Sharp increase of online attacks on continent
JOHANNESBURG - There's been a sharp rise in cyber-related crime in Africa.
Two-thirds of Interpol member states say cybercrime makes up medium to high levels of overall crime.
Interpol's latest Africa Cyberthreat Assessment report found West and East Africa are most vulnerable.
Illicit activities on the continent range from phishing scams to digital sextortion.
Security strategist and former Interpol ambassador, Andy Mashaile, says internet penetration is rising by the day making people vulnerable.
"There are more people now using the internet to by gadgets and not having the right knowledge regarding cyber crime and security.
"This then sees people clicking on links that will lead them to malicious sites which then steal their information," Mashaile says.
