"Boundary of Kolkata airport should be sealed immediately": Suvendu Adhikari
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 26 (ANI): The leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for the immediate sealing of the boundary at Kolkata airport. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said that the current situation at the airport poses a major security risk. 'What is happening at Kolkata Airport is a matter of great concern from a security perspective. Prayers are being performed on the ground. The boundary of Kolkata Airport is not being sealed,' he said. He expressed worry over the movement of outsiders in and around the airport premises. 'People from outside are coming and going, and there is also connectivity to China and Bangladesh from here. We have demanded that the boundary (of Kolkata Airport) be sealed,' Adhikari said. Adhikari also highlighted that two newly developed runways have still not been made operational despite being completed with central government funding. 'The two new runways for which the central government allocated a budget, and whose work has also been completed, have not been made operational. Only a single runway is functional,' he said. He attributed the delay in operating the new runway to an issue involving a religious structure. 'The reason given is the relocation of the Mosque to the secondary runway. This cannot go on,' Adhikari remarked. Calling for urgent action, he said, 'The boundary wall should be closed immediately. The boundary of such a sensitive international airport should be sealed immediately.' Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the state government for not participating in the nationwide celebration. He alleged that while both NDA and non-NDA ruled states observed the day, West Bengal deliberately skipped it. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said, 'NDA and non-NDA state governments are celebrating Yoga Day today, except West Bengal, because West Bengal follows Bangladesh. It does not follow Delhi. More than 180 countries are celebrating International Yoga Day today. As Indians, we are proud of this.' The sharp remarks came as International Yoga Day was celebrated across the country, promoting the physical and mental health benefits of yoga. (ANI)

BJP's Suvendu says prasad from Puri Jagannath temple to be distributed in Tamluk town
Both Tamluk and Digha are situated in Purba Medinipur district of the state. The BJP leader's announcement came when the state's TMC government is distributing the prasad from Digha's Jagannath temple, inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on April 30, to people across West Bengal. Kolkata, Jun 25 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday said that 'prasad' from the Jagannath Temple in Puri will be distributed to the public from a temple in Tamluk town for five days from Rath Yatra day on June 27. Adhikari accused the ruling TMC of distributing local sweets in the name of 'prasad' of Jagannath temple at Digha. He said that the 'prasad' from the Puri Jagannath temple will be distributed to the public for five days from Rath Yatra day from the Gauranga Mahaprabhu temple at Tamluk. The TMC accused Adhikari of bringing politics into religion. 'Only Suvendu Adhikari can indulge in competition over religion,' TMC spokesperson Jaiprakash Majumdar said. He also said that when the general Bengali people go to offer their obeisance to the Goddess during Durga Puja festival, they buy sweets from the local shops only. Asserting that there is nothing to indulge in politics over this issue, the TMC leader said 'Adhikari is playing football over religion.' Kaliganj bypoll results show Hindu votes consolidating behind BJP: State party leaders
Kolkata: Despite losing the Kaliganj Assembly by-election in Nadia district, senior BJP leaders in West Bengal claimed on Tuesday that booth-wise polling trends indicated a growing consolidation of Hindu votes behind the party. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the booth-level data revealed a clear divide -- BJP candidate Ashish Ghosh performed poorly in Muslim-majority booths, while he led in most Hindu-dominated ones. 'In the Kaliganj bypoll, the BJP candidate received either single-digit votes or failed to cross 50 votes in most Muslim-dominated booths. In contrast, the BJP was ahead in nearly all Hindu-majority booths,' Adhikari said on Tuesday. 'This unity of Hindu voters will pave the way for the rise of Hindutva politics in Bengal,' he added. Adhikari asserted that Hindu unity was essential for political change in the state. 'If Hindus remain divided, attacks on them will continue in places like Mothabari, Murshidabad, and Maheshtala. But if Hindus unite across Bengal, a political shift is inevitable in 2026,' he said. BJP state general secretary and former journalist Jagannath Chattopadhyay supported Adhikari's claim with statistics. Citing polling data, he said that the BJP's support among Hindu voters in Kaliganj had steadily increased over recent elections. 'Kaliganj has approximately 1,07,846 Hindu voters (43 per cent) and 1,44,932 Muslim voters (57 per cent). Of the 1,85,664 votes polled in this by-election (73 per cent turnout), around 71,000 were cast by Hindus -- a turnout of 69 per cent among Hindus. Our data show that BJP's support among Hindu voters rose from 70 per cent in the 2021 Assembly polls to 72 per cent in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and now stands at over 74 per cent -- the highest ever,' Chattopadhyay said. However, Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed, who won the seat by a margin of over 50,000 votes, rejected the BJP's narrative. 'The people of Kaliganj have once again shown that there is no place for communal politics in West Bengal. Voters from all communities supported us,' she said.
