water levels, 98 advanced water level sensors are now integrated with the Advanced Distribution Management System at critical locations. This setup enhances the ability to pre-empt and respond to flood-related electrical issues.

License bids of Adani Electricity and Torrent Power to be heard in July
Mumbai: On Monday, Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission sought people's suggestions and objections for Adani Electricity's license bid to supply power to Thane district and Torrent Power's bids to supply power to Nagpur and surrounding areas. A public hearing on the matter is scheduled to take place on July 23. (AFP Photo) Torrent Power Limited has also applied for a licence to supply power to Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation, Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation and Thane Municipal Corporation along with that of Nagpur. Earlier, Adani Electricity Navi Mumbai Limited, a division of Adani Transmission Limited, had submitted a bid to acquire a license to supply power to Thane district and Torrent Power Limited, a Gujarat-based establishment, had applied for a licence to supply power in Nagpur and surrounding areas which has been on hold owing to opposition from activists and political parties. Thane district includes areas of Bhandup, Mulund, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Kharghar, Taloja and Uran. Bhandup and Mulund, though considered a part of Mumbai, fall under Thane district as per Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited's (MSEDCL's) records. The region, at present, draws power from MSEDCL. This is an attempt to provide options to the consumers to choose an entity which would provide electricity to their household. This is called Parallel Electricity Distribution Licence where Thane residents would get to choose between MSEDCL or Adani Electricity. Similarly, the residents of the island city of Mumbai have the options of Tata Power and BEST for power supply and those living in the city's suburbs have the options of Tata Power and Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited, to choose their power supplier. The Adani group is set to invest over ₹ 6,000 crore for the setting up of the new network, on the approval of the license. Power consumption in the region is estimated to grow at 8% CAGR over the next five years. The Navi Mumbai-Panvel belt is set to become a major hub of development and construction with projects like Adani group's Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA's) planned projects in the region. Being a native of Nagpur, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's keen interests on developing the region is set to increase the demand for power in Nagpur, owing to the push for industrialisation. On receiving necessary clearance from the Forest Advisory committee of the union environment ministry in April this year, Tata Power is developing Bhivpuri off stream open loop pump storage in Karjat area of Raigad district. The project has proposed a total investment of ₹ 13,000 crore which would greatly contribute to the clean energy landscape of India. With a 1800 MW Pumped hydro Storage Project to be located at Shirawata, Pune district and a 1000 MW Pumped hydro Storage Project at Bhivpuri, Raigad district, MSEDCL will eventually be able to supply power in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, sources said, Sources from MSEDCL said.

MSEDCL eyes licence for power supply across Mumbai
MUMBAI: State-owned Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), which supplies electricity to parts of Mumbai's eastern suburbs and the rest of Maharashtra, is seeking a licence to expand its jurisdiction to the rest of Mumbai, from Colaba to Dahisar. It also aims to supply electricity to areas that fall under the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, just outside Mumbai's city limits. To this end, MSEDCL, also known as Mahavitaran, has filed a petition for a parallel electricity distribution licence with the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). At present, three companies supply electricity to Mumbai, the latest being Tata Power, after Adani Electricity and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking. Should MSEDCL be granted a licence, it would become the fourth supplier, offering consumers another option in a market where rates vary. In 2022, Adani Electricity had applied for a parallel licence to supply power to Navi Mumbai and adjoining areas, with a plan to invest ₹5,700 crore. The move was opposed by MSEDCL as Navi Mumbai generates significant revenue for the state-owned corporation, due to the number of high-end consumers here, such as housing societies, business establishments and industrial units, among others. MSEDCL's application for a parallel licence for electricity distribution in Mumbai and its suburbs is a counter move as Adani has a strong presence in the metropolis. MSEDCL's petition has been filed under Sections 14 and 15 of the Electricity Act, 2003, as well as the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission Rules, 2006, and the Electricity Distribution Licencing Rules, 2005, which allows for such a parallel licence. MSEDCL currently serves 31.7 million customers in 457 cities and 41,928 villages in the state via a large electricity distribution network of 4,230 power sub-stations, 25,000 high-voltage feeders, 9,60,000 distribution transformers, 3,64,000 km of 11 kV lines, and 51,771 km of 33 kV lines. MSEDCL supplies 26,000 MW electricity to the state, daily, while Mumbai's current requirement is 4,000 MW. 'Mumbai is seeing rapid development due to large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the Coastal Road and an expansion in its metro network. This improved connectivity is fuelling residential, commercial and industrial expansion, said an official with MSEDCL. 'Many data centres are being developed in the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai, and they require a large amount of electricity. Apart from this, many businesses in the service sector are expanding. All this will require a large amount of power and MSEDCL can provide them cheap electricity,' he said. Lokesh Chandra, managing director, MSEDCL, said, 'Efforts will be made to provide affordable, green electricity and cheaper tariffs to Mumbaiites, as 52% of the power will come from green energy sources by 2030.'
