Dhofar invests RO36mn in road development to spur urban growth
Salalah – Dhofar Municipality is pressing ahead with a package of infrastructure projects aimed at upgrading internal and dual carriageways across the governorate. More than 300km of roads are being constructed and paved, at a total cost exceeding RO36mn, in line with Oman Vision 2040 priorities of sustainable development. Covering several wilayats, the projects fall under the Sustainable Governorates and Cities Development Programme and are designed to ease mobility, improve safety, and support urban and economic expansion by enhancing the quality of road services for citizens, residents and visitors. According to officials, construction and paving works have been completed or are ongoing in Salalah, Taqah, Mirbat, Sadah, Shaleem and Hallaniyat Islands, Thumrait, Muqshin, Al Mazyouna, Rakhyut and Dalkhut. The projects follow technical and safety standards, with emphasis on long-term infrastructure sustainability. Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, said Salalah alone is seeing the development of 161km of internal roads, including in plains and mountainous areas, at a cost exceeding RO9mn. He confirmed the municipality is also working on dualisation of 9km of Sultan Qaboos Street, currently 22% complete, at a cost of RO16.3mn. In Thumrait, the municipality will pave 40km of internal roads and begin dualisation of a 4.5km stretch of Thumrait Street, which will include decorative lighting. The combined value of the two projects is estimated at over RO3mn. In Taqah, work has started on 32km of internal roads at a cost of approximately RO1.7mn, while Mirbat will see 20km of roads paved at a cost of RO995,000. Dualisation of 3.5km of Mirbat Street is also expected to be completed this year at a cost of RO1.96mn. The municipality is undertaking road construction across several other wilayats. These include 50km of roads in Sadah and 15km of roads in Muqshin. Ghassani said the infrastructure expansion reflects the government's commitment to development projects that directly improve citizens' lives and ensure balanced growth across the governorate. He added that Dhofar Municipality continues to follow a proactive approach, working closely with local communities to tailor services and ensure effectiveness of municipal development plans.

Events, avenues announced for Dhofar Khareef 2025
Salalah – Dhofar Municipality has announced details of the Dhofar Khareef 2025 season, which will begin on June 21 and continue until September 20, with new events and upgraded facilities aimed at attracting more visitors. Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, said the season will showcase Dhofar as an integrated tourist and cultural destination. Activities will be spread across five main locations: Ittin Square, Al Saada area, Awqad Park, Ittin Plain and Salalah Public Park. Each site will feature distinct events designed to reflect the region's natural and cultural diversity. The municipality confirmed that the venues have been prepared in cooperation with supporting institutions to ensure high standards and varied content. Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani at a press conference on Saturday Alongside the main sites, several other venues will host public and cultural activities, including the frankincense market, the 'Al Gharf' event at a Salalah farm, events at Raysut Beach, and artistic murals on Al Nahda Tower using modern visual displays. Additional events are planned in the wilayats of Taqah, Mirbat and Sadah, as well as at Al Hafa Beach Market and Samharam Village in Salalah. The season will also feature major sporting events such as the Salalah International Cycling Tour, the Dhofar International Drag Racing Championship, the Salalah Marathon and the Dhofar Khareef Traditional Weapons Competition. 'These aim to attract wider participation and position Dhofar as a destination for quality sports tourism.' Cultural activities include theatrical performances and seminars at Al Murooj Theatre in Salalah, with contributions from local and international writers and thinkers. Dhofar Municipality also plans to allocate dedicated space during the khareef season for small and medium enterprises, allowing entrepreneurs to present their products and promote local heritage as part of the visitor experience.

Salalah: The first International Conference for Academics and Professionals on Tourism and Hospitality began on Monday at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah. Organised by the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Dhofar Governor's Office, the three-day event – titled Tourism in the Sultanate of Oman: National and International Visions and Practices – brings together experts from 15 countries to discuss trends, challenges, and opportunities in the tourism sector. Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, inaugurated the conference and honoured keynote speakers, experts, and sponsors. The event includes specialised workshops, an exhibition featuring 25 public and private entities, and a student competition aimed at fostering collaboration between academia and the industry. Dr Ahmed bin Ali al Shahri, Assistant Vice Chancellor of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Salalah, highlighted the university's commitment to linking academic research with practical applications. 'Tourism is a pillar of Oman's economic diversification, and this conference plays a vital role in supporting national efforts to enhance the sector's contribution to the economy,' he said. Discussions will focus on key topics such as sustainable tourism, the role of technology in enhancing visitor experiences, and strategic investment opportunities. Experts are also addressing issues like governance in tourism destinations, AI-driven advancements in the industry, and education and training to meet future demands. Dr Ali bin Saeed Akaak, a key member of the organising committee, emphasised the importance of knowledge exchange in tourism marketing, business sustainability, and hospitality.
