Assam tea's 200-year legacy to shine at Summer Fancy Food Show 2025 in New York
Guwahati : The timeless aroma and legacy of Assam Tea will take center stage at the Summer Fancy Food Show 2025 , to be held at the Jacob Javits Center, New York City, from June 29 to July 1, 2025. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Assam Tea, a milestone that honours the origin, global journey, and economic significance of India's most iconic brew. The India Pavilion , which will house a specially designed 'Tea Lounge', will be jointly inaugurated by Ravi Kota, Chief Secretary of Assam, and Ambassador Binaya S. Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York, on Sunday, June 29. At the behest of the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and initiated and supported by the Consulate General of India in New York, this initiative follows the success of Advantage Assam 2.0 held earlier this year. It aims to not only promote Assam's rich tea heritage but also to expand trade and export opportunities in the U.S. market. By bringing together established tea companies, small growers, and innovative startups, the event embodies a unified vision of heritage, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration, fostering deeper economic and cultural ties between the two largest democracies in the world. The 'Assam Tea Lounge' will offer visitors an immersive experience through thoughtfully curated live brewing bars, sommelier-led tasting sessions, and artisan tea pairings with cookies, chocolates, and more. Visitors can explore the evolution of Assam Tea through engaging storytelling sessions, video interviews with tea growers, and showcases on sustainability, women-led cooperatives, and certifications like Rainforest Alliance. The space will also be adorned with Assamese design elements — from visuals of tea gardens and local crafts to musical and dance performances that highlight the state's rich cultural tapestry. In celebration of the bicentennial, the booth will also feature a 'Masala Chai Cart,' a tea passport giveaway programme, and collaboration with partners like 'Kolkata Chai Co., Elements Truffles', and celebrated Indian chefs for dessert and cocktail demos infused with Assam Tea. Assam's tea journey began in 1823, when Scottish explorer Robert Bruce discovered the indigenous Camellia assamica plant with the help of the Singpho tribe. With the first commercial plantation starting in 1837 and India's first Indian-owned tea estate founded by Maniram Dewan in 1842, Assam rapidly became a pillar of the global tea trade. Today, Assam remains the largest contiguous tea-growing region in the world, producing over 52% of India's total tea output, including robust CTC, orthodox, organic, and GI-tagged teas. The event will also bring together major industry players, including the India Tea Association, Tata Consumer Products Ltd. , Goodricke Group , Luxmi Tea, HUL , Woolah Tea, and Aromica Tea, among others, with active participation from the Indian diaspora and global food industry stakeholders. Institutions like the Tocklai Tea Research Institute and platforms like the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) continue to support Assam's global competitiveness through innovation and transparent trade.

Cairn Oil & Gas powers Assam's tea industry with clean energy shift
Cairn Oil & Gas has been supplying clean natural gas from its Hazarigaon Gas unit in Assam to tea estates across Upper Assam. Producing more than 55 per cent of India's tea and nearly one-sixth of global supply, Assam's tea sector is the backbone of the state's economy. With over 650 million kilograms of tea produced annually, it supports the livelihoods of nearly three million people, from pluckers to packagers, and contributes significantly to India's GDP. As Assam's largest agri-based industry, tea is not just a symbol of heritage - it's a pillar of progress. Cairn Oil & Gas has been supplying clean natural gas from its Hazarigaon Gas unit in Assam, the first northeast block auctioned under the Discovered Small Fields (DSF) policy to be put to production, to tea estates across Upper Assam in collaboration with Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL) since 2023. The gas is supplied through a main trunk pipeline and a gas cascading system. This transition away from coal-based energy systems is reducing carbon emissions, lowering production costs, and enabling estates to invest in modern, climate-resilient practices . 'Assam's tea is one of India's proudest exports, and at Cairn, we see clean energy as a catalyst for strengthening this legacy,' said spokesperson, Cairn Oil & Gas. 'Our mission is to support the industry's evolution through affordable, reliable energy that fuels not just operations, but long-term sustainability.' Tea estate owners are already witnessing the benefits. With Cairn's natural gas supply , gardens are reporting up to 15–20 per cent savings in fuel costs, alongside a measurable decline in greenhouse emissions. The improved energy efficiency is also allowing producers to diversify into specialty teas, adopt drought-resistant plant varieties, and integrate water-saving irrigation systems - critical steps in the face of climate uncertainties. One such estate, Arin Tea Pvt. Ltd., has implemented drip irrigation across 30 per cent of its acreage, resulting in 15 per cent water savings without compromising yield. 'Cairn's support has enabled us to innovate while preserving Assam's tea legacy,' said Rakhi Saikia, Director of Arin Tea. 'We're responding to the climate crisis with practical changes - shade trees, efficient irrigation, and climate-adapted cultivation - and clean energy is central to this journey.' This forward-looking approach echoes the vision of Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, who, speaking at Advantage Assam 2.0, in February lauded the state's natural abundance and highlighted the transformative potential of aligning its traditional strengths - like tea - with sustainable, technology-driven growth.

Amul Dairy to set up Rs 100cr processing plant in Assam
Vadodara: The Kaira District Milk Producers Union Limited, popularly known as Amul Dairy, is set to establish a dairy processing plant in Assam with an investment ranging between Rs 75 crore and Rs 100 crore. The move is aimed at boosting dairy production in the region and expanding Amul's footprint in the eastern belt of the country. The Assam govt has allotted a 20-bigha parcel of land on lease to Amul Dairy at the Institute of Farm Management Campus in Rani, near Guwahati. The decision to lease the land was approved earlier this month by the state cabinet as part of a broader initiative to enhance the dairy sector under the Advantage Assam 2.0 programme. Amul Dairy chairman Vipul Patel confirmed the development, stating that the Assam plant is part of the cooperative's ongoing expansion across India. "Our new projects, including the Chittoor Dairy in Andhra Pradesh and the ice cream plant in Pune, are already operational. Paneer and sweets production has also begun at the Pune facility," he said. According to the agreement signed with the Assam govt, the new plant is expected to benefit around 20,000 dairy farmers in the state. Initially, the plant will have a milk processing capacity of one lakh litres per day, with plans for future expansion. "The plant in Assam will become operational within the next one and a half years," said Amul Dairy managing director Amit Vyas, told TOI. He added that the facility will play a significant role in strengthening Amul's operations in the northeastern region.
