Over RM260 Mln For Seven Energy Projects To Benefit 60,000 In Sabah, Labuan
KOTA KINABALU, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has allocated over RM260 million for seven energy projects across Sabah and Labuan, aimed at improving electricity supply for 60,434 users, said Deputy Prime Minister and PETRA Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the projects, implemented by the Sabah Electricity Supply Special Project Team (PPKBES), involve substation upgrades, expanded grid connectivity and improved safety monitoring systems in Sipitang, Beaufort, Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Sandakan and Labuan. 'These initiatives have strengthened transmission and distribution infrastructure in Sabah and Labuan, ensuring a more reliable power supply, reflecting the federal government's commitment to energy resilience in line with the Malaysia MADANI agenda,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the handover of the projects at the Kota Kinabalu Main Intake Substation (PMU KKBU) today. Also present were PETRA Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and PETRA secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli. Fadillah said the PMU KKBU project includes a new gas-insulated switchgear and transformer facility to replace outdated systems, along with new cabling to enhance electricity supply to Kota Kinabalu International Airport. He also highlighted the completion of a seven-kilometre transmission line from the Menggalong PMU to the Sipitang-Lawas border, one of PPKBES' high-impact projects, which was completed on Sept 2 last year. The line will allow the import of 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Sarawak once Sarawak Energy completes its section in September. 'This grid is designed to carry up to 500 MW and is a key component of the ASEAN Power Grid, connecting Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and the Philippines for sustainable cross-border energy sharing,' he noted. -- BERNAMA

Kenyir's clean energy projects will boost investments in Terengganu, says Anwar
KUALA BERANG: The newly launched Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) and Green Hydrogen Hub projects in Terengganu have the potential to attract regional and international investors, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said the new alternative energy initiative, a clean and green collaboration between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), is aligned with both Malaysia's energy policy and international aspirations for green energy. "Kenyir is now becoming a focal point of interest for international investors. This is not just a boost for Terengganu, but Kenyir itself will become a major attraction. The project has also been implemented efficiently and swiftly,' he said at the launch ceremony of the ventures at the Sultan Mahmud Power Station in Kenyir on Saturday (July 12). Also present were Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir; Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar; TNB Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid and PETRONAS Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh. The HHFS and Green Hydrogen Hub aim to position Malaysia as a regional leader in the green hydrogen value chain, while supporting the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR). The Green Hydrogen Hub is a strategic collaboration between Petronas and TNB while the HHFS project is a joint venture between TNB's power generation subsidiary, TNB Genco Sdn Bhd and Terengganu Inc, a state-owned company. The pilot HHFS project at the Kenyir Dam has a capacity of 100 kilowatts (kW) and spans 1,085 square metres with 220 solar panels. This demonstrates that Tasik Kenyir, which covers an area of 36,900 hectares, holds vast potential for floating solar development, with up to 10 per cent of the lake's surface suitable for generating an estimated 2,200 MW without disrupting the lake's ecology. The Prime Minister also said the project is linked to the Asean Power Grid, a major regional initiative that will begin with an undersea cable project connecting Vietnam to Kota Bharu, Kelantan, before extending to Peninsular Malaysia's grid and eventually to Singapore. "This means that from Vietnam, an undersea cable project will reach Kelantan, necessitating the construction of a new grid. The existing grid is considered insufficient in capacity. The new grid will start from Kelantan, then pass through Terengganu, and I believe it must be connected to the capabilities and infrastructure here in Kuala Berang and Kenyir, extending through Pahang, parts of Selangor, Johor and into Singapore," he said. As such, Anwar stressed that the HHFS and Green Hydrogen Hub projects are crucial, and all relevant parties must work together to expedite their implementation. In addition, the Prime Minister called on PETRONAS and TNB to explore ways to provide Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), including upskilling programmes, specifically for local youths in Kuala Berang, Hulu Terengganu. He said the relevant ministries, such as the Education Ministry, the Higher Education Ministry, and the Human Resources Ministry, along with the Terengganu government, PETRONAS and TNB, should initiate specialised training programmes for local youths. "I want to ensure that youths from Kuala Berang are given training opportunities, so that the people here won't say that while a major project is located here, their children are only able to open small restaurants or work as cleaners. "It would be better to plan the training properly so there is a dedicated facility for the youths of Kuala Berang and Terengganu to undergo specialised training. I hope this can be expedited," he said. - Bernama

Malaysia to consider adopting nuclear energy to accelerate net-zero target 2050
Deputy Minister of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has to relook the whole energy triangle, including the possibility of adopting nuclear energy, in order to achieve its net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, said Deputy Minister of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. "We need to maintain the affordability, the sustainability as well as the security of the supply. Where are we going to replace our base load? ".… so even nuclear is not considered as renewable energy, but it is considered as one of the clean sources of producing energy. So if you ask me, from my point of view, I think without nuclear, we may not achieve net zero (target) by 2050," he said. Akmal Nasrullah was a panelist in a dialogue session entitled 'Delivering Malaysia's Energy Transition' at the Energy Asia 2025 conference here today. He stressed that when the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) was launched in 2023, the interest was not only on the production or energy transition but the dynamics in terms of consumption have also changed. To recap, NETR aims to achieve 70 per cent renewable energy in the energy mix by 2050, where solar and hydro energies play the main role, while natural gases serve as the transition fuels. He said the government and public should embrace reality to adopt nuclear energy to help the country achieve its net zero mission. "So bear in mind, this (adopting nuclear energy) is something we have to really consider. "We do (have) our own planning, but hopefully when the government decides to go full-fledged for nuclear, not just the government, (but) the public will also be ready to face the reality that for us to achieve the net zero target by 2050, nuclear (energy) is the way to go," he said. - Bernama

Policy on groundwater management urgently needed
KUALA LUMPUR: A policy on groundwater management as an alternative water source must be formulated and implemented immediately to ensure the continuity of the country's water supply, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. He said this is necessary because water resources, which are essential for life and national development, are increasingly under threat due to pollution, climate change and rising demand. 'In this context, groundwater is a vital alternative — it is cleaner, less exposed to pollution and has huge potential, especially in rural areas,' he said when opening the Seminar on the Potential of Groundwater: An Alternative for Water Resource Management in Malaysia here today. He said the seminar brought together policymakers, implementers and stakeholders to chart a clear direction for comprehensive water management, particularly groundwater, with Parliament acting as a bridge between the legislative and executive branches. Also present was Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. 'Malaysia isn't that big — we only have 32 million people. Surely we can solve our water issues; it's not like we're in Ethiopia or Africa. We're surrounded by sea; we're a maritime country with abundant rainfall. The issue lies in how we manage it for the benefit of the people,' he stressed. Meanwhile, Akmal Nasrullah described the seminar as a catalyst for a new policy grounded in data and concrete action. 'Malaysia still depends on surface water sources like rivers and dams to meet domestic, industrial and agricultural needs. However, climate uncertainty, pollution and rising demand are increasingly threatening the country's water security. 'In this context, groundwater has the potential to serve as a strategic complement to the existing system,' he said. He added that a study by the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia found that the country has vast groundwater reserves, particularly in rural and interior areas that are often left out of conventional supply systems. However, he said the development of this resource remains limited, with key constraints including a lack of hydrogeological data, limitations in mapping and monitoring technology, and low public awareness.
