Oisin Murphy breaks silence after £70,000 drink-drive ban and jets out of Britain for huge £330,000 ride

OISIN MURPHY is jetting out of Britain a day after his £70,000 drink-drive ban and grovelling apology for a late night car crash. The four-time champion jockey was given the massive fine and 20-month disqualification at Reading Magistrates' Court on Thursday following his guilty plea. Murphy smashed his Mercedes into a tree in Hermitage, Berkshire, and left a female passenger with 'serious injuries' just after midnight on April 27. The BHA have confirmed the 29-year-old Irishman is free to continue riding. And he has the chance to get back almost half of his fine in one go thanks to a money-spinning ride in the US on Friday night. Murphy heads to New York for the leg up on Qatar Racing-owned New Century in the Belmont Derby at Saratoga, where victory in the 10.45pm BST contest is worth £330,000. Should Murphy oblige on the well-backed 7-4 favourite he could expect roughly ten per cent of the winnings - around £30,000. He won't spend long in the US though. Murphy is right back into the thick of things at Sandown on Saturday for their brilliant Coral-Eclipse card. He'll fly overnight from the States and land in time for the ride on Royal Ascot winner Adrestia in the 1.50 at the Surrey track. That's the first of seven rides on the day, the highlight being 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court in the Eclipse itself. Murphy released a statement on X on Thursday evening after his guilty plea. He said: "I would like to sincerely apologise for my actions. "I know that drink driving is unacceptable and there is no excuse for what I did. "I have let a lot of people down. "I particularly want to apologise to my passenger and her family. "Due to the police investigation, I have so far been able to share only minimal details of my offence with the British Horseracing Authority. "I will now be fully co-operative with their enquiries. . "I was going mental!' says Royal Ascot punter who turned £10 into £14,000

Bets are going on for the final day of Royal Ascot 2025 and one punter is still celebrating some amazing results on day four after backing Venetian Sun, Never Let Go and Adrestia in a £10 acca A Royal Ascot punter is celebrating after an astonishing £10 bet paid out more than £14,000. The racing fan placed a £5 each-way acca on day four winners Venetian Sun (7-1), Never Let Go (22-1) and Adrestia (10-1). Ladbrokes reported how the customer picked out the horses from looking at the selections from information available in their Braintree branch. ‌ Wishing to remain anonymous, they said: "I just went with the tips in the shop! I couldn't believe it when I was on for the win going into the final race. I was watching the last race and thought if Adrestia gets out, she's not getting caught. I was going mental!' ‌ The run of luck started on the good to firm course when Karl Burke-trained juvenile Venetian Sun sprinted six furlongs for the Group Three Albany Stakes. That event was the first of seven run at 2.30pm, so the punter had to wait two-and-a-half hours before seeing if their luck would continue. But remarkably it did, with 22-1 outsider Never Let Go finishing strongly on the far side under Kieran Shoemark in the 5pm Sandringham Stakes. It was a welcome winner for the jockey, who until recently rode the top horses for John and Thady Gosden, a pair who saddled Group One stars Field Of Gold and Ombudsman this week. "I'm relieved, I needed a winner," said Shoemark. "It has been a tough six weeks or so." The jockey's triumphant effort on Ed Walker's filly was then followed by Adrestia making a successful late dash in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes. The winnings amounted to £14,158 and Ladbrokes spokesperson Cal Gildart said: 'After punters left us with our tail between our legs the previous day, this customer landed one of the bets of Royal Ascot on a day when upsets might have otherwise left us smiling. Congratulations on an incredible win. 'They'll never let go of this memory – and might already be planning a fitting trip to Venice with their winnings!'
