Harry Kane sinks Flamengo to set up Bayern Munich's Club World Cup tie with PSG

A World Cup is always a better place for the Brazilians. Yet the day after Botafogo fell to their compatriots Palmeiras, Flamengo departed too, cut down by Harry Kane. That sea of red and black will be missed off the pitch and on it too; they made this a match, scoring twice at the Hard Rock Stadium, where their fans did all they could to make up for the empty seats. But it was Bayern Munich who progressed, the England captain finally securing a victory when he scored his second with just over quarter of an hour left. Those two goals, along with a Leon Goretzka strike and an own goal from Erick Pulgar saw it finish 4-2, setting up a meeting with Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight. For Flamengo there was only a farewell and one that they might have felt did not do justice to how they had played. And yet they will also reflect on the part they played in their own downfall, the errors decisive in the end. Decisive from the start too, leaving them too much to do. The first of Bayern's four had come after just six minutes and two more followed before the break, aided by an apparent nervousness about their opponents when pressure was applied. Flamengo's goalkeeper Agustín Rossi had already been forced to backpedal to reach an inswinging corner, seen a poor clearance hit his own defender Erick Pulgar to set up a Joshua Kimmich shot, and gratefully watched a punch away hit a black balloon rather than setting up another dangerous delivery when the Brazilians were caught by another cross. This time it wasn't Rossi struggling to get a clean contact in the crowd, but Pulgar. Jumping by Goretzka, the hint of a hand in his back, he succeeded only in deflecting the ball off the top of his head and into the net. Bayern could not have wished for a better beginning but the Brazilians weren't going to back down, and Flamengo responded fast, Gonzalo Plata escaping up the right where they would repeatedly advance and delivering a cross from which Giorgian de Arrascaeta's header flew just past the post. Despite the errors, there was an aggressiveness and determination to Flamengo that went with the noise their supporters brought and said that this would be a proper game. It was, too, even if Bayern were soon two up when Kane took advantage of Dayot Upamecano's steal, turned and hit a 25-yard shot that flew in off the post, a deflection taking it away from Rossi. There had been an element of fortune in that and Flamengo certainly would have been entitled to feel unlucky to trail by two then and even more so a moment later when Manuel Neuer made an extraordinary save from Luiz Araújo, flashing out a strong right hand that had he and Kimmich celebrating. Next Léo Pereira, left footed, struck wide. And not long after that, Araújo superbly took down a ball somewhere up near his neck, spun and volleyed wide. When Gerson belted a shot first time, sending it screeching right through Neuer's hands to make it 2-1 on half an hour, they had deserved it. The problem for their manager, Filipe Luís, was that Bayern quickly matched it. Another poor clearance set it up, Flamengo complicit in conceding yet again. It came to Goretzka, lurking outside the area, although there was still plenty to do. He controlled on his chest, took one touch and then, despite the distance, opened up his body to disguise the direction of the shot and calmly yet firmly side-footed it into the corner. Frustration was shown when Pulgar swiped wildly at Kane; misfortune was shown when it was him, not his victim, who came off worse and had to be withdrawn just before the break. Flamengo kept coming, and were quickly back in it. An Araújo shot was deflected over, and from the corner the ball ran all the way through to the other side of the area. As it was put back in, Michael Olise blocked it with his arm to concede a penalty. A hop, a pause, and without a look Jorginho sent Neuer the wrong way, side-footing into the corner. Behind the goal, they erupted, roaring their team forward on to the front foot. Soon Bruno Henrique escaped behind the Bayern defence, but couldn't guide to shot on target. And then there was Kane again, another error ruthlessly exposed. Dribbling out from deep, Araújo just about escaped the first challenge but he couldn't escape the second. Konrad Laimer won the ball, Kimmich gave it to Kane just inside the area and that was only going to end one way, the finish so clean, job done his way.

