Brazilian doctor who orally raped sedated women in labour gets 30 years' jail
The sentence comes nearly three years after Bezerra's arrest on July 10, 2022. PHOTO: UNSPLASH SAO JOAO DE MERITI , Brazil - An anaesthesiologist in Brazil who raped two women while they were in labour was sentenced to 30 years' jail on June 9 , according to Brazilian media. Giovanni Quintella Bezerra , 35, was also ordered by a court in Baixada Fluminense to pay compensation of 50,000 Brazilian reais (S$11,560) to each victim, reported Brazilian outlet Ag e ncia Br asil. An appeal by Bezerra's defence against his sentence was denied by the court. This comes nearly three years after Bezerra's arrest on July 10, 2022 for orally raping a sedated woman undergoing a caesarean section at the Heloneida Studart Women's Hospita l in Sao Joao de Meriti . Investigations found that the victim, who could not recall what happened during the procedure, had been given an excessive amount of anaesthetic, according to Brazilian daily O Globo . Bezerra was caught red-handed by his colleagues, who had grown suspicious of the amount of sedatives he had administered to other pregnant women earlier in the day. They hid a cellphone in a cabinet in the operating room and recorded Bezerra's crime on camera. Images of the rape were circulated months after the incident, sparking condemnation and expressions of disgust towards Bezerra's crime from netizens in Brazil and beyond. At least 30 other women who had given birth while assisted by Bezerra approached the police after the incident came to light, reported TV Band Rio . The Regional Council of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal Council of Medicine had in December 2023 revoked his professional registration as an anaesthesiologist without the possibility of an appeal. Brazilian singer who is pals with Neymar busted for alleged ties to gang he glorified in songs
A hugely popular Brazilian funk star whose songs glorify gang crime has been nabbed for the very same crimes he brags about in his songs. Marlon Brandon Coelho Couto Silva, better known as MC Poze do Rodo, was cuffed at his luxury home in the beachside neighborhood of Recreio dos Bandeirantes on Thursday morning, accused of cozying up to one of Rio De Janeiro's top crime groups, the Comando Velhelmo, according to Agencia Brasil. The 26-year-old influencer has 5.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify and nearly 16 million followers on Instagram, where he shows off his glamorous lifestyle rubbing shoulders with the likes of Brazilian soccer star Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior. His songs include several glorifying the Comando Velhelmo — whose members were seen toting guns while manning one of his recent shows, Folhape de Pernambuco reported. Advertisement In the song 'Na CDD Só Tem Bandido Faixa Preta,' Silva sang about it being time for Comando Vermelho to take back their turf from rival criminal groups. 'We have Glock, we have AK,' he raps. 'We're going to go back home and put the bullet to eat. Retake what's ours and shout: It's the CV!' Silva's concerts were allegedly used by the crime faction to 'increase profits from the sale of narcotics,' and used resources to 'acquire more drugs, firearms and other equipment necessary to commit crimes,' police told the outlet. Silva's shows were allegedly manned by armed members of Comando Vermelho in gang-controlled areas of Brazil. Instagram/pozevidalouca Advertisement He will be temporarily held in prison as the investigation continues, a custody center told the outlet. Comando Vermelho is one of Brazil's oldest criminal groups, founded in a Rio de Janeiro prison in the 1970s for inmates' self-protection, according to InSight Crime.

Brazilian steel companies' shares fall after government renews tariff system
SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Stocks of Brazilian steel companies fell on Wednesday after the government said it would renew for 12 months a system meant to protect the national steel industry, but that steelmakers have said is ineffective. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The steel industry began criticizing the quota system almost as soon as it was set up last year, saying it failed to control the flow of imports, mainly from China. Under the system, as long as the import quota is not reached, steel products can enter the country if they pay import tax of between 9% and 16%. If the cap is exceeded, a 25% tariff applies, Brazilian government news outlet Agencia Brasil said. MARKET REACTION On the first day of trading following the announcement, CSN was down 4.4%, Usiminas dropped 3.6% and Gerdau fell 1.2%. Brazil's benchmark stock index Bovespa fell only 0.5%. CONTEXT The system, which has been expanded to now include 23 steel products, was already criticized by the sector for being too broad. Tuesday's government announcement retained the exclusion - also criticized by the industry - from the quota and tariff system of imports from countries that have trade agreements or negotiated special conditions with Brazil. The steel sector has urged the government to renew the scheme with the inclusion of all steel products in the 25% tariff, as the European Union and the United States have done. BY THE NUMBERS Steel imports rose 27.5% year-on-year in the first four months of 2025, reaching 2.2 million metric tons, according to data from the country's steel mills association, Aco Brasil, which did not comment on the matter on Wednesday.
