SIA flight from Brisbane to Singapore 'experiences technical issue', diverted to Perth, Singapore News
Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ246 from Brisbane to Singapore was diverted to Perth on Tuesday morning (July 8) after the aircraft reportedly experienced a technical issue. The aircraft, an Airbus A350-900, departed Brisbane on Monday night (July 7) and was scheduled to land at Changi Airport at 5.45am on Tuesday morning. AsiaOne reviewed SQ246's flight profile on flight tracking website Flightradar24. The aircraft cruised normally at 38,000 ft after taking off. About three hours and 50 minutes into the flight, the plane began to descend and levelled off at 25,000ft as it passed north of the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. About 20 minutes later, the plane turned south towards Perth. It descended further to 20,000 ft and eventually landed safely at Perth at 4.58am (4.58am, Singapore time). Australian publication The West Australian reported that all 272 passengers and 15 crew members disembarked safely. The aircraft requires a spare part and additional repair time, the publication quoted a SIA spokesperson as saying. The Straits Times (ST) reported that SIA provided food and drinks to passengers while waiting for a replacement aircraft. "We are providing all necessary assistance to the affected passengers, including the rebooking of connecting flights and hotel accommodation in Singapore, if required," ST quoted the SIA spokesperson as saying. The flight was later renumbered SQ9224 and took off from Perth at around 4.40pm, and is scheduled to arrive in Singapore at around 9.40pm. AsiaOne has reached out to Singapore Airlines for comments. June turns quieter as animal spirits fade
Indian companies began 2025-26 on a subdued note, with investment appetite for new projects sinking to one of the lowest in nearly five years. While the June quarter is often a quieter period, new government capital expenditure (capex) announcements were the lowest this year in at least a decade. According to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy's (CMIE) project-tracking database, new projects worth ₹4.1 trillion were announced across the country during the first quarter of the current fiscal. This marks one of the lowest investment proposals since the first three quarters of 2020-21 (amid pandemic lockdowns) and the first quarter of 2024-25 (during general elections). Also Read: GVA data haze: Has India been overcounting the output of its informal sector? 'There is usually a seasonal dip observed in project announcements in the June quarter after the ramp-up in March. But this year the decline was unusually sharp," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at Icra Ltd. A sharp decline in government projects, accounting for only 13% of overall new investments, primarily drove the slowdown in the recently concluded June quarter. Government investments totalled a mere ₹0.5 trillion, marking the lowest for a June quarter in at least a decade. This figure was even lower than public sector projects announced during April-June 2020, when the country had undergone an unprecedented lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Icra's Nayar, the notable decline in Q1FY26's new projects should be read carefully, as it follows the unusual spike in Q4FY25 of worth ₹6.8 trillion, which was more than double the year-ago levels and also exceeded the amounts seen in the rest of 2024-25 together. Also Read: Public capex is doing the heavy lifting, and the figures aim at a decade's high 'The chunking up of such announcements in Q4FY25 is likely to have led to the lull in Q1FY26," she added. Private sector investments, at ₹3.5 trillion, though accounting for the bulk of new project announcements in Q1FY26, still hit a four-quarter low. Among the 10 largest new project announcements in the June quarter—which collectively represented approximately 67% of total investments—only one was government-funded: the Chandrapura Ultra Supercritical Power Plant Expansion Project worth ₹0.2 trillion in Giridih, Jharkhand. Vedanta's Dhenkalan Aluminium Smelter Project led new investments in Q1FY26 at ₹1.3 trillion, followed by InterGlobe's purchase of 30 more Airbus A350-900 aircraft valued at ₹0.4 trillion. Sector-wise analysis reveals that manufacturing primarily dominated new investments in the quarter, accounting for more than half of all announcements, yet investments in this segment remained at a near two-year low. Also Read: Sixteenth Finance Commission likely to keep states' tax share unchanged amid Centre's defence, capex needs Despite the subdued pace of new investment announcements in Q1FY26, project completions showed relative strength, with projects worth ₹2 trillion completed during the quarter, marginally lower than projects worth ₹2.4 trillion completed in the previous quarter.

This is the most ridiculously easy international flight you can take
The airline: Fiji Airways The route Nadi to Sydney flight FJ 911 Frequency Twice daily Aircraft Airbus A350-900 Class Economy, Seat 43D, aisle Flight time 4 hours, 17 minutes (despite a delayed departure, we arrive ahead of the scheduled 4 hours 45 minutes) Checking in Fiji Airways is part of a consortium that owns multiple hotels on Denarau, including the Sofitel, Sheraton and Hilton. The hotels have a unique 'resort check-in' program, meaning I only have to arrive at the airport 60 minutes before my 9am flight. The downside? The check-in desk at the Sofitel closes at 4.45am so I have to get there early. The upside? I use the extra time at the resort to watch the sunrise, swim, order breakfast by the ocean, and drink fresh sugarcane juice. While other members of my group take an early shuttle, nervous about potentially missing their flight, I leave Denarau at 7.40am, making it in plenty of time to breeze through security and immigration, pick up duty-free booze, and read a chapter of my book before boarding. I love it. Baggage The airline's Value Fare option allows one piece of cabin luggage up to 7kg, and one checked bag up to 30kg. Loyalty scheme

Landing gear snag delays Kol-Doha flight by 5 hrs
Kolkata: A suspected snag in the landing gear, probably due to hydraulics or electrical issue, delayed the departure of a Qatar Airways flight from Kolkata airport on Monday. The aircraft in use was a Boeing B 787-8 twinjet. The airline alternates between this aircraft and an Airbus A 350-900 twinjet on this sector. Flight QR 540 reached Kolkata at 2.14 am, around 6 minutes before the scheduled arrival. However, the return flight QR 541 departed nearly 5 hours behind schedule. Sources said the pilots may have either experienced a problem with the deployment of the landing gear prior to touchdown or received an alert on the cockpit instrument panel about an issue with the landing gear. After passengers alighted from the aircraft, the boarding of Doha-bound passengers was kept on hold while engineers looked into the landing gear, including the hydraulics, to sort out the issue. IC Markets Start Now Undo I was scheduled to participate in a golf tournament this afternoon. This delay puts all my plans at risk," wrote Anirudh Bagri, a city-based businessman and golfer associated with a premium golf club in south Kolkata. Reminding the airline that he was a frequent flier, he urged the airline to be more compassionate towards fliers' purpose of travel as he further added: "To make things worse, I paid Rs 24,606 for extra baggage just to carry my golf set for this tournament. Now I'm stranded at Kolkata Airport, unsure if I'll even make it. I chose this flight specifically so I could rest before my match." An airport official said the issue was resolved around 8.15 am, after which boarding commenced. The flight finally departed at 9.40 am instead of 3.50 am. Six days ago, only 11 passengers took the Qatar Airways flight to Doha after it was delayed by nearly 10 hours following the airspace closure in Qatar after Iranian missiles attacked a US airbase near the capital. A week prior to that, another Qatar flight was similarly delayed by 5 hours due to geopolitical turbulence in West Asia.
