Ajman University signs MoU with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport
As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen academic and research collaboration among higher education institutions across the Arab world, Ajman University (AU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT). The agreement aims to foster strategic cooperation between the two institutions and support the development of joint academic programs and initiatives in various fields of higher education. The MoU was signed by Dr. Karim Seghir, Chancellor of Ajman University, and Prof. Ismail Abdel Ghafar, President of AASTMT, in the presence of Dr. Mahmoud Mohamed Mounir El-Zalabany, Chairman of the Executive Council for the Medical Sector at AASTMT, Dr. Solomon Senok, Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Abeer AlGhananeem, Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Mr. Rami Abu-El-Haija, Director of Continuing Education and Enterprises, and Ms. Sherine Mostafa Elsayed Mohamed, CEO of the Top-Notch Center for Educational Services and University Admissions. The agreement outlines collaboration across several priority areas, including student and faculty exchange, joint research projects, academic visits, short-term study programs, cultural exchange, and the sharing of academic resources and scientific publications. It also encompasses cooperation in professional and technical training, with both institutions agreeing to jointly develop and offer dual-degree programs. Commenting on the signing, Dr. Karim Seghir emphasized that the partnership aligns with AU's mission as a non-profit institution to elevate the quality of education and research through meaningful collaboration with leading academic entities in the Arab region. In a powerful display of youth-led climate action, students from the Manipal Environmental and Climate Society (MECS) at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Dubai were named champions at the Green Entrepreneurship Program, hosted by Ajman University at the Ajman Youth Hub. Their winning initiative, LoopBite, is a community-driven circular economy platform designed to address the UAE's mounting food waste challenge, where over 3.2 million tonnes of food are wasted annually, costing the economy nearly $3.5 billion. The platform enables households, farms, and businesses to turn food scraps into compost via smart waste collection systems, while incentivising behaviour change through a gamified rewards app. The team was awarded AED 5,000 as a prize and is now entering the incubation phase, where investors will be involved. Ajman University will guide them through this process, providing ongoing mentorship and technical support, alongside guidance from key industry stakeholders, as they scale their impact. The team has already established partnerships with key government bodies supporting the initiative. The start-up is co-founded by students and recent graduates from MAHE Dubai, Ajman University, and Abu Dhabi University, showcasing the strength of inter-university collaboration and a shared commitment to sustainability. Ajman University researcher wins Thumbay grant
Dr. Ibrahim El Serafi, Associate Professor and Head of Basic Medical Sciences Department at the College of Medicine, Ajman University, has been awarded the Thumbay International Research Grant 2025 to fund his research project titled: 'The role of Vorinostat and CID1067700 in skin regeneration and wound healing'. The project focuses on testing the effects of these two drug compounds on stem cells to determine their ability to stimulate differentiation into keratinocytes, cells responsible for forming the skin. Through this research, the investigator aims to contribute to developing effective and innovative therapeutic solutions for chronic wounds. The project objectives include testing the effects of Vorinostat and CID1067700 on the in vitro differentiation of stem cells into keratinocyte-like cells, examining their potential genotoxic effects during the differentiation process, evaluating the most effective treatment using a skin wound model in Sprague Dawley rats, and analysing the toxicity and side effects of the treatment on the animal model. Chronic wounds — particularly those resulting from diabetes, burns, or venous insufficiency — pose major global healthcare challenges, often leading to serious complications such as infections, amputations, and reduced quality of life. This project aims to develop innovative therapeutic solutions by using epigenetic modifiers to enhance the differentiation of stem cells into keratinocytes, which may represent a breakthrough in wound healing treatments. The research also includes the development of patient-specific skin grafts and a topical treatment that could serve as a safe, effective, and accessible alternative for individuals with non-healing wounds, reducing reliance on traditional skin grafting techniques, which often involve donor sites and may lead to further complications. Advances in Personalised and Regenerative Medicine This project opens new horizons for advanced clinical applications, including developing autologous skin grafts that reduce the risk of immune rejection, and formulating a topical drug containing Vorinostat or CID1067700 as a non-surgical treatment for chronic wounds. If these treatments prove effective in clinical trials, they may be integrated into standard medical care protocols for patients suffering from wounds caused by diabetes, burns, venous insufficiency, or trauma-related skin injuries. The project also represents a pioneering step in regenerative medicine through the use of epigenetic modifiers in skin regeneration.
