Buffalo Diocese appealing ruling that it can't use Christ the King money for settlement

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Buffalo Diocese is appealing a ruling that it cannot use the money from the sale of Christ the King seminary to help pay off hundreds of child sexual abuse cases. A judge ruled earlier this month that the diocese cannot use nearly 65% of the $4 million from the February sale of the seminary, located in East Aurora. The diocese owes some $150 million to settle hundreds of child sex abuse victims dating back decades. Last week, the diocese asked parishes to contribute $80 million towards the fund. Contributions from parishes range from 10% to 80% based on a 'progressive percentage' of each parish's self-reported and unrestricted assets as of August 2024. Parishes in Buffalo to contribute millions of dollars to sexual abuse settlement Some parishes are asked to pay million of dollars. For example, Saint Timothy Parish in Tonawanda has been asked to pay nearly $5.2 million. Saint Joseph University Parish on Main Street in Buffalo has been asked to pay $1.1 million. The diocese is planning on officially filing the appeal next week. Aidan Joly joined the News 4 staff in 2022. He is a graduate of Canisius College. You can see more of his work here. Former UB student gets conditional discharge for inciting to riot at Jewish Student Union demonstration

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A former University at Buffalo student was given one year of conditional discharge for inciting a riot following a Jewish Student Union demonstration last year, the Erie County District Attorney's Office said Monday. The demonstration came after multiple days of pro-Palestine protests on UB's North Campus for several days in early May. The 19-year-old student, from Newburgh, N.Y., made a social media post on May 6, 2024, 'directing people to engage in tumultuous and violent conduct' towards the demonstrators. The student was 18 years old at the time. He pleaded guilty in February to one count of inciting to riot. Aidan Joly joined the News 4 staff in 2022. He is a graduate of Canisius College. 68 Rite Aid stores in WNY to close

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Sixty-eight Western New York Rite Aid stores will close next week and more than 700 people will be out of a job, state labor records show. Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in a year earlier this month and is in the process of closing distribution centers and selling off or closing store locations across the country. Stores in Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Genesee and Wyoming counties are affected by the closures. Rite Aid is attempting to work with other pharmacies and retailers to give them customer prescriptions, but there is no guarantee that they will be located at the same place. All stores will close for good on June 4. Aidan Joly joined the News 4 staff in 2022. He is a graduate of Canisius College. You can see more of his work here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
