Govt boosts veterans' economy with PUVET programme in Malaysia

ALOR GAJAH: The government is committed to enhancing the economic well-being of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans through the Veteran Economic Empowerment Programme (PUVET). Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said the programme provides support, including equipment, training, and business capital, to improve competitiveness, with a digital business training programme, soon to be launched in Kelantan being its latest initiative. 'This is a pilot project known as 'Beg Kuning' (Yellow Bag), where selected veteran entrepreneurs will be trained to run digital or online businesses. 'The programme is a collaboration between the Defence Ministry, government-linked companies (GLCs), and several other agencies,' he told reporters in Kampung Lendu here today after meeting veterans under the MADANI Veterans' Care programme, which was also attended by Veterans Affairs Department deputy director-general Sophian Isswandy Ismail. Adly met 26 veteran families, including widows and entrepreneurs, in Alor Gajah, Melaka and Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan and presented Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) medals, assistance, Rahmah baskets, and business support during the programme. Adly noted that PUVET has received an annual grant of RM1 million since its introduction in 2023 through collaboration with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) under Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW). 'Through the RM1 million grant, selected recipients receive in-kind grants worth around RM5,000, including fish feed, seeds, equipment, and basic business machines,' he shared. He said that nearly 70 per cent of the approximately 5,000 retired veterans have chosen to venture into entrepreneurship, and programmes like PUVET are essential in providing comprehensive support for this group. 'Through comprehensive initiatives like PUVET, we not only help veterans become self-reliant but also strengthen their role as contributors to national economic development,' he added. - Bernama

Over 48,346 Armed Forces veterans have been awarded the Malaysian Service Medal since 2004

MELAKA, June 17 — Since 2004, a total of 48,346 Malaysian Armed Forces (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia in Bahasa Malaysia) veterans have been awarded the Malaysian Service Medal or Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) in recognition of their contribution to the nation. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari described the medal as a symbol of the government's appreciation of ATM veterans who fought to protect the country, religion, and race. 'This awarding of the medals is very meaningful, especially to former soldiers who sacrificed so much in the fight to eliminate Communist elements during the previous Emergency era,' he said. 'It is also a gesture of gratitude from society for the sacrifices of these national heroes, which have enabled the peace we enjoy today.' Adly made the remarks during the PJM Award Ceremony at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh recently. At the event, 1,000 ATM veterans, including widows, from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, received their medals. The ceremony was organised by the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Affairs Department (JHEV ATM). Also present were Major General Datuk Haji Semaon bin Haji Marjuki, Third Division Commander Major General Datuk Mohamad Suria Mohamad Saad, and representatives from the Melaka ATM Veterans Association. Adly reiterated the Defence Ministry's commitment to supporting ATM veterans, particularly in helping them secure second careers. He highlighted that 49 ATM veterans have successfully been placed in high-tech industries through the MyWIRA Veterans Programme. 'This achievement shows that we are not only providing them with employment opportunities but also helping them achieve better incomes after their service,' he added. Some ATM veterans and family members expressed their gratitude for the recognition. Former Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM) member V. Devandran, 70, said that throughout his career with TUDM he had the opportunity to serve under several national leaders before retiring. Veteran P. Shunmugan, 74, who served for 21 years, recounted having to adapt to seven different battalions across postings in Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur. 'Serving in different battalions meant constantly learning new things,' he said. As a former Warrant Officer 2, Shunmugan advised the younger generation of soldiers to stay committed to their responsibilities.

Mindef aims to digitalise all 38 schools in camps nationwide

KLUANG: The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) aims to digitalise all 38 schools in camps nationwide as part of efforts to cultivate the use of creative technology among children of defence personnel. Deputy Minister Adly Zahari said the initiative is aligned with the Ministry of Education's Digital Education Policy launched in 2023, which seeks to produce digitally fluent students capable of navigating the demands of today's technological landscape. 'This initiative will also empower educators and education leaders to integrate digital technology into the education ecosystem, strengthen digital infrastructure and content, as well as optimise strategic partnerships to advance digital education,' he said after launching the Affin Digital Space at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sultan Sir Ibrahim here today. SK Sultan Sir Ibrahim is among the three schools that were selected for this year's pilot project, through a collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Affin Bank Berhad, with an allocation of RM94,000. The first two schools to implement the initiative were SK Kementah and SK TUDM Subang. 'All 38 schools in camps, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, will be digitalised in phases, subject to feedback and the effectiveness of the pilot project,' said Adly. He stressed that digitalisation is not only aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of teaching and learning but also supports the national well-being ecosystem through the MADANI nation-building agenda and the National Fourth Industrial Revolution policy. At SK Sultan Sir Ibrahim, a green screen technology studio has been set up to enable students and teachers to produce creative, media-based educational content. 'During the launch, the school media crew also demonstrated the use of green screen facilities, video editing techniques and lighting setups. A short video presentation titled Bicara Pemimpin was also screened, highlighting the students' talents, especially members of the school resource centre's TV team,' he added.
