James Gunn Shoots Down ‘Wonder Woman' Casting Theory

Andor There is no one more determined to address and kill fake news items and rumors than DCU head James Gunn, so much so that it's almost become a full-time job for him. Now, he's turned his attention toward a recent rumor about the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, something that did not exist when he first laid out his DCU plans after coming aboard. There's a theory that Gunn is eying Andor actress Adria Arjona to play Wonder Woman due to the fact that he follows her on Instagram. But Gunn said that isn't what happened here: That said, it's not a knock against Arjona, and he's also giving her a vote of confidence: Of course, it's up to Gunn who gets cast, but would he go with Arjona when she's been rumored for this role publicly, and he's talking about it openly? Normally I'd say no, but with James Gunn, he's hard to predict. Hit Man In addition to the Instagram thing, the general consensus is simply that Arjona looks like Wonder Woman and would be great in the role. She's Puerto Rican, not Greek, but neither was the last Diana, the Israeli Gal Gadot. Arjona is also the girlfriend of Jason Momoa, the DCEU veteran who will now enter the DCU playing Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie and other projects. Gunn has a history of casting those close to him, and between that connection and, more importantly, their apparent status as 'best friends,' I mean, are you not going to give your best friend a role she would be great in, that you just publicly said she'd be great in? The DCU is a really out-there experiment in relative openness with Gunn and the polar opposite of the MCU and its much quieter head Kevin Feige. Not that he never talks, but he's a churchmouse compared to Gunn, who makes news almost every other day with some bit of news or rumor rebuttal. This is only part of a rumor rebuttal, dismissing the Instagram theory. But in the process I think he revealed that Arjona as Wonder Woman could be a real possibility regardless. Adria Arjona could be the next Wonder Woman, James Gunn hints

James Gunn, the chief of DC Studios, may have just dropped a major hint about the future of Wonder Woman in his revamped DC Universe. During a recent interview, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy teased that actor Adria Arjona could be a great fit for the iconic superhero role. Gunn, known for his work on blockbuster superhero films, shared his thoughts on Arjona, who recently starred in Hit Man. When discussing the actress, he lightheartedly responded to rumours surrounding his social media activity, revealing that he had followed Arjona on Instagram, which led many fans to speculate that she might be cast as Wonder Woman. "I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out, 'He just followed her, that means she's Wonder Woman,'" Gunn explained. He added, "She'd be a great Wonder Woman, by the way," he was quoted as saying by Variety. Gunn clarified that his support for Arjona wasn't solely based on her social media presence but was rooted in a long-standing professional relationship. "She was in a movie that I made seven years ago," he recalled, adding, "We've been friends and have known each other since that time," he said. "I followed her then, I didn't just follow her." While Gunn's statement sparked speculation about Arjona's involvement in the DC Universe, he didn't confirm anything outright. However, the remark suggests that Gunn has been considering the actress for some time, making her a potential candidate for the role of Wonder Woman in the future. Earlier this year, Gunn shared insights about his plans for Wonder Woman during an interview. He revealed that a new Wonder Woman movie is currently being written, which will be a key part of the revamped DC Universe. Gunn also announced that a series focused on the Amazonian heroine's homeland, Themyscira, is in development for HBO, Variety reported. While the TV series is progressing slowly, he assured fans that it was moving forward. In addition to Wonder Woman's solo projects, Gunn's expansive DC slate includes other major releases. His Superman film, starring David Corenswet as the iconic superhero, is slated for release in July 2025. Another exciting project, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, will hit theatres in June 2026, with Craig Gillespie at the helm. The DC Universe is not just limited to Wonder Woman and Superman. Gunn and his team are working on several highly anticipated films. One of the most unique projects in the pipeline is Clayface, a horror-themed origin story of one of Batman's most notorious villains. Directed by James Watkins with a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is expected to bring a fresh take to the DC villain landscape when it arrives in September 2026.

The Star Wars actor who director James Gunn says would be ‘great' as Wonder Woman

James Gunn, overseeing the new DC Universe, addressed speculation regarding Adria Arjona potentially playing Wonder Woman. Gunn stated that Arjona 'would be a great Wonder Woman' but clarified his Instagram follow was due to their long-standing friendship, not a casting hint. Arjona previously worked with Gunn on the 2016 film 'The Belko Experiment' and expressed gratitude for his early support in her career. Gal Gadot, who previously portrayed Wonder Woman, had her third film cancelled after James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC. Gadot expressed feeling 'empowered' by the cancellation, stating it allows her to pursue her own projects and act as an actress-for-hire.

Adria Arjona recalls 'Andor' audition: 'I was freaking out'

June 24 (UPI) -- Adria Arjona says she "was freaking out" when she auditioned for the Star Wars series Andor. She dished about the experience to her co-star Diego Luna, who portrays Cassian Andor in the Rogue One prequel, and who is guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live this week. "I did the first scene and it lasted maybe a minute. I got no notes, which, if any of you here are an actor, that is a horrible thing. That means I failed. That means I didn't get the job," Arjona said. She said writer-creator Tony Gilroy then had Luna leave the room for her next scene. She made a mistake and then tried again. "And I was freaking out," she said. "Then I do the scene again, and silence in the room. I'm freaking out. I'm like, 'I didn't get the job. I didn't get the job. This is the second time I don't get a Star Wars job. I'll never get it again.' And I was heartbroken." "And then Tony just kind of looks at me and goes, 'Welcome to Star Wars, kid,'" she added. "He changed my life in 10 minutes." The second and final season of the series landed on Disney+ April 22.

‘Andor' Star Stellan Skarsgård Was the Ultimate ‘Star Wars' Script Rulebreaker

The level of secrecy on Disney's prized franchises is known to be on another level. Between Marvel and Star Wars, script and set leaks are something the studio wants to keep the spigot closed on. But it turns out that sometimes tight security makes the work challenging for its stars, including certain cast members of the hit Disney+ show Andor. The nugget of behind the scenes lore was revealed while Andor star Diego Luna, who is currently doing a stint hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live, had own his Star Wars universe co-star Adria Arjona on to reminisce about shooting the Disney+ series. He brought up that production resorted to high-tech alternatives for its actors to learn their lines. 'They wouldn't print a script for you because you would lose it. So we would have iPads to work,' Luna explained of the protocol before asking Arjona how she fared under that decree. 'I didn't use it,' she admitted, 'I took pictures of it and I printed the whole script.' As in pictures of the screen, which Luna cracked was very much in line with the spies they played on the Tony Gilroy show. 'You were so mad at me the first time in rehearsal. You looked at me like, 'Adria, they're gonna find out!' You were so paranoid.' Arjona revealed, 'And my answer was like, 'Stellan [Skarsgård] did it too.' I just completely threw Stellan under the bus.' 'I remember that. Stellan didn't give an [expletive],' Luna said. 'He was like, 'Yes, I've been doing it.'' Arjona continued, 'I just kept doing it. Season two, I did it too.' She explained, 'I just need the paper. I need to write things down. [The iPad script] also has so many passwords and then I would have ADD and then do something else and then it would lock me out … it was so complicated. So I printed it.' Since the ending of Andor featured Arjona's character holding a real hell of a twist in her arms, we'd say she was successful. Watch the rest of the interview below: Want more io9 news?
