Israeli Airstrikes Pound Southern Lebanon: Over 20 Raids Shake Nabatieh
Ahmed Emam Israeli warplanes launched a series of intense airstrikes on southern Lebanon late Friday, in what has been described as one of the heaviest escalations in recent weeks. According to Al-Qahera News, the raids struck multiple locations, with the heaviest bombardment focused on the skies over Nabatieh, as well as targets both south and north of the Litani River. Sanjab reported that the assault involved no fewer than 20 airstrikes, suggesting a large-scale offensive. The strikes created a fierce belt of fire across parts of the Nabatieh district, triggering successive explosions that echoed across southern Lebanon and were heard as far away as the cities of Tyre and Sidon and surrounding regions. Sanjab added that new explosions were heard following the initial wave of attacks, indicating either continued bombardment or secondary strikes on additional targets, leaving the security situation in southern Lebanon highly tense and on alert. Egypt Eyes Chinese Market Opportunities as Guest of Honour at Guangzhou SME Expo
Ahmed Emam Egypt is looking to strengthen economic ties and carve out a greater presence in the Chinese market as it takes center stage as Guest of Honour at the International Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Expo in Guangzhou, running from June 27 to 30. Leading the Egyptian delegation, Basil Rahmy, CEO of Egypt's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA), and Essam El-Naggar, Commercial Minister Plenipotentiary and Chairman of the General Organization for Exhibitions and Fairs, held a series of high-level meetings with Chinese officials and business leaders on the sidelines of the expo. The talks focused on deepening cooperation between the two countries, with Egypt hoping to tap into China's renowned expertise in building a robust SME sector—a cornerstone of China's economic rise that has created millions of jobs and fueled industrial growth. 'We're exploring how Egypt can benefit from China's successful model, particularly in industrial and manufacturing projects,' Rahmy said, noting that Egypt's government is prioritizing the development of the SME sector as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and reduced reliance on imports. This focus aligns with directives from Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to harness the potential of Egypt's SMEs in boosting investment opportunities, localizing industries, securing supply chains, and raising product quality to global standards—efforts that could enhance Egypt's competitiveness both domestically and in export markets. El-Naggar underscored that Egypt's participation as Guest of Honour reflects the growing depth of economic relations between Cairo and Beijing. 'Trade ties between our countries are continuously evolving. Egypt is keen to attract more Chinese investment and identify new paths for Egyptian products to enter the Chinese market,' he said. He noted that Egypt's presence at the expo—which hosts hundreds of companies from around the world—provides valuable exposure and opportunities for Egyptian enterprises to build partnerships and expand their footprint. 'There's significant potential for Egyptian small businesses to supply goods and services to the Chinese market. This would not only give these businesses access to one of the world's largest economies but also help them innovate, develop new products, and scale up production,' he said. He praised the support provided by Egypt's Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade, which has worked closely with MSMEDA to enable Egyptian companies to participate in major international trade events. UN Warns of Repeated Attacks on Gaza's Health Facilities Amid Intensified Israeli Offensive
Ahmed Emam The United Nations has raised the alarm over repeated attacks targeting health facilities in Gaza, warning that Palestinians are facing widespread Israeli violations. The warning comes amid what has been described as an unprecedented Israeli military escalation in northern Gaza and the eastern areas of Khan Younis in the south, resulting in extensive destruction of residential neighborhoods. Israeli military operations in Gaza continue to escalate. The areas of Jabalia al-Balad in northern Gaza and the eastern parts of Khan Younis have become the epicenters of intense fighting in recent weeks, witnessing heavy bombardments and ongoing ground incursions. The Israeli army has reportedly deployed explosive-laden robots in Jabalia town, sending them into densely populated areas at short intervals as part of complex raid operations. Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes have carried out severe airstrikes on civilian homes, forcing residents to flee their houses and move westward toward Gaza City, after receiving repeated evacuation warnings through direct phone calls from Israeli forces. In Khan Younis, particularly in the Ma'an and Sheikh Nasser neighborhoods, massive explosions have been reported due to intense artillery shelling. The Israeli ground invasion is ongoing in the eastern towns of the province. Nearly all these areas have suffered systematic bombardment and destruction, with estimates indicating that more than 90% of eastern Khan Younis has been almost completely demolished. Areas such as Baten Al-Sameen are currently under further bombardment and bulldozing operations. Israeli Strikes Destroyed 216 Heritage Sites in Gaza in 'Erasure of Palestinian Narrative
