Air Defence Fire Control Radar: The methods of conventional warfare have changed, as we witnessed during the Iran-Israel war and even in Operation Sindoor. Now, war is fought with advanced weapons and crucial intelligence. In view of these changes, India is also continuously upgrading its armed forces with the latest weapons. New indigenous weapons equipped with modern and advanced technology are being purchased. Recently, a major agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Defence and BEL. Under the agreement, which is worth Rs 2,000 crore, BEL will make Air Defence Fire Control Radar for the Indian Army.
These Made in India radars will further strengthen the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' program and decrease India's dependency on foreign weapons and air defence systems.
Major Contract Signed With BEL
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a Rs 2,000 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). Under the agreement, the Indian Army will procure air defence fire control radars from BEL.
Contract Was Signed In The Presence Of The Defence Secretary
The agreement is categorized under Procurement (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured). It was formalized and exchanged by high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Defence and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in New Delhi on July 25, 2025, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in attendance.
Indigenous Defence Industry Will Be Strengthened
These kinds of major deals will further empower indigenous defence industries by encouraging Indian MSMEs to manufacture components and supply of raw materials.
Important Step Towards Modernisation
'This will prove to be an important milestone in the modernisation of air defence regiments and will enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Army. It will also contribute to the economic development of the nation,' the Defence Ministry statement read.
Radars Will Detect Air Threats
These indigenous fire control radars are capable of detecting all types of aerial threats, including fighter jets, military choppers, and suicide drones.
13 New Agreements
Recently, Defence Ministry has approved 13 new contracts worth Rs 1,981.90 crores to strengthen the Indian Army's capacity for anti-terrorism operations. This emergency procurement aims to bolster the operational effectiveness of troops stationed in terrorism affected areas.
