Parent living near Oasis gig venue demands dress code to protect 'moral decency'
A 'concerned resident' has suggested that 'minimum dress standards' and 'buffer zones' be established for the upcoming Oasis reunion concerts at Heaton Park in Manchester to tackle issues of 'indecent exposure'. The band's highly anticipated reunion tour is set to hit the city in just under two weeks. Oasis will mark their first performance in 16 years with a gig in Cardiff on Friday (July 4) night on a tour that also takes in two dates at Croke Park on August 16 and 17. However, the gigs have stirred up mixed feelings among the residents of Prestwich and Blackley, the suburban areas neighbouring Heaton Park. Rachel Varley, a mother of three, expressed her frustration last month, saying: "I don't think it's fair on residents. I just think it's really poor to put such a big event on in such a family residential area. Why is it not in an arena?". Others are more accommodating of the influx of music enthusiasts, which is a regular occurrence due to the annual Parklife festival in June. Many locals believe the Oasis event won't pose any new challenges, reports the Manchester Evening News. Zainab Nawaz, 19, said: "It happens every year, you get used to it. It's always packed. It's a bit of an inconvenience [on the road] but other than that, we live in front of a big park, what do you expect?" An unnamed local, who said they live near the park, has now urged Manchester council and concert promoters SJM to enforce strict rules at the Oasis shows to combat what they describe as 'inappropriate dress and indecent exposure'. In an email sent to Manchester council, Greater Manchester Police, and local councillors, the resident stated: "As a parent/resident, I find it deeply offensive, inappropriate, and harmful for impressionable young minds to be exposed to this without choice. "This is not a matter of taste or fashion - it is a matter of basic public standards, community respect, and moral decency in shared spaces. I am therefore asking the Council and event organizers to: Enforce a minimum dress code standard within the surrounding public areas of Heaton Park (especially outside festival gates); Consider buffer zones or event fencing that reduces direct visibility of attendees from public walkways and streets; Engage in public consultation with local families and schools who are impacted by the exposure of this content; Consider the long-term damage to Heaton Park's reputation as a safe, family-friendly environment. "It should not be acceptable for children walking near their homes, schools, or parks to witness what would be considered indecent exposure in any other situation - all under the umbrella of 'festival culture'." It's understood Manchester council lacks the authority to enforce a dress code at the highly anticipated shows, despite being the organisation which owns Heaton Park. The attire of the Oasis fans is also anticipated to be quite distinct, with parka coats, bucket hats, and Adidas Gazelle trainers predicted to be the fashion choice of the day, as opposed to skin-tight fluorescent leotards. Both Manchester council and SJM have been contacted for comment. Tickets for the Oasis reunion sold out across all venues due to huge demand when they went online earlier in the year. However, there are still several options available for fans trying to snag a last-minute spot. Limited last-minute tickets can be bought from the official Ticketmaster resale site, where fans who can no longer go sell their seats, although these tend to go into and out of stock quickly. Elsewhere, resale sites like Viagogo, Vivid Seats, StubHub and Twickets are selling tickets for various dates, although fans should always bear in mind that many official sites, such as Ticketmaster and Live Nation, discourage the purchase of resale tickets.
