On June 26, the singer, dancer, entrepreneur, and fashion slayer made history as the first African-American woman to grace the cover of Rolling Stone Africa . But while the images alone are striking, this moment is bigger than just beauty. As Rolling Stone Africa wrote on social media, 'This is more than just a cover, it's a cultural communion. A tribute. A bridge. A celebration of Afro-descendant brilliance.' And Ciara knows what this moment means. She said to the magazine: 'I feel so honored and proud to be having this moment. Africa is one of my favorite places on Earth! I'm obsessed with the people, culture, and dance in Africa, and I'm hoping to make the people of Africa proud.' This Rolling Stone Africa cover arrives at the perfect time for Ciara—a moment where style and substance are aligned. Her upcoming album, CiCi is a reflection of that energy. 'You can expect to have the best time of your life while jammin' out to the 'CiCi' album,' she teased. 'Be prepared to go on a music rollercoaster of good vibes!' And while fans have long referred to her as 'CiCi,' she's clear that it's more than just a stage persona—it's a symbol of connection. 'CiCi is my nickname. I don't call it an alter ego,' she said. Last chance to watch award winning crime comedy with 'best actor out there' for free
Fans have just days to watch it before it's taken down BBC viewers have a limited time left to stream a highly-rated crime comedy film for free. BlacKkKlansman is currently accessible on the BBC iPlayer at no extra charge. However, it's set to be taken off the platform on July 8 as announced by the broadcaster. This means that, as of now, movie enthusiasts have less than a fortnight to take advantage of this opportunity. The film narrates the story of Ron Stallworth, an African-American detective who sets out to infiltrate his town's local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist hate group. The storyline is based on real events and the autobiography of the actual Ron Stallworth, a black police officer who managed to infiltrate a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. In the film, Stallworth is played by John David Washington, known for his roles in Tenet and The Creator and also being the son of Denzel Washington. Adam Driver portrays a fellow detective assisting Stallworth with his mission, while Topher Grace plays the role of David Duke, who was the grand master wizard of the Ku Klux Klan during that period, reports Birmingham Live. Despite its historical roots, some scenes are dramatised for impact and deviate from absolute accuracy. Nonetheless, director Spike Lee received accolades from both fans and critics for his handling of such a topic. When it first premiered in 2018, one critic described it as: "Lee's most purely entertaining film since Inside Man in 2006, BlacKkKlansman has a timeliness that taps into an imperative national conversation." Another critic agreed, noting: "Blackkklansman helps Spike Lee finally land in the Best Director field where he deserved a place years ago." Although the film did secure an Oscar for Lee, the recognition came in the Best Adapted Screenplay category rather than for directing. Reflecting on the impact of the film, one viewer observed: "An all time great movie on American history and its future. A terrific plot and acting I can't say much more then this. It is a must watch for anyone that likes films about the evils in the world. Not so much as a eye widener as much as a of a jaw dropper. Just fantastic". The central performances were also lauded by another viewer, who praised: "John David Washington is possibly the best actor out right now. His father has an aura that steals any scene and role, but John's range is phenomenal. He has the ability to make you forget who he is in the character, but love the character. He and Adam driver work so well together. Great movie." Further acclaim for the film came from another individual who commented: "BlacKkKlansman masterfully blends biting satire with powerful social commentary, delivering a gripping and thought-provoking narrative that is both entertaining and deeply resonant."

DeFord Bailey started his career as a musician and writer in the 1920s and is considered the first African-American Country music star. Bailey was widely known for his harmonica playing and became one of the first artists to play on Nashville radio station WSM's Grand Ole Opry. It is said that his face was often concealed to hide his skin color/ethnicity during these times of segregation. And then there's Charlie Pride, who started off as a Negro League baseball player but switched careers becoming widely know as country music's first black superstar. Pride had an amazing career, outselling powerhouse stars like Elvis and John Denver. Pride won many awards during his career but in 2000 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. ✕ But we can't talk about African American pioneers in country music without talking about the first commercially successful black woman in the genre, Linda Martell. Martell started her career singing gospel and R&B but soon found her way to country music where her career took off. In 1970 she appeared on many country shows, including the popular Hee Haw, and the Grand Ole Opry radio broadcast, becoming the first black woman to perform on the show. From trailblazers like Charlie Pride and DeFord Bailey to modern icons like Mickey Guyton and Kane Brown, these 10 Black country artists have shattered barriers, redefined the genre, and left an indelible mark on music history. How Crystal Mullen-Johnson turned tragedy into triumph

Growing up as the daughter of a social worker and an entrepreneur, Crystal Mullen-Johnson knew starting her own company was in her future. Following a family tragedy when she was 14, the lack of mental health resources available to her motivated Mullen-Johnson to start her company, Strive Counseling Services. With locations in downtown Birmingham and Demopolis, Mullen-Johnson and her team of counselors provide adolescent, play, adult and couple therapy, as well as telehealth services. How did that hard childhood experience shape your professional career? My mom, unfortunately, passed away. We buried her the day before my 15th birthday. I love my mom; we spent so much time together and (losing her) really changed the trajectory of my life. What was missing during that critical stage of my development after my mom died was a therapist; no one guided me to get grief counseling. I knew I wanted to attend my mother's alma mater, Alabama A&M, so I pursued social work, pursued getting my master's degree and learned the model of establishing a business. That became my career track, and from there I pursued mental health. What are some recent trends in counseling you've noticed? There is a significant increase in African-American men seeking out treatment; it's a taboo conversation, mental health, and sometimes we are unlikely to seek treatment. Men are taught in boyhood to be tough and not cry but ... I have seen an increase where men are becoming more comfortable having conversations about how to overcome mental health challenges with someone that doesn't necessarily look like them. I (also) see a growing trend of therapists becoming independent practitioners as opposed to working within a group ... which I think provides more opportunities for people to select a business they want to work with. How do you take care of yourself outside of the office? Self-care is something I preach, teach and learn. My spirituality is my foundation for living, and I love journaling. I enjoy reading; I have a book club called Nurture and it's a group of professional women that gather together and we select a book once a quarter to read. I also love golfing, playing tennis and line dancing. What's a fun fact about you that not many people know? I was selected by American All-Star Dancers to perform at Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego with the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers.
