Al-Azhar Al-Sharif expresses solidarity with Qatar, says ‘weapons cannot stop wars'

CAIRO – 24 June 2025: Al-Azhar Al-Sharif expressed on Tuesday its solidarity with the sisterly State of Qatar and called for respect for the independence and sovereignty of states over all their territories. Al-Azhar affirmed that 'clash of weapons' cannot stop wars, and that 'dialogue' leading to a just and lasting peace is the only way to end all wars. Therefore, Al-Azhar stressed its full support for efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace, a rapid cessation of hostilities, and the empowerment of the peoples of developing countries to enjoy a dignified life for themselves, and their children, just as all other peoples who have decided to end any conflict that leads to the shedding of their children's blood enjoy. On Monday, Iranian Armed Forces announced that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with a devastating and powerful missile attack as part of Operation 'Basharat al-Fatah' [the Herald of the Victory], in retaliation to the US attacks on three Iranian uranium enrichment facilities on Sunday. In a statement, the Iranian IRGC said that its forces bombed the US Al Udeid base in Qatar, the largest strategic asset of the US military in the West Asia region. According to The New York Times, Iran informed Qatar in advance of the attacks in order to minimize casualties However, the Qatari Ministry of Defense announced that Qatari air defenses successfully intercepted a missile attack targeting Al-Udeid Air Base, noting that the incident did not result in any deaths or injuries. Spokesman of Qatari Foreign Ministry Majed Al Ansary stated that Qatar strongly condemned the attack as considered it a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Qatar, its airspace, international law, and the United Nations Charter.

Al-Azhar grand imam condemns Israel's aggression against Iran in Persian statement - Foreign Affairs

Ahmed El-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the world's largest Sunni Islamic institution, has issued a forceful condemnation of Israel's ongoing actions against Iran, delivering his message not only in Arabic and English but, for the first time, in Persian on social media. 'I strongly condemn the ongoing aggression by the occupying entity against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the systematic attacks and continued recklessness committed by this usurping aggressor and its backers,' he wrote on his social media accounts. El-Tayyeb warned that such actions risk "dragging the region to the brink of explosion and igniting a full-scale war, from which only arms dealers and profiteers of bloodshed would benefit." He also slammed the international community's response, saying its "silence in the face of this tyranny, and its failure to put an end to it, amounts to complicity in the crime." He added that such inaction "yields nothing but a growing threat to global security." "War cannot create peace," he concluded. His remarks come as the aerial confrontation between Israel and Iran enters its eighth consecutive day, with destruction and casualties mounting on both sides. Meanwhile, investigative reports—such as Seymour Hersh's recent piece detailing an alleged US-backed 'all-out bombing campaign' against Iran, including plans to strike the heavily fortified Fordow nuclear facility—suggest a broader escalation. Azhar strongly condemns Israeli aggression on Iran

Israel launched airstrikes on Iran - Agencies CAIRO - 14 June 2025: Al-Azhar Al-Sharif condemned, in the strongest terms, the Zionist aggression targeting the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran. "This aggression constitutes a flagrant violation of state sovereignty and a flagrant infringement of international law, as well as a direct threat to regional and international peace and security," read a statement issued by the Azhar. Al-Azhar warned that the barbarity of the Zionist occupation threatens to further escalate crises in the region and threatens to plunge it into regional chaos, undermining its stability and endangering the lives of its people. Al-Azhar emphasized that the arrogant policy pursued by this entity reflects its aggressive behavior and its approach to spreading chaos, undermining international peace and security, and its efforts to transform the entire region into an arena for wars and conflicts. Al-Azhar reiterated its call to the international community, all UN institutions, and all conscientious individuals worldwide to shoulder their moral and humanitarian responsibilities by halting the repeated violations perpetrated by this rogue occupation in the region, ensuring respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, and working diligently to avoid escalation in order to preserve the lives of innocent people.