Harry Kane scores twice as Bayern Munich beats Flamengo 4-2 to advance in Club World Cup

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Harry Kane scored twice and Bayern Munich capitalized on a quick start to beat Flamengo 4-2 in the Club World Cup round of 16 on Sunday. Germany's premier soccer club regrouped quickly from its only loss of the tournament last week against Benfica, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and then holding off Flamengo's comeback attempt to advance to the quarterfinals. Bayern Munich will face Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in Atlanta. Kane's first goal was a deflected strike nine minutes in that made it 2-0, and the prolific goal scorer found the back of the net again on a feed from teammate Joshua Kimmich that he whipped past goalie Agustín Rossi. The Bundesliga champion struck early when Flamengo star Erick Pulgar headed the ball into his own net off Joshua Kimmich's corner six minutes into the match. Flamengo answered when Gerson fired a strike past Manuel Neuer in the 32nd to cut the deficit to a goal before Leon Goretzka put made it 3-1 at the half. Flamengo pulled within a goal again in the second half when Jorginho scored on a penalty. Then came Kane again, finishing in the 73rd with his third goal of the tournament. The 65,000-seat Hard Rock Stadium — home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins — has been one of the more well-attended venues of the tournament and was almost completely full Sunday, with many attendees wearing Flamengo's iconic black and red kit. Key moment Jorginho sent Neuer the wrong way on a penalty in the 54th to cut the deficit to 3-2 and give Flamengo life. Takeaways Bayern's win ensured that at least four European clubs will advance to the quarterfinals. It also set up a rematch of the 2020 UEFA Champions League final, as they'll face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinal after the European Champion routed Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 4-0 earlier Sunday in Atlanta. ___ AP soccer:

Flamengo happy to progress after 1-1 draw with LA FC

Denis Bouanga put the MLS club ahead in the 84th minute but substitute Wallace Yan responded two minutes later to ensure Flamengo would progress unbeaten to their last-16 tie against Bayern Munich in Miami on Sunday. With top spot in Group D already assured, Flamengo coach Filipe Luis made seven changes to his starting side but there was no change to the style that already earned the Rio de Janeiro club wins over Chelsea and Esperance. With a little more accuracy in front of goal, they would have comfortably beaten an LA FC side who were already condemned to a group stage exit after losing their first two games without scoring a goal. "We had a great group stage," Felipe Luis told reporters. "We achieved our objective early so we've been able to bench players with yellow cards and give minutes to players that hadn't played yet. "We had rhythm and we had chances to score. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. We are very happy, no injuries and a great group stage, and now we're thinking about Bayern and nothing but Bayern." Bouanga had ploughed a lonely furrow as the lone striker all evening but pounced when his chance came from Tom Tillman's quickly taken free kick, slotting the ball between the legs of Agustin Rossi for his team's first goal of the tournament. The Flamengo fans were silenced but Jorginho, who had come on as a substitute only minutes before Bouanga's goal, found Yan with an incisive pass and the 20-year-old skipped into the box through four defenders and slid the ball past Hugo Lloris. The woodwork played more of a role than either goalkeeper in the first half with Flamengo's Danilo, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Pedro all hitting the frame of the goal along with LA FC's Marky Delgado. Flamengo continued to dominate possession with their calm passing game in the second half and it looked only a matter of time before the breakthrough came. Lloris, however, pulled off a world-class save to deny Everton, Pedro sent the ball over the bar with an acrobatic bicycle kick, and de Arrascaeta hit the woodwork for the second time with a rasping shot that came down off the bar. Luiz Araujo leads Flamengo to a 2-0 win over Esperance de Tunis at the Club World Cup

Luiz Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta each scored a goal, and Flamengo beat Esperance Sportive de Tunis 2–0 on Monday night in the Club World Cup. After dominating possession for 17 minutes, de Arrascaeta opened the scoring after finishing off a cross from Araujo. Araujo capped an amazing performance in the 70th minute by scoring Flamengo's second goal. This came from an assist by Jorginho, Flamengo's new signing and former Club World Cup champion. The Lincoln Financial Stadium brimmed with energy for the entire 90 minutes thanks to the 25,797 Flamengo and Esperance fans present. The attendance was far from the stadium's 67,594 maximum capacity. Key Moment: In the 66th minute, Esperance had a chance to tie the score with a counter-attack led by Youcef Belaili, but Agustin Rossi made a crucial save to keep Flamengo in the lead. This allowed Araujo to put the game out of Esperance's reach four minutes later. Takeaways: Flamengo could earn a first-place finish in Group D if they continue playing like they did in this one. Esperance's chances of making it past the group stage diminished a lot with the loss. However, with a win against LAFC and a tie between Chelsea and Flamengo, Esperance could still hope of making it into the elimination round of the Club World Cup.
