Alberta launches new task force to tackle aggression in schools
Alberta is launching a new action team tasked with addressing aggression in classrooms.

The announcement comes after the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) released results of a survey conducted in December 2023 where educators reported more incidents of aggression from parents and students.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said in an interview with Postmedia the final list of committee members will come in the next few weeks. He said the ministry will be asking groups such as the ATA to recommend names, asking leadership at the province's largest school boards to participate, frontline teachers, education assistants and other representatives in the education system.

'We have heard loud and clear from teachers, EAs and other professionals that we need to take some additional steps to address complexity and aggression in the classroom,' Nicolaides said.

'We want to put this action team together so that we can get the best possible perspective from administrators, decision makers and folks on the ground to help us come up with some real, tangible next steps to help address some of these issues.'

Nicolaides said he's heard examples of physical aggression including fighting, kicking and throwing objects in classrooms.

The Aggression and Complexity in Schools Action Team will be comprised of 20 members of the education sector who will deliver a report along with short and long-term recommendations to the province by the fall.