Ahmed Emam Palestinian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Hani Al-Hayek, has accused Israel of carrying out systematic destruction of Gaza's cultural heritage during the recent military offensive, warning that the damage threatens to erase centuries of Palestinian history and identity. Speaking to Extra News, Al-Hayek said that 216 archaeological sites out of 316 documented locations in Gaza have been partially or completely destroyed in Israeli strikes. Among the devastated landmarks is the historic Pasha's Palace Museum, which Al-Hayek described as a significant cultural institution housing thousands of antiquities. 'The museum was directly targeted and completely destroyed,' he said. Al-Hayek added that the destruction extended to sites listed on the World Heritage Tentative List, such as the ancient Gaza Port and Wadi Gaza. 'This reflects a deliberate effort to erase the Palestinian narrative and obliterate our cultural identity,' he said. 'Churches and mosques have been targeted; virtually no heritage landmark was spared. This is a systematic assault threatening our historical existence.' Despite the ongoing conflict and severe conditions in Gaza, the ministry is preparing for the 'day after the war.' Al-Hayek said national teams are being formed to survey damage and salvage what remains of the territory's cultural heritage. He also noted that the ministry has been in contact with international organizations, chiefly UNESCO, urging them to fulfill their obligations to protect heritage sites. Among the sites requiring urgent protection is Tell Umm Amer, also known as the St. Hilarion Monastery. Al-Hayek further stated that attacks on cultural heritage are not limited to Gaza. He pointed to the situation in the West Bank, where the Ibrahimi Mosque (Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron has faced attempts to alter its features to suit Jewish religious practices. The ministry, he said, has demanded an immediate halt to these violations through direct appeals to UNESCO. Egypt Nears Sugar Self-Sufficiency with Major Boost in Domestic Production
Ahmed Emam Egypt is making significant strides toward achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production, thanks to government-led efforts to expand the cultivation of sugar crops and support associated industries. The Egyptian Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) published a series of infographics detailing the progress on its official social media platforms. The campaign highlights a broader national strategy aimed at maximizing agricultural output and optimizing the use of available resources to boost food security and stabilize domestic markets. According to the data, sugar beet cultivation has increased by 25%, with cultivated land expanding from 600,000 feddans in the 2023/2024 season to 750,000 feddans in 2024/2025. This is expected to yield 2.5 million tons of sugar, up from 1.5 million tons the previous year. For the first time in Egypt's history, sugar production is projected to reach 2.6 million tons in 2025, compared to 2.3 million tons in 2014. The outlook is even more optimistic for 2026, with forecasts predicting a rise to 2.9 million tons. The government's efforts have already shown results in reducing imports. Egypt's raw sugar imports dropped by 54.5% in the first quarter of 2025, falling to \$111.1 million from \$244.4 million during the same period in 2024. The data also revealed that Egypt achieved 81% self-sufficiency in sugar as of March 2025. Authorities anticipate that sugar imports will no longer be necessary by early 2026. Current government-held stocks of subsidized sugar are sufficient to meet national demand for 13 months. In terms of infrastructure, Egypt now boasts eight major sugar beet processing factories. Among them is Canal Sugar, the world's largest single-line beet sugar factory, which currently has a production capacity of 350,000 tons and plans to increase this to 750,000 tons by 2026. Other key facilities include the El Sharqiya plant in New Salhiya City with a capacity of 240,000 tons, and the upgraded Delta Sugar factory, whose capacity has risen from 14,000 to 21,000 tons of beet per day. The government is also investing in enhancing the productivity of sugarcane. This includes the establishment of seedling production stations like Wadi El-Saaida, which will supply 160 million seedlings per season, and the Kom Ombo station, with a capacity of 30 million seedlings per season. To further incentivize sugar crop cultivation, the government allocated EGP 16 billion for sugarcane purchases in 2025, and EGP 7 billion to cover industrial operations. Reference prices have been set at EGP 2,500 per ton for sugarcane and EGP 2,400 per ton for sugar beet at a sweetness level of 16%. Additional incentives include an early harvest bonus starting at EGP 200 per ton for beet farmers. Sugarcane farmers whose yield exceeds 30 tons per feddan will receive a bonus of EGP 50 per ton, while those exceeding 40 tons per feddan will receive EGP 100 per ton.
