12 sentenced to life, 5 get 3-yr in jail in 2007 gang war case

Lucknow: A special SC/ST court in Barabanki on Monday sentenced 12 people to life imprisonment for their involvement in a caste-based gang war in Saraitha village under Barabanki (now part of Ayodhya) following the 2007 panchayat elections. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court of ADJ Veena Narayan also sent 5 others to 3 years' imprisonment. They were also imposed a penalty of Rs 68,000 each. The 12 individuals included Ajay Singh, Jagannath Singh, Vinod Singh, Krishna Magan Singh, Sahjram Singh, Karuna Shankar Singh, Sanjay Mishra, Sahab Baksh Singh, Munna Singh, Mukut Singh, Pramod Kumar Singh and Rakesh Kumar Tiwari. They were sentenced under section 148 IPC (rioting armed with deadly weapons), section 307 read with 149 IPC (attempt to murder by an unlawful assembly), section 436 read with 149 IPC (mischief by fire committed by a group), section 504 IPC (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), section 506 IPC (criminal intimidation), and section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST Act (committing a serious offence against a member of a scheduled caste/scheduled tribe on the basis of caste). Those who got three years imprisonment were Ramsingh, Mansharam, Amresh Kumar Yadav, Nankau and Sarvajeet. Complainant Krishna Magan Singh—who won 2007 village head elections—said the violence stemmed from political and caste-based rivalry. Krishna alleged that the losing candidate Ajay Singh and his associates held a grudge after Krishna initiated proceedings to cancel the licence of a local ration dealer. On March 4, 2007, the complainant and his relative Mansaram were at a tea stall when a verbal altercation broke out with Ajay Singh and Sahjram. A few hours later, over a dozen armed men stormed Krishna's home hurling caste-based slurs and issuing death threats. They assaulted Krishna's family members—Chet Ram, Sundarlal, Durbari, Ramsingh, Lalaram, Milan and Nanku and set afire a house belonging to Ramsingh. Chet Ram later succumbed to his injuries. Both sides filed FIRs against each other. During the long trial, four accused died. Three accused — Umeshwar Pratap Singh, Bhairav Baks Singh and Shankar Baks Singh — were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

AI in Corporate Travel: BCD Focuses on the Plumbing, Not the Flash

AI might be the future of corporate travel, but for now, it's clearly in pilot mode where the real work is taking place out of view. Much of the artificial intelligence work in corporate travel isn't happening in slick user interfaces — it's buried in the data infrastructure. At BCD Travel, the world's second-largest travel management company, AI development is focused on cleaning up messy, fragmented data before it can be turned into anything actionable. The foundational work in AI at the Netherlands-headquartered company centers on improving data importation, quality, and reconciliation with the aim of delivering better insights to clients. 'There are four key areas we look at when it comes to using AI for data analytics,' said Ajay Singh, BCD's Vice President of Payment and Data Science. 'Data ingestion, improving data quality, enriching data through reconciliation, and finally, delivering insights back to clients.' . This supports the backbone of how corporate travel managers make decisions about spend, compliance, traveler behavior, and supplier negotiations. Each step also reflects a real pain point in the travel data landscape, one that Singh describes as 'highly fragmented' because of information flowing from global distribution systems, travel management companies, online booking tools, card providers, and suppliers. One clear use case is AI-assisted matching of credit card transaction data with booking records, a task that once required tedious manual review. Another is parsing unstructured data, like comments, PDFs, and voice notes, to pull out meaningful travel insights. 'AI can help us move from reactive reports to proactive recommendations,' he said. 'It's about making the data work for each client, in a way that's relevant to their specific needs.' Personalization Is Key As for where AI will have the greatest impact in the next few years, Singh argued it won't be in automation, but in personalization. In other words, enabling clients to query the data, generate their dashboards, and set predictive alerts based on what matters to them. 'Every client is different. Even within a company, different markets and stakeholders care about different outcomes,' Singh said. 'The goal is to democratize data, to let every user, not just analysts, become a data user.' Despite the potential of AI, Singh is candid about where the industry stands: 'If this is a seven-inning game, we're still in the first inning.' One reason? The data isn't ready yet.'AI is like oil; it needs refining. If your data isn't clean, AI can't do much with it,' Singh said. Amex GBT Helps Agents Other corporate travel businesses are likewise using AI behind the scenes, and are also experimenting with more visible forms. As detailed at Skift's recent Data + AI Summit, Amex GBT, the world's largest travel management company, has deployed an AI assistant to help travel agents swiftly surface policy rules tailored to each client. That's a clear efficiency gain, especially when agents juggle multiple accounts, Marilyn Markham, vice president, AI strategy and automation at Amex GBT, said at the summit. The company also uses a chatbot to handle frequently asked questions, though it admits that it is only accurate about 60% of the time, and falls back to human agents when things get complicated. Amadeus Tests Natural Language Questions Amadeus, meanwhile, is betting on 'agentic AI,' a system of small, task-oriented agents that work together to fulfill goals like booking flights or pulling data, Rodrigo Acuna Agost, head of research and the AI Center of Excellence at Amadeus, said at the conference. The company has rolled out a voice-to-voice assistant in limited internal use and is testing tools that let users ask natural language questions like 'What are my top 10 customers?' without needing database knowledge. But even Acuna Agost admitted that a large-scale rollout is years away. Right now, the AI assistants can answer basic questions, said Acuña Agost. But full end-to-end automation? That's still aspirational.

