£500 funding boost for Age UK Bradford District's services in Idle

A charity has donated £500 to help support older people in Bradford. The McCarthy Stone Foundation has given the money to Age UK Bradford District to help fund the provision of the latter's Information and Information Plus services in Idle. These services provide a gateway to Age UK Bradford District's various functions, including help and support, advice and casework, and activities and groups for older people in the community. Mark Rounding, chief executive at Age UK Bradford District, said: "We are incredibly grateful to the McCarthy Stone Foundation for this generous donation. "Our services play a key role in connecting older people with the support they need, whether it's financial advice, social activities, or essential care. "With more older people facing financial strain, this contribution will help us continue to provide free, accessible, and much-needed guidance to those who need it most." The donation is one of several being made as part of McCarthy Stone's Happier, Healthier Project. McCarthy Stone has a new retirement living development, Jennings Grange, under construction on Bradford Road in Idle. Jennings Grange will offer a mix of one and two-bedroom retirement apartments, featuring private patios or Juliet balconies. More information is available at

Age UK Bradford District launches new Buddy Groups & seeks volunteers

Age UK Bradford District has launched four new groups as part of the Bradford Buddy Scheme. The scheme, funded by Bradford Council and part of the Gig Buddies franchise, aims to bring older people together, promote wellbeing, and reduce social isolation. The new groups are Cook & Eat in Great Horton, Shipley Book Club, Wrose Walkers, and Idle Arts & Crafts Group. The groups are open to people aged 50 and over, providing opportunities to stay active, make new friends, and engage in various activities. The Cook & Eat group, which began on February 25, meets monthly at St John's Church in Great Horton. This group is ideal for those looking to improve their cooking skills in a friendly setting. The Shipley Book Club, which started on March 4, meets at the Bothy Café in Shipley. It is a place for people to discuss their latest reads and connect with fellow book lovers. The Wrose Walkers group, which began on February 27, meets at the Age UK Bradford District Wrose & Windhill Hub. This gentle walking group encourages people to stay active while exploring local routes. The Idle Arts & Crafts Group will meet fortnightly at Idle Library, starting on March 13 (from 10am to 12pm). This group offers a fun, relaxing space to explore creativity - tea and biscuits are provided. To join a group or volunteer to support the groups, or as a 1:1 Buddy, please visit Elsewhere, Age UK Bradford District is also seeking enthusiastic individuals to join its fundraising team. Volunteers like Margaret Hughes have been making a significant impact. Ms Hughes has been volunteering with Age UK Bradford District for more than 15 years, initially working in the offices and now actively helping with fundraising. She regularly participates in supermarket collections and places donation tins in local businesses, helping to raise vital funds to support older people across Bradford, Shipley, Keighley, and beyond. She said: "I love getting out, meeting people, and raising awareness about what Age UK Bradford District does. "After losing my partner, I didn't want to sit at home. "Volunteering has kept me active, connected, and part of something meaningful." The charity is looking for volunteers to collect donations at events, find new places for collection tins, and encourage others to support their work. To find out more, please email info@ or visit
