Protecting children ‘religious, moral duty of society'
The Muslim Council of Elders, under the chairmanship of Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar, affirmed that safeguarding children and preserving their childhood from exploitation and suffering is a religious, moral, and profound humanitarian obligation shared by societies, institutions, and individuals alike. On the World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12, the Council declared that addressing child exploitation and forced labour is a collective responsibility and demands unified efforts to develop sound policies, enact stringent laws, ensure social protection and quality education, foster a culture of societal responsibility towards children, and intensify initiatives to combat poverty and ignorance, which rank among the leading causes of child labour. The Council praised the programmes and initiatives by various nation states and institutions that empower families and promote education, thereby helping curb this grave issue and fostering a safe environment for every child's healthy development. The Council's statement also emphasised that in Islam, a child is a dignified being entitled to care, education, protection, and growth in a secure and nurturing environment. Furthermore, the Council underscored the critical role of religious, educational, and media institutions in raising awareness and educating communities to combat this issue, actively shaping a collective consciousness that prioritises child protection which is especially vital in today's world, where wars and conflicts intensify the suffering of countless innocent children. The Document on Human Fraternity, which was co-signed in 2019 in Abu Dhabi by the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, alongside the late Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church at the time, asserts that children's fundamental rights to family upbringing, nutrition, education, and care constitute a moral duty and responsibility for families and society. These rights must be upheld, defended, and guaranteed for every child worldwide, without exception. Ahmed bin Mohammed meets with Grand Imam of Al-Azhar
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Media Council, today met with His Eminence Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, on the sidelines of the Arab Media Summit. His Highness welcomed Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, wishing him continued health and well-being, and expressed deep appreciation for his efforts and Al-Azhar's vital role in promoting tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect. He praised Al-Azhar's efforts to convey the true essence of Islam, grounded in the values of goodness, coexistence, and harmony. The meeting also highlighted the vital role of media in promoting authentic Islamic and Arab values and in countering harmful narratives that target young people. Participants stressed the importance of equipping media professionals to confront such challenges, underscoring the media's influence in shaping societies and safeguarding cultural and ethical foundations. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar praised the UAE's prominent role in this regard, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on both Arab and international levels. He also commended the UAE's efforts in advancing the values of Islam, and its contributions to promoting peace and development through an approach rooted in human dignity, compassion, and the pursuit of collective well-being. His Eminence also expressed appreciation for the UAE's continued attention to issues facing the Islamic world, noting that its support reflects a longstanding commitment to solidarity with its brethren, foremost among them, the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people at all levels. The meeting was also attended by His Excellency Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the National Media Office, and Chairman of the UAE Media Council, and Her Excellency Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of the Dubai Media Council, President of the Dubai Press Club, and Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the Arab Media Summit. UAE: Keep the Palestinian cause burning, Grand Imam urges Arab media
The Grand Imam of Al Azhar Mosque called for journalists to focus on the Palestinian cause, citing the historical responsibility that Arab media bears. Ahmed Al Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, highlighted the role of Arab media and its responsibility for reporting on the oppression faced by Arabs. He said the media in the Arab world should "highlight the steadfastness of this people, and its obsession with the land, and to keep the cause of Palestine burning and burning in the hearts of the peoples of the world, in the East and the West." Al Tayeb spoke on the second day of the Arab Media Summit, a three-day gathering with around 8,000 Arab media professionals attending. "The issue that the Arab media should focus on is the issue of the people of Gaza and the wars and destruction it has caused, and the terrible violations it has caused, which have been denied by the peoples of the world, and which have continued for 19 consecutive months. "I would also like to remind the free world that those who see a humanitarian crime happening must stop it immediately," Al-Tayeb said. Al Azhar Mosque is a key and historic institution in Egypt that dates back to the Fatimid Caliphate in the 10th century. The current Grand Imam, Al Tayeb, has been serving his post since 2010 after he was appointed by the then Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Grand Imam attends Arab Media Summit in UAE
Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders Sheikh Ahmed Al Tayeb- press photo CAIRO – 24 May 2025: At the official invitation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, Prof. Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, is visiting the UAE to participate in the Arab Media Summit. The summit will be held in Dubai from May 26 to 28, 2025, said the Egyptian Sheikhdom of Al Azhar on Saturday. The Grand Imam is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech during the opening session, in which he will underscore the vital role of media in addressing contemporary global challenges, promoting dialogue, and supporting societal values.

Grand Imam of Al Azhar mourns Pope Francis, calls him 'distinguished symbol of humanity'
Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr Ahmed Al Tayeb extended his hearfelt condolences and sincere sympathy to members of the Catholic Church around the world after the death of Pope Francis on Monday. Calling him "a distinguished symbol of humanity", Dr Al Tayeb said that the pope "spared no effort in advancing the mission of compassion. During his papacy, the relationship between Al-Azhar and the Vatican witnessed significant development". The Grand Imam also acknowledged Pope Francis's dedication to strengthening ties with Al Azhar and the Islamic world through his visits to many Islamic and Arab countries and through "his fair and humane stances—particularly his condemnation of the aggression on Gaza and his firm stand against detestable Islamophobia". After the late pontiff greeted tens of thousands of Catholics after the Vatican's celebration of Easter Mass on Sunday, he called again for a ceasefire in Gaza. Francis, who was the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday. He was 88, and had suffered various ailments in his 12 year papacy.