Athletes, public oppose hasty inauguration of Jevargi taluk stadium; force MLA to leave

Kalaburagi: Athletes and the public strongly protested against the hasty inauguration of Jevargi taluk stadium by KKRDB chairman and Jevargi MLA Ajay Singh. During his visit to attend the World Yoga Day event on Saturday, the athletes confronted him about the incomplete facilities at the stadium. The protesters pointed out that essential infrastructure was missing, and the indoor stadium construction remained unfinished. They emphasised that inaugurating an incomplete facility would compromise its functionality and purpose. The situation became tense when athletes and local residents jointly raised their voices against the premature opening. The demonstrators highlighted that proper sports facilities, including training areas, changing rooms, and basic amenities, were yet to be installed. The lack of adequate infrastructure would hinder athletes' training and preparation for competitions. The indoor stadium, which was meant to provide year-round training facilities, still required significant work to be operational. Local sports enthusiasts expressed concern that rushing the inauguration would affect the quality of sports development in the region. They demanded that the stadium should be opened only after all facilities were properly completed and tested. The protest culminated in a heated exchange between the athletes and Ajay Singh, with the public joining in to voice their disapproval. Opposition and arguments forced Ajay Singh to leave the stadium without inaugurating it, said a source.

India's future boxing stars to face off at 6th Junior (U-17) Nationals

Rohtak (Haryana)[India], June 19 (ANI): Around 640 up-and-coming pugilists from across the country, including 350 boys and 290 girls, will face off in the 6th Junior (U-17) Boys and Girls National Boxing Championships at the National Boxing Academy in Rohtak, Haryana, from Thursday. Both the Junior Boys and Junior Girls competitions will feature 13 weight categories each, ranging from 44-46 kg to 80+ kg. The Services Sports Control Board will look to defend their title from the 5th Boys' Nationals, while Haryana enter as the defending champions in the Girls' category. 'The Junior National Championship is a crucial platform for young boxers to showcase their skills in front of national selectors and coaches. It plays a key role in helping BFI identify and nurture future talent. I am happy to see strong participation from all teams as we look to discover the next generation of Indian boxing stars. Many of these young boxers will represent India in the 2032 & 2036 Olympic Games, and therefore, this championship is of great importance,' said Boxing Federation of India President-Chairperson, Interim Committee, Ajay Singh. 'This championship also comes before the Asian Youth Games in October this year, where, for the first time, Boxing has been included. The winners from here will go on to represent India at these Asian Games, where 14 medals will be up for grabs. With robust systems already in place, BFI is committed to supporting these young athletes in realising their full potential,' he added. The gold and silver medallists of the REC Combined Talent Hunt (Junior Boys and Girls) held in October 2024 would be eligible to participate in the National Championships under the REC banner, provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria of being born between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. The championships will be conducted as per the World Boxing Technical & Competitions Rules, wherein each bout will consist of three rounds of two minutes each, with a minute's rest in between. A ten-points-must scoring system shall be followed. Indian boxing has been making huge strides towards becoming a top boxing nation across all levels. While the seniors clinched eight medals, including two gold, at the recently-concluded Thailand International, the juniors (U-15 and U-17) collected 43 medals-including 15 gold, six silver, and 22 bronze-at the inaugural Asian U-15 & U-17 Championships, finishing second in the overall table and displaying the strength of a strong youth programme.
